Who would have thought 40 years ago... what a great little production with wonderful graphics/video! I'm in the process now of making a dummy out of a white oak log. My brother made his out of willow and said drilling the holes was a challenge so I'm sure white Oak will be one even more so.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the videos you posted and the quality and instructional videos very good high quality stuff I wanted to post a pic of my wooden dummie but don't see how to do it yet, made mostly the plans that you put out and the ideas that I got from you except for the MDF board we followed everything else instead of MDF I use 2x10's out of pine was definitely harder than probably the MDF but all came out real good I was very fortunate to have a friend who has all the equipment I needed and a lot of experience using them turned out good maybe later I can put it on my KZfaq channel and others can see what I made thanks again

This is definitely the best tutorial on KZfaq! I'm working on a dummy myself using these plans. I made a jig to mount on the body to assist in cutting the criss crossed arm holes. I cut a piece of wood 11" long, or whatever the width of the body may be, for the dummy in this video it would be 9". Then I cut the pieces into long triangles that go from 0"-2". Next set the depth of your circular saw blade to 2". Screw the jigs on either side of the 2" notch where the arms will be and start ripping away with the circ saw. Clean out the notch with a chisel. Now unscrew the jigs and mount on the other arm hole notch and repeat. I hope this helps!

Heavenly, When you drill the holes for the arms, you drill from one side half way, then you take the drill out, and you go to the other side and drill in to meet the hole in the middle. With the arms, you dont need a lath, just a lot of sanding will make the arms rounded. Have fun building.

you could use a reciprocating saw to cut the angle holes, but if you screw up, you're in trouble cause power saws cuts too quickly and are not accurate. you can also cut triangles out of wood, the same angles as the angle cut that you are making, then mount them over the cut area and use it as a jig. As well tilt the dummy so that the angle becomes level, then use the circular saw to cut while using the triangles as a jig to rest on.

Would it be okay if the Pine isn't Treated. Thinking about making the whole Dummy out of it. Coz i finally found a place (South Australia PalletCo) thats got Trunk & wood for arms & legs. But its alittle Damp. Do u think It'll be okay? Would be really Thankfull for any Advise from u. Cheers

Yes, i am 5'6". in my next video, you'll see the stand. You put more wood in the box of the stand to make it higher.

TABLE LEGS was a very clever idea. I'm building my Wing Chun Dummy out of a solid dead oak tree that is still rooted in the ground. It's perfectly straight-standing and it's diameter is just right. I removed the bark and at the point of making the holes and creating the Arms & Legs. I'll sand it (120, 200 Grit) and seal it. If I ever move; I'll just cut it at the base. Thanks!

Byodawg, Sure , you can use the logs to make your dummy. You just have to do a lot of drilling for all the arm holes. The only thing is that logs always crack along the grain of the wood over time. In China, that is how they made them using logs.

Can i use Pine Wood coz the only trunk i can find is from a Pallet building place. Plus what Laminate/Glue do u use to keep sides together? Also the wood is a bit damp/wet... does this mean i will have to wait for it to completely dry before any work or painting. I would be Very Thankfull for any Tips & Advise anyone could give me. how many pieces of mdf did u use? what r the sizes, then u repeated the process and glued together after your arm etc cuts.

I just round out the arms by eye using the electric planner , then belt sander, then sand paper by hand.

Nice guide. Only issue I see is that the two upper arm holes are touching each other. Never seen that on any dummy I have trained with. So I would suggest you offset the second hole so they are not intersecting. Will make it stronger as there will be some wood in between the holes. Otherwise nice guide.

Hi if you want the legs to be slanted instead of straight do you know the measurements of the back and the front. I mean how far does the holes should be from the base front and back?

I do not understand your question, but if your arms are 12" long, the top 2 arms should be 9" apart measuring from the center tip of the arm to the other.

Can you tell me how much side play is désirable at the bottom of the leg (foot)? You said approx 1-1/4 in. Sideplay for the arm but I am wandering for the leg?

What's the angle f the am holes?

I traced my own leg on to paper, placed it on half the dummy before i glued it together. knowing the dummy's position when its standing up, then transfer that paper leg to the dummy. From my other dummy that i bought, i know that the tip of the foot is 15" from the trunk of the dummy, and the chin is 13" from the trunk and the foot hangs 2" lower than the base of the dummy.

On the top 2 arms where they criss cross I’m thinking of leaving a 1/4 in. gap. It looks too close, the wood might crack. Have you had this problem Tommy?

Just curious about the upper square arm holes. In some diagrams they are 1.5 inches. Does it make a difference? Your diagram shows the square holes as 2 inches by two inches. What are the upper offset arms in inches for the upper arms when the square holes are two inches?

Why is the front side hole for the single lower arm wider than the front side holes for the upper arms?

I want my wooden dummy to be a stand alone. I’m 5 10 so I obviously need a taller body. So do the dimensions for the arms and leg remain the same from the head down ? I’m assuming I make up the inches on the lower part of the body

I have not made one this way yet. I made mine out of a solid piece of cedar wood 28in around and chiseled out the holes. The angle of the holes have to be exact or the dummy will be of no use. Your technique will be off. I will be doing it this way next. I would put a piece of flat Metel at the top end to prevent from cutting any off the top.
