I took two similar Lenovo x240 laptops and loaded one with Windows 10 Pro and one with Linux Mint. Let's see which one loads the OS the fastest.
The Windows 10 Pro machine has a slightly faster processor i5-4200 vs i3-4010 so you would think that it is slightly faster.

I abandoned Windows back in 2014 cause of a defective update of W8.1 that forced me to format the system and reinstall after getting BSODs at boot time. I'm such a happy Linux user now.

My wife has windows 10 on her laptop and it was incredible slow and full of spyware. She was going to recycle the laptop when I told her to give it to me. I installed mint on it and used a windows 10 theme - now she wants the old laptop back lol

Have you tried this with a fully shut down W10? The standard W10 'shutdown' is a form of hibernate, to give users the illusion of a fast start up, so you aren't really doing a true comparison. FYI my wife's Thinkpad running W10 is noticeably slower after 12 months normal usage, while my Linux machines show no significant slowdown after three years usage.

I didn’t know that about the shutdown/ off option.

@@MikeDancy Yeah, its called "fast boot" in the bios. Its like hibernation mode where a page file is used to store the user session. In fast boot a much smaller page file is used to store the windows kernel in memory so it doesn't have to do a full boot.
@seadve
@seadve 3 жыл бұрын
Its fast startup not fast boot. Fast boot has something to do with drivers in bios level boot, while fast startup is cold shutdown meaning it closes all users then hibernate (which is used by windows by default).

Now its make sense! If W10 shutdown is another form of hibernate, that explain why HDD wear down faster and become much slower over small period. More severe damage if you use SSD!

Honestly, the speed differences are negligible between 10 pro and mint 20 for most use cases, and if there are noticeable differences in speed, it's because speed is heavily dependent on what you're trying to accomplish. I use them both for different reasons, and they are both perfectly capable OS's. I know linux users love their OS, but windows 10 pro is a very nice OS if you're unbiased and doing tasks that just work better using windows.

I like windows 10 too. If the hardware can run it, I’ll usually choose windows. But Linux mint is so smooth.

Except that Windows is very resource dependent. I just switched to Mint 20.1 in my almost 9 year Vaio E series laptop with 500 GB HDD and 2 gb of RAM. The difference after the installation is staggering. It now serves as a family PC.

@@22b_gc8 True, if you're using an older pc then it limits your options, and even newer versions of linux might decrease your overall pc experience depending on how old the pc is.

@@BlizzGMX It will mostly serve as a browsing machine, but yeah maybe the coming versions of Linux may also not help. Adding that it is somewhat upgradable ( like RAM and storage. So should be covered for atleast next 5 years or so.

My windows 10 laptop was almost completely unusable. So slow and dysfunctional I thought it was hardware failure. Tried mint xfce on it, now it's quick, snappy, and reliable. Night and day difference.

Yes. Windows will always lose as it runs lots of backgrounds apps. It's blotted as hell. Even if it booted faster once you typed in the password the desktop icons will take a second to load. Press the windows button and it will take some time to load. Click on the volume button and it will take some time to load. Linux is very light and it doesn't take time to load the desktop (compared with windows obviously it takes some time but still better then windows)

I just switched my ryzen 3700x desktop to linux mint 20. It's so fast that it's crazy. When I was booting from the USB 2.0 thumb drive, mint was about as fast as my old windows 10 pro. I am so done with having windows as my main OS. Never again will I be stuck in their little ghetto.

what a stupid comparison of OS'es. First of all you must do the comparison on exactly the same hardware and second, windows uses fast boot which is a semi hibernation shutdown and should be turned off to make the comparison relevant.
