Just because a virus isn't written for XP doesn't mean it won't run on XP. If the exploit in use also exists on XP and the virus program doesn't attempt to do anything exclusive to newer versions of windows, the virus could still infect an XP machine - and XP is no longer receiving updates to fix these exploits.

Windows 7 is generally still fine to use if, and only if, you use an updated browser (ex. Edge). There are ways to get extended service patches up to 2022 though, but it takes a bit of effort to do so. Antivirus + up to date browser + common sense is a valid substitute (for now). I still use Windows 7 daily on my Latitude E6410 for school, though I have 2FA turned on with all accounts on that laptop, and I don't login to accounts that I don't have 2FA for.

Set up your applications the way that you want them, then install deep freeze. Once deep freeze is install and set up, then you can just save any important documents such as office, music, etc. to remove all media such as flash drive or external hard drive. Another suggestion is run your windows XP in a virtual machine and keep a snapshot of the ready

I would really love to keep using XP, but with 3rd party software makers no longer making their updated software compatible with XP, I am forced to upgrade. I went to Windows 7 after a new game could not run on XP. Firefox and Chrome stopped their updates, meaning that more recent web sites might have issues displaying properly. Many more software no longer run on XP, which limits the usefulness of the OS.

On the other hand, many programs won't run on modern versions of Windows. I have a Windows XP computer that I use to play games like Lego Loco or Pinball. A recommendation I have is to turn off internet connection whenever you're not using it. When you're offline, malicious software can only be installed with flash drives, CDs or similar things, but being careful with those should be easy.
@adventuresinnostalgia
@adventuresinnostalgia 5 ай бұрын
That's a great point about disconnecting from the internet for extra security. Disabling Autorun can also help prevent malware from automatically running from external drives. But wouldn't malware creators eventually find ways to exploit other vulnerabilities besides the internet connection? Have you seen any recommendations on other offline security measures for Windows XP?

Nice video! I wonder if disabling the internet access but retaining the LAN is a more secure way than worrying about AV & firewall robustness. I guess it all comes down to what you want to use the machine for. In my case I'd want to use it as a time capsule; so with all the old unpatched productivity software and games of that period. That way a LAN where I can access shares but nothing else might be the most secure way and still allow me to easily pull files from the web. One thing you didn't mention is if imaging the drive (with something like Macrium) is possible? That would be worth doing.
@233kosta
@233kosta Жыл бұрын
If you airgap the network correctly, there's no harm in leaving it plugged in. I'd even go as far as to make sure none of the other nodes connect to the internet at all, or if they can - make damn sure they're secure. Disabling internet connectivity within the OS will do precisely nothing to mitigate the abundance of security holes that exist within the operating system itself. The only real way to keep it safe is to make sure that whatever network it touches doesn't go anywhere near the internet. Firewalled or otherwise.

If you really want to run XP on modern hardware, a potential strategy could be to install a lightweight Linux distro to be the host, install Virtualbox, and setup an XP virtual machine, then have it run when the desktop environment starts. XP security is not particularly a problem for experienced users. The BIG problem (you didn't mention) is almost all new software now tests for operating system type and immediately comes up with "wrong windows version" if you try to install it on XP, even if the software will work fine. A system hack is required to change the XP to windows 7 in the test so software will install. This still can present problems with software that actually will fail under XP.

For an XP browser security is only the starting point, the last 10 years of browser code changes is probably not supported. You end up with pages who's scripting, etc fails or is formatted in an unreadable way because things the software behind the page is is trying to do is unsupported.

If you do have an old PC that doesn't have the requirements to run Windows 10 then your better off installing a lightweight version of Linux. I think Ubuntu has a light version. This will allow you to run updated software and you will have decent security. And it's far less hassle then installing tons of different software and yet still praying that something hasn't crawled into your system some how. Although some people have there reasons to continue using windows XP whether that be nostalgia or a business or something.

Is this the reason that many sites are now "insecure" when using xp?
@jagmarc

@@danatmonst3594 in the years since microsoft stopped updating XP, the majority of websites one by one stopped serving TLSv1.0 and lesser encryption such as SSLv3 which XP SP3 uses. These websites now serve TLSv1.2 and TLSv1.3 instead which normal XP can't access. Because many cashpoint ATMs still use XP, support was needed for TLS v1.1 and v1.2 and micrsoft then issued a manual update through its KB process. The manual update process is published around the net and involves manually adding some registry keys and a DLL file or something. When a site delivers content via SSL3 / TLSv1.0 (for compatibility to unmodified XP) a message appears saying "insecure".

Very bad idea to use it as your main. Simply installing programs and using modern registry hacks doesn't make it any more secure than the modern Windows. If XP was secure by simply installing programs and tweaking things, Microsoft wouldn't keep making new versions of Windows and publish updates.

Edit: I just remembered that there is this weird Chinese browser called "Extreme Chrome 360" or "Extreme Explorer 360" that's apparently based on Chromium 78 of something and that's it natively runs on XP and Vista. Given that it's Chinese, it's most definitely spying on you, but there is a Russian repack of it that claims to have gotten rid of the data collection, it's on the last software compatible with Vista list on MSFN.

So we could only find max out at 2 Gigs per card giving us 4 gigs of ram. The windows 10 operating system requires a minimum of 2 gigs so that allowed a the rest to run our programs. Right now we are sitting at about 75% memory usage doing regular work. We have been going along fine since then but when the time comes for windows 11 we will need new hardware as the units are maxed out and 11 requires a different chip operation.

Easier said than done. However since the source for xp has been leaked and verified to compile. We may have other opportunities that were not avaliable in the past. As a thought that might appeal to some retro fans might be to create a sort of windows 98 from the xp source including elements from another open source microsoft research project called singlarity which has elements very similar to the qubes os this could mitigate rhe need of some of the direcrion xp took in the final product idea while making an inherently more secure os. Just an idea tho.. Where the nature of having the source codes to the original ideas may produce something completely different but what the original ideas should have been to start with.

I am using XP for some ancient software I can't live without. My solution is to never go on the Internet and have XP on a virtual machine installed. All new software is downloaded and virus checked by the hosting operating system. This method has several benefits. I can use it on any system and can hop it over to another system without changes. A compromised system can be recovered. I don't need a firewall or an antivirus. I can work on two systems on the same hardware in the same moment. I can use Outlook Express, if I really need to, by using a special network connection on a Linux firewall, which allows only email traffic. I can continue to use old software without the back-draws of compatibility or license issues. On modern computers there is no speed loss compared to the original XP hardware systems.

I know machine for tools that have Windows XP or Windows 7. Windows starts first, then the CNC system is started and takes over full screen. Fortunately, Windows runs in a restricted user account, Windows settings are not saved. Programs cannot be installed. To change something you have to call the service. An update to a newer operating system is not possible for the user. If something goes wrong, service has to come. Then the hard drive is formatted or replaced. Then a new image is copied. Then you start again from the beginning, but the CNC files (text files) are gone.
