Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

My experience with CVLife has been nothing but positive. Their slings are super impressive; the elastic is strong enough to hold a 12-pound rifle without stretching when at rest, yet stretch enough to allow you to properly shoulder it. Their scopes are functional with passable glass (though UTG is better). A friend of mine bagged a deer with a Mossberg Patriot in .30-06 sporting a CVLife 4-16x44 scope.

Thanks Ron for having the patience to do a review like this. Most of us regular guys can’t stomach, or justify, spending hundreds, or thousands, on expensive scopes. I know a guy that has many rifles in his gun collection but his scope collection is 10x more valuable than his guns.

I bought one of these under a different name, and put it on my 22. It’s fine, no issues. It’s clear, and easy to use. I am not bought and paid for. I just needed optics for my new 22, and this fills the bill just fine. Don’t know if I’d use it on a high power rifle though.

I bought a dozen and put them on 10-22’s for training rifles for my youth group. No problems. After 10 months the duplex X-hairs started to break, dangle and drop to the bottom. After the third, I called, they were familiar with the problem and replaced them all. It’s been almost 10 yrs and the kids will be enjoying them this summer.

Most of the cheap scopes don't hold up well on spring break air guns. The forward and back action knocks the guts out of the scope. Even higher end scopes won't handle that type of recoil. If you have an air rifle be sure your scope is rated for that duty, or it will disassemble itself in short order.

Based on my experience with these low cost Chinese scopes, I picked up a 4-12 scope for my 350 Legend. This was some some company called Edenberg. That scope works perfectly fine too. Appreciate your honesty and fair review. Most people are wrapped up in brand names and symbols. I work in the trades and have worked with machine builders who had snap-on tool boxes full of snap on tools, but when they had to do any real hard or dirty work they would grab the Harbour freight tools in the bottom drawers because they didn't want to wreck their "good" one's even though both have a full lifetime replacement warranty, but harbor freight was across the street.

Total agreement here... I'm in the (sadly and pitifully...) unarmed UK and have been looking for a cheap/affordable scope for my Weirauch HW77 (only 11.4 lb/ft because stupid gun laws, and 12 lb/ft or greater = 5years jail time...) and have destroyed (ie will not hold zero, sometimes can hear pieces jingling-around inside, etc) several "affordable" (under £80/$95) scopes in less than 50 pellets each, so I'd be interested to see if one of these can take the punishment of a springer or not? I modified a Magpul AR15 Backup Iron-Sight to create an aperture rear-sight that works with the standard Weirauch front-sight that I use for plinking, squirrels and other small vermin out to around 50 yards pretty effectively, but I turned 50 last year and my eyes would appreciate a bit of magnification (but only if it'll hold zero...), so I might see how much I can get one of these shipped to the UK for, and I'll report-back here how it holds-up IF it doesn't cost a stupid amount with the shipping...?

In 1970 my stepfather gifted me with a little 4 x 28 Montgomery Ward scope for my Mossberg 152. I had it on that rifle until a couple of years ago when I swapped it out for a little brighter scope due to my old eyes not being quite as sharp. All of that time I rarely ever had to adjust it. It didn't have claims of waterproof or shockproof and more than once it fogged up on me to the point that I couldn't see through it. That combination of Mossberg and Montgomery Ward brought home a lot of squirrel, rabbit and grouse dinners.

Ron, for many, many years I used the inexpensive Tasco scopes and was always extremely pleased with them. I very seldom spent more than $35 for one of them and I used them on my .22, .243, and 50 cal Black powder. I was always impressed with the clarity of the scope picture and again, I wasn't going to thread any needles with it, but on my .243 and Black Powder I was getting 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards. I finally had one that the reticles fell down after many years of use and using 150 grains of BP. So I went and bought my first "quality" scope and I bought the cheapest NIkon they had for $150. But I still love the Tasco scopes that I still have.

I recently bought 2 new BARRA 1100z .22cal air rifles($225 ea.) for my backyard 50-yard range setup. I needed 2 rifle scopes, as the rifles come without any sights, but do have the 20mm picatinny rail on top. So I bought 2 of these CV Life scopes, simply based on pricepoint. I am very impressed with them, and now I stumbled across this video that makes me feel even better. These are the first scopes I've ever owned, and I didnt realize that the reticule had a focus adjustment. 🤷‍♂So I'm glad I found this video. Thanks. Also, I needed the raised scope mounts, because the rifle's 10 shot magazine needed the clearance in order to function properly. I highly recommend. With 38 grain slugs(60+FPE), I can easily dispatch ground hogs at 50 yards.

I was a young person without a lot of money once and the first scope I ever purchased was around $30. It worked fine at the range and I was able to zero it in, but every time it sat for a few months it lost zero.

I have two of these scopes one on a cheap bca 223 Wylde upper and one on my daughters 22lr Crickett. Never had a single problem with either of them and they both have a few thousand rounds through them. Best scope for beginner builds and rookie shooters in my opinion. Cheap enough to replace if broken and accurate enough to have a blast!

You did an exceptional job of photographing the scope from the eye's view. Nice to see you using a Canon DSLR in such a precise manner. You just don't see that on decent KZfaq videos. Nice production and I learned more things about scopes. Thank you.

Wranglerstar did basically this same test 2 years ago with a scope they made. Ron just explains what to look for, which is the important part. I learned about 3 things by watching this video alone. I never tested the zoom accuarcy before, now I definitly will. The eye relief test on paper I have never seen before.

Pretty comprehensive testing and you seem impressed by the price, fantastic. I don't have that particular brand, but I do have three similar priced or slightly more expensive 3-9 x40 scopes which have served me very well for my purpose/use, although they have never been mounted on anything bigger than a 223 bolt action rifle, Thank you.

One sure test is surprisingly on a spring powered airgun . they bounce back and forwards several times unlike a firearm that only goes onec back. It's surprising how many people complain about this and so it's a great test of build quality. Very interesting set of tests great information 👍🇬🇧🇺🇲

Total agreement here... I'm in the (sadly and pitifully...) unarmed UK too and have been looking for a cheap/affordable scope for my Weirauch HW77 (only 11.4 lb/ft because stupid gun laws, and 12 lb/ft or greater = 5years jail time...) and have destroyed (ie will not hold zero, sometimes can hear pieces jingling-around inside, etc) several "affordable" (under £80/$95) scopes in less than 50 pellets each, so I'd be interested to see if one of these can take the punishment of a springer or not? I modified a Magpul AR15 Backup Iron-Sight to create an aperture rear-sight that works with the standard Weirauch front-sight that I use for plinking, squirrels and other small vermin out to around 50 yards pretty effectively, but I turned 50 last year and my eyes would appreciate a bit of magnification (but only if it'll hold zero...), so I might see how much I can get one of these shipped to the UK for, and I'll report-back here how it holds-up IF it doesn't cost a stupid amount with the shipping...?

Hi Ron and thank you for this video. That was a pretty good test and the scope help amazingly well. For the price, you can't beat it. I think this scope would be perfect for a young shooters first .22 rifle considering that they might not be as careful in handling, as a more experiecned shooter might be. If it gets damaged from an accidental drop or bump into a tree while you're walking through the woods, it's not a huge loss. I was really impressed with the water proof test. I thought, if there was going to be a fail, anywhere, it would have failed the water proof test. But, obvoiusly, that didn't happen. So, anyway, thank you, again, for the video and the opportunity to (proxy) test out an inexpensive, but not cheap, scope for ourselves. I think a "cheap" scope would have failed most, if not all, of your tests. JMHO Sincerely, Rich Williams Astor, Florida 32102 USA!

I have 2 of the AO adjustable versions of that scope ($40) on pcp air rifles and they are amazing for the money... They're not quite as clear as my hawke, but for 1/5th price they are plenty clear enough... Hole on hole at any airgun range is the norm. Anyway, awesome, awesome review! Maybe the best scope review I've ever seen. Truly appreciate it! Thanks.

I bought something similar a few years back for use on a crossbow, but since then it moved to my benjamin 392 air rifle plinker. You can reset the parallax by loosening the front ring and turning the objective manually. I was able to adjust parallax this way, giving me a sharp image from around 15 meters to infinity (ish) . Its not the best of scopes but I really think that for the money it's a nice little workhorse with a clear image and definitely a keeper.

Thanks for this video. I recently bought a 'package deal' .22 that came with a cheap scope and mounts, and it has worked well so far. In fact, I like it... it is a fixed scope, 4 x 32. I figure it is probably better than the 'good' first scope I experienced on my Dad's .22 back in 1960 which gave good service even though it was a bit cloudy to look through. Best wishes from New Zealand.

Cheap scopes can be very good. I have a Ruger 77 I purchased in1981 and being short on cash at the time, mated it to a Tasco 4X Silver Antler scope, cheapest I could find at the time. This is a very accurate rifle with a favorite handload. I set zero after sighting in and have not had to change that setting since after over 40 years hunting with it and at least a 1000 practice rounds still holding that zero.

Great video, thank you for the tip on checking eye relief. Some cheap scopes just punch way above their weight, I put a $12 Chinese 3-9-40 illuminated reticle on my 22mag just for laughs and to see how long before it breaks. 15 years it’s been on that rifle getting thrown in and out of the shooting vehicle. Has been sighted in twice in all that time, has been dropped and keeps working

Thanks for this presentation, Ron. I purchased 2 of these scopes for use on my springer .177 pell rifles as recommended by another reliable channel. Their performance has been excellent in spite of brutal double recoil that is common to springer air rifles. Your confirmation of quality for a low priced scope brings me confidence in the quality of these optics.
