If the skimmer is lifted above water surface, the pump still gets enough water, so it doesn't run dry. With this "mod" I've left it over night for a few days and it works excellent.

The water ring, why does it have holes in the first place? I haven't covered mine, does it really make a difference?

I don't know, probably to let air easily out, but then the ring is too submerged. If you have the skimmer try the difference yourself. It is better "skimming" just the surface of the water. It is also easier to push your skimmer up and run dry with holes taped, so take caution.

My sk-30 accidentally floating up and get dry. I do not know the reason for this behavior. I get several stones and set it in basket of skimmer. Like working.

Yes, ocassionally this is a problem. You should make sure that you let all the air out of the pump compartment at the bottom. In my experiences when it works OK, it works for hours without a problem. It is not ideal, but for the price it is not bad... Stones are bad idea because you ruin the balance of the skimmer.

@@Mat3Si I noticed the same problem when putting stones in the skimmer ...it would knock the skimmer off balance so I put one heavy stone in the middle and it has been doing great at holding it down

If you spin it fast enough it blends 😆
