The increasingly popular winch assist system is vastly improving logger safety. The machine anchors into the ground above a slope and provides support to equipment below through a strong cable. This allows logging crews to work in the cab more, and on foot less, in steep conditions. Dave Dilley of Dilley and Soloman Logging Company in Forks, Washington, demonstrates how the system works during a harvest operation.

My neighbor was a hand faller for years, he was getting older 40 LOL, and knew it would not be a good fit for him as he got older and he did hurt his back at one time but recovered. He started his own carpentry business and is doing great. I have known a few that have died from tower logging steep slopes or seriously injured and this new method of logging steep slopes will let those loggers live longer and healthier.

Jim, exactly. It can be a very dangerous job. Loggers are very tough and take a lot of pride in what they do. We want to do all we can to protect them and enable them to have a long, prosperous career!

Nice work! Dilley & Soloman are great customers and Falcon makes a top not assist.

Very cool! But I’m baffled on the drone shots. How did the machine get the timber laying like toothpicks. Wish we could have watched for a longer period of time.

Thanks for watching! It's all in the skills of the feller buncher operator. He bunches the trees together with the machine, then lays them on the ground in an orderly manner. This makes for a much more organized process at this stage and also at the stage in which the logs are taken via cable to a landing area at the top of the harvest area for processing.

You betcha! We have employees in both the U.S. and New Zealand. Our New Zealand team came to the U.S. to show our Pacific Northwest team how winch-assisted logging works. And then of course Falcon has been a very supportive partner in showing loggers how this equipment can be used in the forest.

Sure is! It's a little like operating a video game controller that makes a heavy-duty job a whole lot safer.

Hi Trae. We plant 30 million trees every year and then spend decades caring for them. Our forests are a crop that takes 20-40 years to grow. Whenever we harvest one tree, we plant several in its place. You can watch our video of Rayonier foresters planting trees in Georgia and Washington here on our KZfaq channel at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdFylcmqy87IXas.html.

Dave, it does reduce the need for hand fallers, which makes worksites safer. We know that skilled hand fallers love what they do and they are very good at what they do. But they are becoming harder to find as the years go by, and it is one of the most dangerous jobs in logging.

Yes sir puts guys like me who love their job and strive to be safe and do a good job out of work. I understand it’s safer but if there was never bunchers in the first place, it wouldn’t be as hard as it is to find skilled fallers as it is now.
