Yeah! Technically it’s called “coherence”. By any chance on your side, do the apps run slower though? Graphics wise… I didn’t try again since I did on an iMac 2020, now on an M1 Mac Studio, but I do remember having stuck to normal windowed mode because the floating coherence mode was lagging at times: mouse for example moved extremely slow. I do use a couple of 5K monitors plus a couple others non 5K. That said, the idea is magnificent, the running windows apps do feel just like as if it were running directly on Mac. I love parallels desktop and how far away it has come along… I even use 3dsmax like that now, no need for a separate windows PC just for that (granted, it’s minor low poly game work).

In Apple’s defense, wouldn’t Boot Camp on ARM be drastically different from the old Boot Camp? In the olden days, Macs were mostly standard PC hardware inside, so Boot Camp didn’t do much. Now on Silicon, Boot Camp would either have to map Windows and Linux to a ton of custom (and secretive) Apple hardware, or emulate PC hardware. Would it be any better than virtualization?
@Teku175
@Teku175 Жыл бұрын
I don't know what the future of BootCamp holds, and wanting to use Windows natively was a major factor for me to buy another Windows laptop last year instead of a M1 Pro MacBook Pro (I got an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 and have mixed feelings about it after owning it for 10 months). Apple has publicly said they're open to working on BootCamp for M1 once MS allows Windows ARM to be licensed outside of the Qualcomm contract. Let's see what happens. Apple is open to allowing/working on it, and Windows is now possible to (legally) be used on ARM. It's now Apple's turn to make good on their word.

@@Teku175 Apple Silicon hardware and boot process is _radically_ different from the SBBR-based platforms that Windows on ARM is designed to run on. Everything from the boot protocol to even the interrupt controller is different. While Microsoft has been known to bridge comparable differences with things like custom HAL drivers, I just can't see them putting so much effort into supporting native Mac booting, even if Apple were to provide documentation. Especially now that the deal with Parallels is in place, so they can just direct the customers who want a Mac solution to them. Boot Camp on Intel only worked because Intel Macs were literally PCs, with just slight modifications. Apple could provide Windows support by just writing a couple of drivers, booting Windows in itself was trivial, especially since Windows started supporting UEFI boot. Apple Silicon is an entirely different beast. Only Microsoft can write the custom variant kernel/HAL/bootloader set that would be necessary. My bet is that they won't.
@kFY514
@kFY514 Жыл бұрын
@@mairhart What do you mean about "the same graphics and virtualization problems"? KVM works in Asahi out of the box - there's just one layer of virtualization (Asahi is running natively), so there's no problem here. Graphics support is rudimentary at best, but that's because Asahi folks need to write a reverse-engineered graphics driver from scratch, which is obviously a difficult task, but mostly unrelated to Windows-on-Parallels issues.

I think part of the problem is that MS needs either to build Windows for other ARM SoCs or needs to hire silicon engineers to build their own like Apple did. I think the engineering can be done but MS needs to take this endeavor seriously.
@aberdeenmeadows
@aberdeenmeadows Жыл бұрын
The problem was that they had licensed Windows for ARM to one company for exclusive rights. When that agreement ended, then Microsoft was free to open up licensing. That is what this whole video and Microsoft announcement is all about. During the locked agreement, Microsoft provided for free use to all Parallels for Mac users a copy of their developer's version of Windows. Now, we can install the regular version of Microsoft Windows for ARM so long as we buy the license.

Microsoft designing their own processors would best optimize the Windows experience, especially in their MS built machines (i.e. surface laptop) However, they don't sell enough volume to integrate backwards into chip production to compete with intel or amd. They'd have to burn through an inordinate amounts of cash for many years to make a chip with comparable performance, given that the inccumbents stay still. On the other hand, Apple sells enough volume to justify backwards integration. Further, Apple's move into using ARM means they don't have to compete with Intel or AMD This is a move more realistic for Samsung to make. Imo, MS should focus on software, especially in AI where they have a large lead on Apple thanks to OpenAi. In the short term, MS can optimize integration with 3rd party hardware by forming tight partnerships with those manufacturers (Dell, Asus, etc). It'd be mutually beneficial since MS can influence the manufacturer on how to create better designs optimized for its hardware while the manufacturer can influence MS in better optimizing the OS for their hardware. As you said, they also need go full on in developing an Arm based ecosystem. It appears that is where the future is going towards, atleast for mass consumption. If theyre able to do that and sell enough volume (ARM powered Windows machines), they can consider backwards integratiom into chip manufacturing - Windows, Apple, & Samsung user

I suspect that for most people the most economical method is to just buy 2 computers if you really must have a Mac with the absurd prices Apple charges for upgrades. You're going to need a memory and storage upgrade, which puts you at $400. Put in another $200 and you can get a pretty decent PC laptop for $600. For me, the stuff I need Windows for requires drivers that only run on Intel Core processors 11th Gen and older, so AS isn't even an option. It technically works on all x86 processors, but on AMD or even Celeron chips it crashes a lot. I tried it on a Surface Pro X and it doesn't run at all - well it says it's running, but nothing works. That and games, but at that point Mac just disqualifies itself.

@@chimatasie7854 I've never had those specific issues other than slowing down. Prior to Windows 10, it would gradually slow down after years, but I don't think this is much of an issue anymore. The cheapest and perhaps easiest way to start is to backup all your data and reinstall Windows. It might save you from needing a new computer. With Apple Silicon, running Windows or Linux as your primary OS on a mac isn't practical anymore. If you buy a Mac, plan on using Mac OS. I prefer Windows or Linux over Mac most of the time, but I get by just fine on it. Lastly, is the PC you're having issues on much cheaper? If you're comparing a low-end $500 PC to a high[ish]-end $2,000 Mac, of course there's going to be a disparity. There may have been a time when Mac was significantly better than Windows around the XP and Vista years. But for the longest time, it's just a preference. The only differences is that after dropping the Butterfly keyboard MacBook Air, Apple doesn't make bad hardware anymore. Most PC manufacturers have the problem that they make both genuinely excellent products and products designed to be garbage, making finding a good computer more difficult.

As good as Parallels is, a virtual machine will never replace the native experience. Too many unnecessary abstraction layers always lead to a decreased performance which is unacceptable in itself. If this is truly the “official” way of running Windows on Macs now, this is officially one of the most terrible news in the coming months (years?) for the Mac community. Its sucks that they’ll never make regular drivers until Windows on ARM laptops keep up with the Macs. Running anything through a VM really is the best way to make it considerably slower and laggier. I guess, that’s what Microsoft wants for the Mac users. A software monopoly at its best, business as usual.

What do you mean when you say that Parallels was "not in the picture" in 2013? Parallels has been the top-performing option for running Windows in a VM on Mac since it was first released in 2006. It was built specifically to run Windows on macOS (Mac OS X as it was known as then). VMware Fusion wasn't released until 2007, and didn't achieve anything close to feature parity with Parallels until 2009. The only reason VMware saw more use in enterprise environments is that VMware had already established itself as the enterprise choice for virtualization. Did I mishear what you said? What I heard you say (at time index 00:19) does not make sense given what I recall from using switching to a Mac and using Parallels and VMware Fusion in the 2006 - 2010 period.

I don't know why you're talking like it's Microsoft that would write even a single driver for Windows on Apple Silicon. All Microsoft has to do is give their blessing to run Windows for ARM on non-Snapdragon CPUs, and Apple will do the rest, as they already said they would do, and as they ALWAYS have done on the Intel Macs. Either they or their hardware vendors wrote every single driver for Bootcamp, Microsoft had nothing to do with it. The only possible thing they may need to do is work with Apple to support Apple Silicon memory management, and they'd very likely just give Apple the NT kernel's source code (or just the relevant portions) like they typically do for high profile driver developers and let Apple write the necessary changes themselves. Though given that the dev of m1n1_Windows has shown that a bootloader could do that low-level work with just a hardware abstraction layer, it can literally all be done by Apple without a single thing being done by Microsoft other than allowing the purchasing of licenses for the ARM64 version of Windows. It's not unheard of for Apple to write specific firmware extensions explicitly for running Windows, they wrote an entire BIOS emulator for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 Bootcamp, and they expanded their EFI implementation to support Windows properly once 8 added support for EFI/UEFI. The same can be done here, all it takes is Apple adding a UEFI to the iBoot bootloader/firmware that AS Macs use. More info here for those interested: github.com/amarioguy/m1n1_windows

This video seems to make the assumption at least twice that when Apple said it was "up to Microsoft" for Windows to run natively on Apple Silicon, that it meant Microsoft would need to do the work. I don't think that was the case at all, because of Microsoft's Windows on ARM exclusivitiy agreement with Qualcomm that expired at the end of last year. With Bootcamp Apple was still responsible for distributing their own drivers and software for their hardware (aside from the standard components that had official drivers) and that would not change with ARM. The licensing agreement was Apple's excuse for no bootcamp on Apple Silicon, that situation has ended and the ball is back in Apple's court. If they want native support they can just ship their own drivers for it and a stub to make it bootable.
