Glad to come across a finance guy like myself. I'm also considering a MacBook but have some reservations regarding key apps not working as well. So is Parallels a perfect solution to running Windows on Mac and are there any drawbacks to not running Windows natively? I'll be using Excel, PowerBI, Dynamics, SAP and the likes. Also do Windows apps on Parallels lack functionality, for example Alt shortcuts on Excel?
@LukeBarousse

@@emadahmed7145 yeah, it's not a perfect solution. If you are going to be working in Window apps all day, I recommend just getting a PC instead of a Mac. The "MacHUB" killed me! 🤣 I use Parallels 19 on a Mac Studio and it runs really well and seamlessly. I prefer to run it in non-coherence mode because I like to keep OS interaction completely separate, it is just a preference. One huge caveat with Parallels 19 that perhaps you mention in another of your videos is that for version 19, it now ONLY installs Windows "Pro", unlike earlier versions where you can install the cheaper "Home" version. I bought an "OEM" version of Windows 11 Pro for $80 instead of paying the full $200 license since I do not intend to use it in any other machine. Anyhow, great information!

A good alternative is running Windows on a separate machine using a hypervisor. I chose that route because I had some 24/7 workloads I wanted to run. A great internet connection is a prerequisite but that’s not too hard to come by in an urban setting.

Parallels is what we in ghe business call a type 2 hypervisor. In fact, to run a VM you cannot without a hypervisor involved. I too run hypervisors. I prefer Vsphere products, but there are indeed multiple options. The benefit of a type 1 hypervisor is also awesome which sounds like they may be what you could be doing. The downside with the setup is that you don't have access as easily on the go. Happy computing!

Asahi Linux announced nested virtualization on M2's so there is hope that Apple will release it in their virtualization kit. As for Bootcamp type of functionality, I'm assuming that's in MIcrosoft's court.

I have a question, Alex: have you noticed any hit on the battery performance when you run parallels? As Windows 11 (or 10 for what matters) runs on a x86-64 architecture and parallels does that translation as far as I know. I believe that would be possible. Not sure the excitement is warranted. You always had to pay for an upgrade to a new version, which happened on a yearly basis. Now they call it "subscription". In the end, it's basically the same thing. You can cancel at any time and just keep the version you have. So it's entirely different from, say, Adobe, where you lose access to everything once you cancel your subscription. Here in Europe, I pay €54.99 p.a. (they just raised it from €49.99 because... reasons). Sounds reasonable to me.

Was funny when the bossman got a brand new kitted out Surface with that fulcrum hinge within a day of announcement, across the pond in the UK, showing it off and trying to persuade his dev team to take free laptops and couldn't get my teams boss to stop using his old little Macbook Air.

Video idea/request : Make a video with windows 11 development tests (not wsl) like java/android/npm/c++/C# big projects builds. Parallels with windows probably OK too. And compare speeds in windows with Windows Defender ON (default) and then fully OFF(turn off Realtime protection, Self Protection and everything else you find there). From my experience, results could be drastic sometimes. Especially in multicore/multiprocess scenarios. Note that for quick tests its easier to turn Defender off temporarily in settings, because if you want to add full exclusions you need to add EVERY dev-related path as "folder exclusion" AND "process exclusions" or Defender will still scan it and slow it down.

People ask why bother with this??? I still have two 2015-era macbook pros that are used daily, and have never skipped a beat. Whereas my windows laptops/desktops at the office have historically been trashed after three or four years' use. My 13" mbp is my around the house laptop -- the battery has been screaming at me for years to service it, I've got to believe it's at 1500+ cycles, but I can still get an hour or two out of it on youtube or whatever. And the other is a fully loaded, bent in half 15" mbp beauty with a smashed screen that I bought used in 2016 for $400 lol. I've used it exclusively as a desktop for the past 8 years running Windows 10 on two external monitors, it still runs like a champ. I actually hate macOS for the most part, especially its monitor/window control, but Apple hardware and build quality can't be beat.

Parallels and hardware Rosetta translation is very impressive, the only unsolvable issue I found was that certain software I used that uses Intel NEON instructions didn't work (scientific visualisation stuff, mainly) Also the platform is reported as "ARM64" so certain developer tools will think that they need to build for ARM, when in fact they are running on what appears to them to be a native x64 machine. That can cause issues with some dev toolchains in my experience, not unsolvable but difficult to resolve. But for standard consumer programs it works extremely well.

First off I want to say I love your videos and the channel. Excellent stuff all around :) I bought a fully spec’d out M3 iMac for the home and it’s been wonderful. I installed Parallels without a hitch and am running a few older games that work perfectly. Once question I have is what do you recommend I use to capture the gameplay from Parallels? I’ve seen a lot of videos talk about screen recording but I haven’t found any way to record the audio and video within a specific window within Parallels. Any advice would be super appreciated.

Another point is virtualized mac under mac - virtualized mac cannot use apple id (no real serial number), so no virtual build machine for ios development... This is a type 2 hypervisor. Those in general do not tend to have dedicated/isolated access to the hist GPU. For most folks needs this is completely fine. If you have a niche case then that can be different. Keeping in mind this isn't your standard windows 11 either btw. This is ARM version of windows. Folks wanting hard-core graphics tend to be better off likely with a type 1 and the regular desktop version. 90%+ of folks won't care and this is great. Macs don't play well with third party GPU's either or dedicated cards. So if you're heavy into that world macs aren't neccesarily great for many folks in general gor it.

By the way, you need to buy Parallels AND Windows 11... Also, I am wondering if all this "extra speed" comes from using Rosetta 2 or they reverse engineered this windows game conversion tool Apple launched, because although the M2 MAX chip is fast, it is not that faster than the new intels...

No offense, but you seem q bit lost. For one, this is windows 11 ARM. For two Windows has had x86 emulation for some time now built in so there is no reason they need to care about Rosetta. For 3, Apple did not come up with the gaming tool. They just took someone else's project from the folks on Linux that had been working on it and doing literally all the work with no help from apple and apple just added a few lines of code and it's a porting tool not even meant for consumers. Also, you have to kno2 how to measure performance. You don't just look at the CPU for that. There are several factors at play. For a laptop macs do major things like actually not require you to be plugged into the wall all the time due to poor battery life. Intel suck at that for their actual powerful CPU's that most folks do not even need or benefit from really.

I personally haven't seen anything indicating improvements. VMWare fusion has a Tech Preview that supports DX11 so there's alternative hypervisor for gaming that's free but it looks like gaming improvements are being made through compatibility layers and wine using Apple's GPTk (a testing tool being used by the community to accomplish some DX12 gaming) and crossover.

I wouldn't recommend that at all nor do you need to folks. It is already fairly snappy out the box. You have to be trying to do too much or went cheap on the RAM if it isn't. For what 98%+ of users will do it works just about flawlessly and you should never allocate all your host's RAM and CPU to the VM as it does the opposite of helping.

Common answers to the question: "is that a camera?" when you are obviously carrying a camera around and you are using a t-shirt with the saying: "Yes, I am a KZfaqr and no I will not fix your computer": 1. "it is a laser cannon of death and destruction" 2. "just stop. just because I am not like you doesn't mean you may make jokes around my differences. I am a person, I exist, you insensitive arse!" 3. "Eyes down here and not at the camera, you pervert!" 4. "no, no, this is a parrot and I am a pirate"

A VM is not protected from its host. This couldn't be stressed enough. I was thinking about running a Windows VM for work on a Linux host but this came out as a bad choice from a security perspective. Basically the host needs access to the VM file to run it so it can manipulate whatever data there is on this file. This also means that any potential malware on the host, however unlikely with a Mac or Linux system, can get to the data on the VM drive.

Windows 11 runs fine on the base Air. Perhaps best not to be running anything else. On my base M1 Pro system, Windows 11 saves me having to get the Lenovo out, most of the time. Unlike the (2020 quad code i7) Lenovo, start up is a blink and you’ll miss it moment. Microsoft’s Intel emulation looks on a par with Rosetta. The surprising thing is the use of resources. I can be running a few things in each of Apple and Windows - things like VSCode, office apps and so on - memory rarely goes into yellow and it’s rare to see swap space use (red) reported.
