Today we're looking at different ways of estimating wind during precision rifle long range shooting. Just talks about dialing versus holdovers for wind calls during competition or hunting scenarios. Leave a comment with your method...dial or holdover? Or is it purely situational?

I really enjoyed this video. As a long range precision shooter that's in nobody's hurry, I dial for everything......BUT, there are plenty of circumstances when there's a benefit to having some wind dialed in and just incorporating a quick hold and glad you demonstrated that. Good stuff on this channel as always.

Good video. I like to dial for base for some stages if they are same distance. Movers are always a dial for me.

yep, that's pretty much what I do too. it's situational.

When I have the luxury of time, I dial elevation and hold for wind. Put me on a tight enough time constraint, and I leave the turrets alone and use my reticle for everything. The catch is we play a different game at my home range. The the targets are not much smaller than a full sized IPSC and the the longest shot is never more than 600 yards. We have enough targets on a stage to require at least one mag change, and a lot of foot movement. When we have enough shooters we have been known to run a semi auto class.

That sounds like a lot of fun actually.

I always hold for wind starting from a dialed elevation and windage for a no wind condition. I hold for wind since it allows shot to shot exacting correction without any concern for annotation.

Good food for thought. To me, it makes sense to dial in a base wind at the start of a stage when engaging a single target like a mover, or targets at about the same distance and then making small hold adjustments if wind fluctuates or for corrections.

Decision tree: Constant wind, intermittent wind, wind that changes direction, and the WORST case: wind showing different directions at the same time on the way to target

Overall you gave solid advice and you shoot well. Generally i don't recommend dialing for big game shots as its too easy for excited hunters to dial the wrong way unless they practice often. Dialing for small targets and multiple targets is more precise than holding and dialing on moving targets is also wise so you can remove the wind variable. Thanks for sharing.
