Winding Sticks Build (Hand Tool Woodworking)

I made these traditional winding sticks as way to use up scrap lumber and build some hand tool woodworking skills. I had some walnut left over from another project and some holly pen blanks for inlays that contrast the dark wood and make reading the sticks easy. These are great hand tools for reading twist in rough lumber using traditional woodworking techniques or just flattening one side of a board by hand that's too wide for your jointer. Flattening my roubo style work bench will be the first task for these tools

A joy to watch your videos but they stopped? I admire your imagination to keep coming up with great ideas and sharing your passion for woodwork. Well done. One Handed Maker - Australia

Wow, very cool~! I've seen how expensive a set of winding sticks can be (milled aluminum or other metal), but I'm definitely going to tackle this project based on your presentation of it. Love the contrast between the walnut and holly. Thanks for sharing~!

2:14 "Of course you could just use a bandsaw to make this cut in a couple of seconds, but what fun is that?" This is the inside of my mind every time my dad visits and starts telling me how much easier it is with X or Y power tools

Thanks! Its a fun project that doesn't take too long. I built so many plywood projects lately I felt I had to get at least 1 traditional woodworking build in.

1. I came across your channel because I've been searching online to see if anyone sells winding sticks at a decent price 2. The wedge you created to use against your shooting board is a genius idea, I will now be using that for my projects

Very nice Dave, I always enjoy your hand tool only projects. Awesome thing to watch. I use a similar method when I am making twists. I use 2 welding rods to make sure the orientation of the bar is correct. They not as nice as your bars. 👍

Thanks! They definitely don't need to be fancy. Any scraps (or welding rods) would do.

Great little project and the winding sticks look great. Have you thought about inlaying some small magnets in them to keep them together and easier store? I think your design makes them good candidates for magnets.

"But what fun is that?" I couldn't have said this better ;-) Unfortunately walnut is not so easy to get here in Germany (and it will never end up in the scrap bin 😂 for sure)

Came out great! I’ve been wanting to make some for myself, also new lie Nielsen plane? 🤔
@TwistedWorkshop77
@TwistedWorkshop77 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I did pick up a couple new planes. LN no.5 and a 50 degree bronze no. 4. Both are really nice. I love my old bedrock no. 5 but the extra weight and super fine depth adjustment of the LN is amazing.

LN👍. Simply delightful planing. Acquired a 5 1/2 recently. Wish I done so much sooner. Plus, your winding sticks are lovely. Nice demo.

I recently bought a Lie-Nielsen low angle jack plane, and low angle rabbet bench plane. The upgrade in my hand plane quiver has felt like going from driving a Datsun to a Cadillac.😄

Yeah they are easier to read then my old ones. Not sure if its the contrast (my old ones were maple with walnut strip across the top) or if its because these are 6 inches longer then my old ones

Love the content but haven’t seen anything new in quite awhile. Does this channel still exist or put out new content? Did something happen to prevent any new content in over a year? Was curious because I found this channel late but was impressed with the content and now it seems to have gone dormant.
