As I was editing the video, when I got to editing the part of listening to the old kitty purr, it was tempting to cut out the rest and just show that. If I had any idea it was so videogenic, I might have brought it out a long time ago.

@@WilsonForestLands I've been working on and running Diesel's back when they had pony motors to start them. That tractor purring is a lost sound. About the same as an electric Harley......to the, well you get the point.

Because the last couple years most of the things I’ve been doing in the woods is salvaging scattered relatively small trees. Not really practical for this size of machine. It would be extreme overkill for anything I’ve been doing. I mostly just brought it out this time to give it a little exercise since I haven’t been using it.

Humor drier than sand in the Atacama Desert. That is pretty dry, I like it. 😂

It’s a good in between size for a lot of things, but a bit big for what I’ve been doing a lot of here lately. That’s mostly why it hasn’t made a showing on the channel.

I think they find charcoal dating back thousands of years but I think it depends on the conditions. That’s why I say hundreds or thousands of years. I was part of a biochar study a few years ago. But I’ve heard so many things about biochar and charcoal, the one thing I do know is it’s black and it’s messy. 😁

I think the deer would just follow it up the hill and be fine with it there. They might even prefer it because there would be more shade. I didn’t even think about the snowboard run, that would make it much better up there. Minus this whole running into trees thing, I don’t think I would enjoy that as much as the viewers would.

Yes that can be a problem. It’s why I mixed them up with dirt and spread them around. If they were concentrated in a larger pocket together that can be a dangerous situation.

That’s what I have heard. But I’ve also heard some so-called biochar experts say this works well too. I’ve looked into it a lot over the years and what I have learned for sure is it is black and messy.

@@WilsonForestLands No doubt! The world is full of people whose confidence in what they say runs ahead of our confidence in what they say. The residue of a trash fire or clearing fire is almost never biochar, as I understand it. No pyrolysis, no biochar. Not sealed off from oxygen while it cooks, not pyrolysis. There are different grades of biochar, I'm sure you've heard, depending on wood used, cooking time and level of heat. I don't need to tell you biochar is porous and takes up compost tea during activation to make terra preta, so it hosts nitrogen-fixers and forms the equivalent of drainage tile when well-mixed (about 25%) with soil, to reduce need for irrigation and risk of flood while extending soil fertility. Plain wood ash changes soil pH, and might add some potash, which is good, too. While both can have benefits, they're not magic. My grandparents when there was wartime rationing used a pyrolysis cooker to get producer gas and biodiesel to run farm equipment, with some bonus black liquor for protecting fenceposts from rot. I suppose they could have been hippies. There are some sixty commercial uses for biochar, from activated filters to aggregate for high R-value concrete, but it'd take a big milling operation to really make it a going concern, as you only get 15%-35% dry weight as output. I'm just a guy who designs hand tools for market gardeners, so I can't really advise on an operation of your scale. People can use Google Scholar for the academic angle. North America's got some biochar businesses, but the only government-backed certificate yet is from the European Biochar Organization, which I know nothing about. Seems the comment section has plenty of people wishing you well in your biochar pursuits. Good luck with all that, on top of managing woodlands.

And so does the carbon monoxide, methane and hydrogen that actually burn and cause flame. But it’s not worth arguing with him about it. Even if he did add try twigs to to top of the fire to keep it going 😁👍🏼

I put twigs on top of the fire. It would be hard to put the dry twigs underneath the fire without lifting up the fire and putting the fire out.

Really? One would think it was easy. You put them on before lighting. Course then they wouldn’t be above the fire. Well I guess they would if you lit the bottom like you’re supposed to. 😁😉👍🏼

I had kindling on the bottom and the top and around the sides. The best of all worlds. All well spaced enough to get plenty of oxygen.

P.S. I didn't have that machine so I could put the fire out, I just waited until it was not a danger anymore, as it was sorrounded by wet grass and, anyway, if I had such a machine, the property is not big enough to maneouvre ir inside.

With material like that it might be hard to get a fire going no matter how you do it. But as long as you got it done.

Yeah it’s been sitting there a long time. Most of the small scattered trees I’ve been dealing with the last couple years are more appropriately sized for the smaller tractor. But it’s there if I need it.

I haven’t actually been doing enough in the woods lately to justify help. I have quite a few viewers asking me if I need help. I like keeping things simple and not having the complications that come with other people and liability.

Could I visit and provide free labour or help just for the experience?

I have people asking me that all the time. I am still not sure what to do about all the people who want to come help. I have some liability concerns to straighten out before I ever consider that.

It’s been here for years. I haven’t been bringing it out much since it would be extreme overkill for most of what I’ve been doing since the channel started. Salvaging small scattered trees, etc.

Some people consider charcoal to be biochar. I believe lye is made from ash, not charcoal. There was a lot more charcoal than ash. I was part of a Biochar study a few years ago. It determined that top lit fires retained a lot of charcoal without turning it into ash if you extinguish it soon enough. Because of the way they burn, the charcoal is shielded from oxygen much of the burn. No this is not an efficient way to make it. Yes a lot of it does get consumed. But a lot of it doesn’t. For someone who doesn’t want to go through a bunch of process, this is a way to make charcoal. It’s the way I make charcoal for grilling. Minus the dozer and the dirt part. They were not spread around the forest. They were spread around then buried in wet to muddy mineral soil. A safe distance from any forest material. Much less dangerous than everyone who is burning debris in the forest right now. The wet season is a safe time to do that when it’s too wet here for wildfires.

@@WilsonForestLands Charcoal and biochar are the same thing. One you throw in the dirt. The other you cook with. Look, that dozer makes the prospect of you making biochar into a very profitable business and you have to do minimal work. Just dig a huge cone shape hole , do the wood and lighting it just as you did before. The tee-pee ensures the wood falls in on itself , pushing burnt wood to the bottom and fresh wood on top. Lighting from the top robs the bottom of the cone of oxygen. All the air stays at the top to feed the fire. So the charcoal is actually formed at the bottom of cone since it drops to the bottom. Again, once its burning at a nice rate just cover everything with a mound of soil. You can leave the char there until you need it.

@@WilsonForestLands it’s a really nice machine. I’ve seen them worked hard and take tons of abuse. Try to keep running and hold it as long as you can. Almost non replaceable now.

I have a notice of operation with the department of forestry for doing forest work. With that I can burn here until fire season starts. Usually in May or the first of June.
