@@SomeGadgetGuy Most of the games take about 30 seconds to a minute to load. Games like TMNT: Shredder's Revenge runs fine on ULTRA settings. Temtem I average about 35 fps on Ultra. It some areas it may drop down to 9 fps. In combat it is a consistent 25 fps or higher. If I set to high or medium, I am getting about 50 fps. Whisker Squadron Survivor, I am getting about 15 fps consistently on max settings at 1920 x 1200. If I drop the quality down to medium, I am getting better results (closer to about 25 fps or higher.) Absolutely. It won't make a huge difference if you work mostly from a desktop, and energy infrastructure and costs aren't a concern for you, but just like Apple, when you want to go mobile, you need a better performance per watt. Right now, we're matching or beating the performance of mobile X86 chips while using less power. That's a solid improvement for portable computers.

I've been PREACHING for ARM computing for years now. I really believe we could have made this transition for consumers five or six years ago if we'd had better developer support. As for RAM, it really depends on your workload. The thing with these new "AI" PCs, if you think you'd maybe be interested in some of the NPU capabilities, I would try to step up to more RAM. AI models EAT RAM. 16GB is solid for a general purpose Windows machine. With unified memory going to the CPU and the GPU AND the NPU, 32GB gives you a little more breathing room.

@@SomeGadgetGuy My brain must be tired as I completely overlooked shared memory. Hmm, I don't think I'll do anything NPU and I don't think my heaviest applications have Windows on ARM support (3D printing slicers), so I think 16GB should be fine for my use case with X Elite. Thanks for the help!

I've been REALLY frustrated by phone reviewers just reading off geekbench scores. They tell you NOTHING about actual app performance. They only tell you how well they can run the benchmark.

Just updated my surface "pro" 9 to this 24h2 preview and see literally no performance boost in all the scenarious. I've picked a few games (not because of I consider it as a gaming device, no, but because it is a really good measure for performance per watt). Noita - bad as it was, Sons of the forest - awful as it was, Valheim - won't load after main menu but previously was fine, necrodancer - awful lags in such a simple game. The same again - or this new fancy emulator wasn't released yet or it has no impact on SQ3(8cx gen 3). Numbers in geekbench is quite impressive but all that stuff drains the same 20w+ from a battery and that is a result so close to intel's 11 gen cpus that it's not funny anymore. Would really love to see you comparing your tablet to something amd based. I have 7535u and it crushes the sq3 in all scenarious. (Keeping it on battery saver power plan that makes it consume the same 20-25 watts, but I have more control and compatibility. Probably this new x elite won't be a better deal, but we'll see I guess

We'll see. AMD has been doing good work, and I love my 8945HS mini PC, but even they aren't matching what we've seen from X Elite so far. I'm confident 780M will probably eke out wins against Adreno for gamers, but at higher power draw. It's why Qualcomm has been careful not to call this first gen of X Elite a "gamer" solution.
@sumechoo

@@SomeGadgetGuy I really hope you're right, but I saw mentions that elite's adreno will be the same architecture (the 6xx one) and it have good chances to be true. Waiting for a review then :)

Right. Which means we shouldn't expect it to "win" at gaming. It should be better than a steam deck though. So for folks who NEED to carry a laptop for work, they might not WANT to carry both a laptop and a console, we're still in pretty good shape for some moderate gaming on the go. I can't get this kind of performance on any Intel parts on battery, and if my AMD laptop has a discrete GPU, I probably need to plug that in too. It's all about the right tool for the right job.

At this point we should call this operating system Spyware/Windows, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Spyware plus Windows.

Yeah. Recall isn't great. I have to believe that will be easy to disable on Windows Pro devices, but I also need to see this hardware gain more traction so I can get better Linux support. We already have a build of debian from Qualcomm...

It's a stupid feature to bake into an OS like this, but it's dumb to think it won't be easily disabled, especially on Windows Pro machines. We want this hardware to succeed so we can see it in other devices like Steam Deck clones and Linux PCs. Qualcomm already delivered an experimental build of Debian www.qualcomm.com/developer/blog/2024/05/upstreaming-linux-kernel-support-for-the-snapdragon-x-elite
