I explain how I use a little buddy heater to deal with frosted windows in a deer hunting box blind. This particular box blind has insulated vinyl sliding windows, which are my first choice for windows in a cold climate gun hunting box blind.

I should mention that my preference has been to not insulate box blinds because it so often becomes an invitation for mice.

I just subbed , your blind builds are great and I'm in Midwest. So much of your content I intend to use for my blind / cabin build. I love to hunt up high in tree but I'm 55 yrs old and every year there's at least 3 sits that I can't sit any longer and know that if I was protected from elements I wouldn't be inside on the couch ! Plus my grandbaby is going to be hunting soon and I'm looking forward to that ! 👍

Thanks Mike, I appreciate it! 35 deer seasons of freezing cold sits got to be enough for me also.

There are also insulated basement/casement type windows that can be installed to tip inward allowing the entire window are to be used instead of 1/2 as in the sliding option. They are available at Menards & Home Depot.

I had considered those, but liked being able to crack these open just a bit at times.

I use a taller slider window in my blinds that I use for bowhunting. They work great and the deer are totally oblivious to you opening them, even when they are only 15 yards away :)

Good to know that the taller version works for archery hunters. Did you paint them, or did you just leave them white?

@@UncleBucks In my original blind I was pressed for time and did not want the paint smell so I wrapped the outside in camo duct tape. That was 10 years ago and the tape is long gone and now when I build a new blind I dont even bother to camo them. In western WI the white does not seem to bother them:)

@Blind Luck outdoors I appreciate your feedback. I'm thinking it would only be a problem if they happen to see it moving while you open it. Otherwise it's just another birch tree or something to them.

We use some that black sound acoustic foam to help insulate the blind and it also soaks up the your voice and other sounds that happen in your blind. We get cold here in the Texas Panhandle but not your kind of COLD.....I enjoy your posts

Thanks! I like the idea of doing anything to muffle sounds. Have you had any trouble with mice chewing on the foam panels?

Excellent idea David!! But I think it will have to be done patiently, so the glass doesn't crack. Have any first-hand experience with this??

Good info Brett! Luckily this deer season wasn't real cold here in MO. Few days in the teens then you hunt from the cabin!

South central Pennsylvania. I usually fill my tags in archery. I’m older and have all my blinds on the ground. No more climbing 😋. Wondering if you show your successful hunts. Thanks for sharing

Greetings Lou. I archery hunt on occasion out of a pop up tent and we do have a redneck bale blind - from which I shot my last WI buck with a bow two years ago. I don't notch my buck tags every season, but I'm selective, and I hunt where hunting pressure is high and mature bucks are few and far in between. As for now, I prefer the view from an elevated position, but hunting from the ground definitely has its advantages. There are a couple older videos on my channel of past hunts. I haven't gotten too into recording hunts because it takes so much extra equipment and setting up to make it happen, and so many hunts end up being uneventful sits. As I continue to grow my channel and gain experience creating videos, hunting, and maybe even some fishing adventures may become more a part of it.

We have decided, since this year opening day of the Wisconsin gun season we froze are butts off. To build a few tower stands. but like you have mentioned how do you keep out those pesky mice. If a person was to insulate the stand i would think covering the inside in some kind of paneling or 1/4" or 3/8" plywood would be needed.

I agree, but any wall cavity makes for a good nest if they can chew into it. A subscriber once suggested using "built rite" asphalt coated sheeting board as an interior insulation material. I've thought about giving that a try. It's not expensive.

Seems like a windshield scraper would work well for the fixed pane once you take the sliding pane out.

Not a fan of sliders. Had them in my blind and removed them and put lexan. Just find them too noisy to open .

So far, these have been nice and quiet to operate, but I do like lexan windows with hinges also.

@@UncleBucks it would depend on your situation. Not saying they are terrible but where I hunt, deer slip out 20 feet from me. On a dead quite day, there’s no way I could open a slider. But they are definitely a quick and easy option. Great video. Cheers

Hi, Brett. Another good video and topic to tackle. You have got me convinced to build a 6' x 8', and that's my intentions this coming year. One thing I'm considering is building a roof over my windows. The main reason is to keep any sunlight from coming into the box blind. That'll keep me from being blinded by the sun, and prevent the rain/elements from having a chance to penetrate window seals. Do you suppose it might help keep the frost at bay as well?

Thank you Terry! I wondered if an awning would help with frost. I'm not really sure. Perhaps someone will see this thread and share what they know about it based on their experience. I was thinking that maybe having fold down shutters on the outside might work to keep windows free of frost and elements. Just prop them up when you get in the blind in the morning. They could serve as a sun shade also....?

@@UncleBucks Maybe more will weigh in. I live in Arkansas. It gets cold here at times, but nothing like what you Northerners deal with. Brrrr! I get cold just thinking about it. 🥶

I like the idea of awnings, but I think they may prevent the sun from being able to melt the frost on the windows. I have a two foot overhang on my house and the old windows still got frost on the bottom of them.
