Thanks for sharing. The colorful costumes were made the show even better than the black and white films make out. They were a great comedy trio without a doubt.

THANK YOU! I just bought the book on Kindle, and have been so enjoying it. BUT TO SEE IN COLOR! It makes their work even more "hilarious". The red shoes, the colors, it's all even funnier in color.

Many thanks Kitty, it was one of several delightful discoveries I made while researching the book. Since writing it I've also found a couple of photos of the original Betty, which can be found on the Betty Knox Wikipedia page.

❤️❤️❤️ ... Wilson, Keppel and Betty formed a popular British music hall and vaudeville act in the middle decades of the 20th century. They capitalised on the fashion for Ancient Egyptian imagery following the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. The "sand dance" that formed the highlight of their act was a parody of postures from Egyptian tomb paintings, combined with references to Arabic costume. The lithe and extremely lanky Wilson and Keppel, who wore long moustaches and make-up to emphasise the sharp angularity of their features and make them appear almost identical, demonstrated their impressive suppleness in adopting wild gestures and dancing in identical "stereo" movements, while Betty joined their antics. The act included a soft-shoe routine performed on a layer of sand spread on the stage to create a rhythmic scratching with their shuffling feet and was usually performed to the familiar Egyptian Ballet (1875), by Alexandre Luigini. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilson,_Keppel_and_Betty

In Canada, there was a very long-running children's TV show called "The Uncle Bobby Show", hosted by Bobby Ash, an ex-circus clown from England. In the Birthday Corner segments, a trio of knitted clown puppets, named Wilson, Keppel, and Betty, descended from above, to sing "Happy Birthday".

J.B. Priestley wrote about that era in Lost Empires. A nostalgic look through a TV miniseries of the Music Halls before 1914, an escape into the past. A somewhat comforting, yet, a regressive return to a kind of music hall arcadia.

It's so weird how simple people's pleasures were. The things they derived their entertainment from. For me, it is completely unremarkable. But folk were stoked on it back then. I can get into stage shows. I like Rob Cantor's Shia LaBeouf. But there is no appeal for me in this.
