Adding a Planing Stop To The Roubo Workbench

I added this planing stop to my split top roubo work bench to give me more options for holding work pieces when hand planing. My workbench has a good tail vise but sometimes it is easier and more efficient to use a traditional planing stop or bench stop, especially on thin boards and work pieces that are too short to clamp between the tail vise and bench dogs. This is a great addition to a hand tool woodworking bench and is easy to make. I made the metal part out of a piece of scrap 3/16" mild steel.

A great addition to the bench Dave and it looks fantastic. Your set up is almost identical to what I was taught on over 40 years ago and I loved the simplicity of it. I've considered adding something similar a few times and just might after seeing this 😊 Blessings to you all there ॐ

Thanks! I like it so far. My last bench had a board that could slide up on the end and it worked pretty well but the teeth on this one combined with a batten allows me to do just about anything I could do with my tail vise. Good hearing from you!

The oak dowel to help the mounting screws grab is a great idea. It would no doubt be fine without, but it's not a lot of work for a lot of insurance.

I like that, especially for thin stock as that is where I find the biggest problem when planing. I might just have to make something like this for my bench!

Well courage and craftsmanship ain't purchasable, fortunately you have both. 👍 The square opening all way through the workbench is definitely a callenge. Very interesting how you did it.

Very clean and easy to follow installation. Thanks. I have one of these to install on my newly built Moravian Workbench and this video is most helpful. I usually do not prefer background music during instructional videos, as there are those of us with hearing sound discrimination issues that have problems with spoken words competing with the music. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. The music comes out at different levels depending on what device you are watching. Before I publish a video I listen to it on my phone and on the TV and computer to make sure it doesnt compete with my voice. Most of the time it works out

I appreciate your attention to detail. Nice project. BTW, you skipped over the most difficult part - making the teeth. You went from a straight edge to teeth with no transition :-)

I did. It was slow and didn't make good footage because I was being real cautious. I just used the triangle file to make them but I was told that if it would have been easier if I hack sawed down a little first then went to the file. Getting the teeth right was definitely the hardest part!

Very very nice, like it. But in 9:27 Why you not put "bullet catch", and make the wood slight loose? so you don't need to hit the wood hard.

Thanks! No. They are both still tight. I think putting the dowel in so the screws can bite in to cross grain helped. Also, I don't use the stop on every project

Thanks! Yea it's getting pretty hot over here and I sweat if I just think about working! It's nice over there this time of year I hear. I will visit there someday. Such a long flight though. I work for a contractor that builds satellite antennas that deploy in space. I've been there for 12 years. Before that I was an auto technician for Ford and Chrysler for about 12 yrs.

Thanks Rob. These have been around for hundreds of years in one form or another. There are a couple companies that sell the metal part but it seemed simple enough to make so I gave it a shot

First, I'd like to thank you for your bench build! I made mine Dec 2019- Jan 2020. Your videos helped me tremendously!!! Second, why a planing stop as well as the dog holes? Does this new stop have better holding than the tail vise into the a dog?

Thanks for the feedback. The planing stop just gives me another option to hold work. I mostly use it on wide boards that I am hand planing and use the gap stop and the plane stop to hold the board still

Simple but very efficient and strong design. Of course the way you built it is remarkable! I would love to have one too, but will have to build a bigger workbench first. Just have a mini workbench now. Did you apply anything to the metal to prevent it from rusting?

Thanks. I polished it with buffing compound. A polished surface seems to help keep the metal from rusting as fast. I also applied a little polyurethane to top of the wood block but I'm not sure how long that will last on the metal

@@TwistedWorkshop77 I use Japanese Camellia oil on my plane irons. It doesn't gum even after a long time. That's the best for tool iron.

Sorry for my ignorance, I'm new to woodworking, but why isn't the planing stop simply put into a dog hole, why does it have to have a special place cut out for it? I saw this first on Schwartz's workbench video and his recent book and it has me scratching my head. Thx in advance.

Good question. I use my bench dogs as planing stops all the time. The one I made here is just larger, I can mount the metal teeth to it (would be difficult to put teeth on a 3/4 in dowel and have it hold up to the pressure of planing) and its closer to the stop gap in the middle of the bench. This allows me to wedge wider boards between the planing stop and the stop that runs the length of the bench

@@TwistedWorkshop77 Agreed, putting teeth into a dowel is not the solution, what I meant was why not a metal planing stop placed in a dog hole similar to a holdfast; the head could be as big as you want, just the body would need to fit in the dog hole. There must be a reason for why it has its own place, I'm trying to figure it out lol.

I think we can still only send chocolate bars through the tv! The planing stop is pretty convenient to have though. I just saw a different version that Paul Sellers put on his work bench that looks nice and doesnt require you to drill all the way through the bench. I think Lee Valley sells them

Thanks! From what I've read, they used a plane stop similar to this one for thin stock. Or a bench hook with a thin fence or a thin board clamped across the bench that the thin board being worked on could be pushed against.

So far so good. I am being stingy with the space though. My equipment is set up pretty close to the way it was in the garage. I like having a nice open space in the back of the shop.

Yea. 5k. They just cheap 20 dollar fixtures but they work great and put out even light.

Twisted Woodshop yea u gotta love the editing. Lol. Tht was a pain hanging tht air filter. Alot heavier than it looks on top of not trying to bend the thin metal its made with.
