How to safely use Windows 7 in the future? Either in a restricted virtual machine with no network access, or on an old machine with no ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. Although really, I'd argue that's the safest way to use *any* Windows OS.

Don't use operating systems that are no longer supported on a network-connected machine. No amount of antivirus will save you when the OS inevitably has a security vulnerability in itself. Just connecting a Windows 7 computer to internet in 2020's is considered a compromised system. I've been entertaining thoughts of installing Windows 7 on a machine that is only connected to internet through a physical firewall, a separate device that is up to date and won't let anything through the physical wire unless it's specifically listed as trusted. But even that raises suspicion. Trust me, if you don't know how to set up a network, DNS and a linux server running a public service in that network then you don't know how to make an unsupported OS usable. If you do know how to do those things, then you also know how much it's not worth the hassle.

Im trying to go for a normal windows xp installation without having to burn discs and use 3rd party programs, but i know i am going to run into an issue with using a sata HDD to install xp on. I’ll be using brand new (unopened) pc hardware made from around 2011-2013. The cpu and gpu is compatible with windows xp. Im hoping i can get by using ONLY the driver discs that come with the components, even if theyre outdated. The motherboard I’ll be using doesn’t even have any drivers for it anymore on the manufacturer’s (Intel) website, so the disc it comes with is my only hope. Is there a way i can make this work? I heard i could go into the bios and switch to IDE mode for all the sata drives before installing windows xp

Non-PCIe adapters work. I have no idea what is going on here. The hardest thing using Win7 today are drivers. It costs me days to find proper drivers for all parts. Especially my radeon, the latest one that worked was some intermediate release from 2018. There is plenty of new hardware that only supports Win10+. Win Update was also not that good for drivers back then and we don't know how long the update servers will be available for Win7. It's better to have everything offline.

Windows 10 you might be able to stay on this time and I am really considering it if I pop back over from Linux to use it I am NOT upgrading to Windows 11 so far Steam still works anyone reading this take advantage while you can it's too early for me to make a switch to Linux but I do have it in mind if Microsoft keeps destroying Windows and making it worse.
