What would early KZfaq be if it weren't for Windows Movie Maker? Granted, we interpret it as low quality now, but at the time of its release it was an impressive program to be included free with Windows.

MintleafCakes dude, 009 sound system is a youtube meme, not a wmm one. Back in the day, youtube allowed it's users to replace the audio of the video completely. This was useful, when you just posted a slideshow or a video without music. So, you were able to choose a music track when editing video on youtube. And guess what song was the most popular?

My music teacher hated the missing features in Movie Maker Live so much that he still had us use Movie Maker 2.1 (this was only a couple of years ago). It has some annoying crash bug when editing title cards that resulted in me crashing Movie Maker and losing my unsaved work so many times that I managed to figure out exactly how to trigger it and got in the habit of saving every time before I put in a title card. I kind of miss Movie Maker, not because it was any good, but because it was convenient and free. It is a pain to find a good, easy to use, free video editor for PC.

Meanwhile, the final version of Movie Maker had a bug where if the file got too big (that being, from my observation, a video 1 hour+ long) the program had a random chance of crashing. So, when editing a video that was an hour or several hours long, I had to make sure to save periodically in case it would crash while I was editing. Also, the trigger in that case was generally an attempt to trim.

I'll be honest. No program is shitty or useless, if you know how to use it right. I use Windows Movie Maker (the 2012 version) to edit together my videos. I tend to use little to no transitions, and always try to think outside of the box. Simply, I do everything I can to make it seem like it ISN'T Movie Maker. It's actually pretty reliable, and can export videos in 1080p HD quality, not just 480p. And best of all, it was free. Why pay over $300 dollars for Sony Vegas or something similar when you could pay nothing for something that's still a pretty good program?
@justtree2266
@justtree2266 7 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. I also use Movie maker 2012 for my videos but I use the animations for comedic effect and so forth. Yeah sure, it looks bad but it works to it's advantage. Plus for a free editing software, it really is impressive on what you can do with it. Push its capabilities to its max if you will.

If it's one thing Windows Movie Maker did, was unknowingly giving a good majority of the public a sort of entry way into video editing in a way that was mostly reserved for those who either had the cash to afford that equipment or took up videography in school. The entry-way was very limited and it was really more a niche/geek thing for someone who wanted to get into electronics, filmmaking or broadcasting. Back in the 90's, I used to pick up issues of "Videomaker Magazine" at a local convenience store and gazed over all the articles and ads for a lot of neat products that were coming out there. The "Video Toaster" you showed in your clip was one of the best video editing software/hardware titles you could get for an Amiga computer at the time (preferably a 2000/3000/4000 model). I saw one of these in college back in the mid 90's but never got to work on one. medium.com/people-gadgets/the-gadget-we-miss-the-video-toaster-93509e978549 The Commodore Amiga (especially the 500 model) was one early entry way for many budding video enthusiasts to produce their own videos using programs developed for the computer to create titles to animation and other features as the Amiga had composite outputs available to plug into any VCR. With an added genlock adapter, another VCR or camera could be added into the Amiga to allow for superimposed graphics or animation as well, this led to some of the first anime fansubbing in this country thanks to a program developed on the Amiga to allow for timed subtitles to record over the original source. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJZlgqR8uruZZoE.html Aside from computer-based equipment, there had been a number of small-time companies that released "PROsumer" level equipment for the hobby/novice crowd from Sima to JVC to Ambico and others, but the best of them all was Videonics, who released a slew of audio/video effects/editing equipment during the 1990's such as their Video Equilizer, the Digital Video Mixer (MX-1) and the Video Titlemaker (of which they made several generations of). Each product was near or close to broadcast quality for its time and I only wished I had bought these things when they were new. Recently a high school teacher in "Media Arts" gave me his old MX-1 during Open House! I was glad to receive it finally! I wish I had some more! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMuSYKxo0cvKg3U.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oamVhK-lu92Xj6c.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNCfmLyX1djJZ3U.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bJmKfs9k152YqGQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdaSnLugv7aUmqc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rZ-Sitylu9OxlY0.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mMqdiq-dssylZac.html Of course what really changed the map were "Non-Linear Editors" such as what Adobe developed with its "Adobe Premiere" app. For Microsoft, Windows Movie Maker created a simpler route for anyone to navigate its user-friendly controls. Thereby giving rise to the notion that anyone could create the sort of remix/youtube poop vids that became all the rage a decade back. Such concepts as those were actually around much longer in the analog days but was mostly restricted to exercises done by film students while learning how to time their edits on professional decks/controllers. I used to see these videos all the time back then and what Movie Maker did was merely lowered the bar far down for anyone, regardless of talent, to cross.

Microsoft seems to have a habit of making stuff with potential, then killing them off with or without a good alternative in the works. I remember that Windows Movie Maker 2012 does not have the option of importing custom effects even though previous versions did support them.

With Windows Movie Maker, I was able to make a Disney knockoff consisting of public domain cartoons. It was never released since the distributer complained about the "low bitrate", something which I never succeeded getting around it, even when using a video conversion software. I hope that Microsoft Story Remix would solve this.

Fun fact - if you look online, there are some alternate sites offering downloads for Windows Live Movie Maker 2012, meaning it’s essentially not dead. You have to be careful, though, as a lot of them are just adware or viruses.

I used to use Windows Live Movie Maker to make videos up until this year when I switched to Magix Pro Plus. What annoyed me about WMM was that it pre-rendered every video to WMV before you could edit it. This made even simple videos a pain to edit. Despite this I do miss its dead simple layout. Everything is spelled out for you and you don't have to go stumbling about like in Magix.

When I bought a new laptop with windows 10 I had to upgrade my software to 64bit versions and was surprised Microsoft had killed off movie maker which was a bit inconvenient at the time as it forced me to rush out and buy and editor as I couldn’t find a suitable free editor.

I used to use Movie Maker back when I used Windows 7 before I switched to Mac. Even back then, Apple's iMovie was miles ahead in terms of capability and UI design. (And that still holds true now.) Apple's been the leader when it comes to content/art creation. While I use Premiere Pro right now, I hope to switch to Final Cut Pro sometime in the future because of its faster render times.
