The back plate on the one I had was to snug were the float wire goes through the two half round detentes. I had to deepen/widen them a bit to make the float wire pivot freely. I would check these before adjusting the resistance wire wiper.

In that case, you can just bend the elbow towards the center of the unit and it will usually lift the plate some.
