I bought a $915 wine and a $12 wine and I swapped the price. Would a master be deceived by fake price tags?

It depends a bit on your market but there are really good, inexpensive wines. Although inexpensive is also relative, I would say there simply is no great wine for 2 Euros, but there are very good ones for about 10-15. At least here in Europe there is a massive quality increase when you from 5, to 10, to 15 Euro (as long as you look for good deals)

@@Kenzo_____ I've studied wine tasting for a few years as a subject in school and even if I'm neither good or interested in wine tasting I don't understand the perspective of many comments here... Do people choose their wine basing on the price, like: more expensive = better...? Don't you simply choose a wine by its fame and known characteristics and then decide whether to buy it or not, given the price is not too high? And about the speculation part, it shouldn't work with wine, I know the Italian system which requires a wine to have certain characteristics and land, production phases, storage, cultural references... prerequisites in order to gain the right to write the thing on the label that certifies it. There are authorities in place that get rid of frauds and it's about the same in every country nowadays, so if someone buys a very expensive bad wine just because it's expensive then it's their fault for having the critical capabilities of a drunk cat.

The true experts seem to feel much less need to prove their knowledge and their snobbishness to someone asking genuine questions, showing interest, and trying to learn.

From watching many WineKing videos, Peter seems to appreciate what he calls "real wine", even if it's not super expensive. I can't agree, here in France (and living next to Cahors, another fine wine making place) wine is tradition because it's part of our teroir. It's part of our culture in the campaign to appreciate a good wine, some good meat, good bread etc.. My father can tell you from which castle the wine is from by tasting it 95% of the time. I can't do that, but i can definitely tell a cheap / average wine from a good wine. Not sure if I could tell a very good wine from a great wine tho. Also note, that price doesn't do everything in the lower brackets : We have really good wines for 8 to 15€ but also some very average wines for 30 - 40€ which aren't worth the money, so it may be tricky sometimes. As the old man said in the video, sometimes the producer fails to deliver the product he wanted to make.

While vintage is important, its worth mentioning that older wines typically need to sit out longer than younger ones after being poured. From my experience, older wines will tend to have a funky barn yard taste to them when tasting it right after it’s been poured. Letting it sit (or breathe) for 15-20 mins (sometimes 30 mins -1 hour) will allow it to transform revealing the true taste/personality of the wine. Im no wine expert by any stretch of the imagination. This was a tip given to me by a sommelier and my mind was completely blown when he showed me the difference between the initial taste and the taste 30 mins after pouring a 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon; it honestly felt like I was drinking two completely different wines.

I really like the character of your mentor. What a man! Also, I really liked how happy and appreciative he was of the budget wine and wanted to cellar it, even with the mega expensive bottle right besides it. That's such a good quality. I'm very partial to finding good out of little wherever possible. Especially when it's for leisure and experience. An exciting and flavorful life needn't bankrupt a regular Joe. There's so much wonderful stuff to enjoy at any level if you dig deep.

A true master isn't swayed by public opinion. He got the answers, but is so confident in his acquired skill and knowledge over the years, that he still doubled down on his own answer, seeing through the bluff, and never second guessing himself! This is pure motivation to want to become really great at something.

I never really liked wine, and was a skeptic. Then, for dad's birthday, since he loves wine, I decided to get him a more expensive bottle. We live in Croatia, so I got him a good local wine. Cheap bottles here can go for as little as 4-5$. This one was around 30$. When we tried it together, I felt like the old guy in the video. Sublime. Nirvana. This is it. I get what wine is about now. Later I found the wine I bought has won numerous awards, and the British royal family has a stash of it. I think they even served it at one of their weddings. Made sense

Taking what the old man said, that to increase quality by half a point means doubling the price of the wine, he was pretty close to guessing the quality of the expensive wine (since doubling the price would mean it’s 100x’s more expensive). What I’m guessing is he thought the cheaper wine cost a bit more than it did. So maybe he thought it was a $17-20 bottle.

bravo to the wine expert... especially for being patient when he was supposed to be tricked... i thought i read somewhere that wine quality above $20 was all the same?
@thomasrad52023 жыл бұрын
I think the $20 rule is good advice for most people since the expert mentioned there are diminishing returns as you go up in price. He said something like a 1/2 point increase in quality can be double the price. So if your $20 wine is a 7/10 then your $40 wine might only be a 7.5/10. In which case you may have been better of settling for the cheaper one.
@7evive3 жыл бұрын
Thats not true. There definetly a point of diminishing returns when you go above 30-40$ but up until 70-80$ there's still something to be had. Above 100$ is just about names, AOC and exclusivity and prestige.
@yohannessulistyo40253 жыл бұрын
A $10-$15 Chilean Carmenere or Argentinian Malbec are already very great in my opinion. I don't feel like I need anything else. A decent Spanish Tempranillo or Italian Chianti Classico or Primitivo (Zinfandel in US), a very good Napa Valley Carbernet Sauvignon, are probably all you need to pair with your weekend special meals like your BBQ, steak, or special pasta dish. Then, moving upwards is $40 like my favourite Brunello di Montalcino. It is simply heaven, and was my rare experience in having "delicate" tasting-wine. Is it worth the price? Maybe yes, especially if you only open it during special occassion, like your birthday, your anniversary, celebrating your loved one's special days, promotion day, your favourite sports team winning something, or similar rare occassion. You want to splurge a bit more, pair it with prosciutto or fancy cheese to spoil your palate. I'd say keep several bottles in your cellar to be opened during your special moments. In this price range, there are trendy wines that made critics go "ga-ga" about, like the infamous Beaujolais, which I tried once or twice. It is indeed good, but I just don't get what's the deal. Generally, just stick to what you think is great, and watch out for general reviews. Then we get to $80 such as the venerable Barolo. It is "unique" in a way that the wine is rather light and have a very distinct cherry note (the gaudy fruity aroma), and not as abbrassive (or "tannic") as normally wine should be. The consistency and the texture is indeed amazing, definitely doesn't taste like somebody forgot to stir the powder or syrup and giving the drinker weird and different taste in every sip. Was it worth it though? I can't say it is my type of wine, so no. There are plenty of super expensive wine with this characteristics, which I call "glorified flavoured water", and I have to say that I am not into it. Anything "Pinot Noir", which is arguably one of the fanciest grape, simply does not fit my palate. But it is often highly prized or praised, alluding to the Wine Master's explanation about what makes a wine special: Pinot Noir is just too damn difficult to grow and the yield isn't that much. The world's most expensive wine, Domaine Romanee-Conti (DRC) is made of Pinot Noir, and can command price above $5,000. The tasting note includes rare hint of umami-ness (savoury) to the tune of mushroom-like, which very unusual for the water-like consistency of typical cheap pinot noir. However, the right $20 Merlot wine will give you all the delicate savoury note, and sometimes a bonus like the herbal tobacco, clove, or nutmeg-like sweetness aroma. Cheap Australian or New Zealand wines will often add that signature tea tree or Eucalyptus smell if you are into that sort of thing. I would say you have to treat any wine in this price range as "experience" or "education". Finally, how about the $120 wines like the Tignanello (apparently Meghan Markle's favourite) itself? Along with my other $150-$200 wine experiences, including the rare chance to taste $1,000 wines, I must say they are indeed not for everybody's financial condition, let alone palate. I mean, yeah they are indeed very "good" in their own way, but if I like orange juice, I might not be able to appreciate a very good apple juice. Red wines, especially Carbernet Sauvignon has the distinct tannic and oak wood smell when you swallow it. The better the wine, the more mellow and easier to swallow. It makes you feel like you are in an old library full of leather-covered books. The older or the more expensive the wine, the stronger the smell, giving the sense that the library is filled with more books. However, the right $20 Malbec or Syrah wine will give you more or less the same super heavy leathery-smell too. So, in the end, it really depends on what you are looking for. Now, this oaky wine is my kind of taste, but I'd rather save up for GeForce RTX3080 instead of blowing it for something that will turn into piss water in less than a day. Clearly, it requires some significant financial commitment, and normal people would not be comfortable in splurging this much amount of money, unless you are a hobbyist or wine enthusiast. Like car enthusiasts, they tend to "build" instead of buying directly from the dealerships. Newly rich loves to buy supercars to announce their newly acquired status to the world, because they really feel the need to, and this is the kind of car that ranges from eye-watering $100,000 like the Lambo Huracan or Porsche 911 Turbo, all the way to $1 million super car territories like the McLaren P1, LaFerrari, or Porsche 918 Spyder. Real rich people stays within their sustainable means, and aim for safety and comfort in $60,000 Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7-series. Car enthusiasts are often more selective, they either buy classics like 1967 Ford Mustang or heavily tuned project car, even if they buy super cars, they tend to have specific car characteristics that they aim for. I think wine hobby is kind of the same. There are a lot of casual people hearing amazing stuff about expensive wine just like what normies hear about super cars, so they tend to get into those once they have the money, without knowing the pitfalls. Unless people have some self-esteem problem or other serious mental health issues, I normally don't advise them to spend too much on prestige.
