Wing Chun Power seems effortless to the observer - So how is it done?
In a Seminar containing gems for beginners to advanced students alike, Sifu Nima King explores the Wing Chun concept of effortless power and what makes the Chu Shong Tin style of Wing Chun so particularly special - even recounting the simple principle Ip Man repeated to CST as a student!!
The founder of 'Mindful Wing Chun' covers how power emanates from internal aspects such Balance VS Gravity, and explains how these combine with the 'rising' concepts of "TAI GONG" & "SENG" thru the spine to produce the "effortless" power associated with high level Wing Chun, and the difference between that and "Chi".

Got to give Nima credit for uprooting himself from Sydney and travelling to Hong Kong and finding a place to live and a job etc, to support his passion for Chu Shong Tin's interpretation of Wing Chun- took a lot of courage and dedication. And GM Chu Shong Tin is a true master in every sense due to his humility and gentle nature ... and of course his skill. However, to make this work (ignoring what external force is coming to you and being applied to you), you need to get your training partner to throw HARD punches and KICKs toward you with NO padding- you need to constantly take\diffuse these blows in oder to practice the "tai gong" - I can tell you when you've been kicked and hit HARD in the face and legs - it is virtually impossible to maintain this internal structure. Its ok to practice this when the threat is minor but to make it work "in the street" and especially against other systems you need to practice against constant HARD and dedicated attacks. Otherwise this is all blah, blah heresay.. Train well.

Yup, it's not easy to keep the same level of relaxation in sparring but it's not impossible. Even by keeping a fraction of it, you are still able to move more efficiently. Efficiency is not on or off and there are levels to it.

Do you practice Wing Chun? the way to defend against a punch coming down the center is to close the distance as you cover the Centerline. Timing and agility is key though as a person who can throw a proper jab does it without telegraphing. It's crucial to cover the Centerline and to continue the offense too as a job is usually just a set up for the next movement I.e. a second more powerful strike or a take down.

4:09 Are you able to experience the nim lik on your own or still not there? How was GM CST able to reach that level so early in his training?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 25 күн бұрын
Yes, now I can feel ot while practicing the forms. I think CST was got it so fast because of a few reasons: 1. His body/posture was already very open with very little imbalances, which is rare for an adult 2 . He was physically weak, so he couldn't rely on brute force 3. He had so much time and nothing else to do during those early years and practiced close to 8hrs every day, with very little distractions 4. He was living with Ip Man so there was total immersion in the art 5. He was a gentle natured and humble person so that would have helped keep his ego in check with training with others and therefore he was able to keep relaxation rather than trying to win 6. He was very interested in finding out what Ip Man meant when he said the aim of Siu Nim Tao is 'Lop Nim' - to cultivate an idea. So his approach to Siu Nim Tao was to delve deep into the mind/body

@@MindfulWingChunreally helps when you know what to feel for, or just have great instructions to follow. It's almost something you can't actually "feel" yourself doing, but others certainly will feel it. This may be kinda cliche but it truly almost feels like effortless "nothing". Yet your body is moving

@@MindfulWingChun it takes a lot of dedication to actually develop before you will ever achieve it as well. And most just don't have that kind of patience/open mindedness. A whole lot of practice that alot of people will have no interest in doing

Nima - when you say you need to be upright, then in a real fight, how would you be able to bend your back and forward or are you you stuck in this upright position for it to work? Secondly, when you discuss the anus, in truth are you actually training and using the psoas muscle? Thanks!!
@levonpogosian5722
@levonpogosian5722 25 күн бұрын
Imo, The uprightness is some sort of flow flowing from the base of the spine going all the way up. When you bend the spine imagine the flow continues to go up but in a curved way with the movement of the spine. However in the early training stages you stay upright externally to help and cultivate the inner uprightneds. There isn't a muscle training such as that which might be compared to muscles training. However when you mentaly hold the anus area you can feel there is some releasing activity in the muscles until the hold is properly established then you only feel the hold there and not the muscles that were releasing because they are already relaxed and "off".

Yeah the uprightness is the easiest postion to get into the state. Once that is felt and understood then it's aboit retaining the state in all different positions and postures and scenarios. For example in Biu Gee's last move, the spine is fully flexed and we are totally bend forward but the open condition in the spine and torso is retained.

@@PianoMusicToHealAndSleepTo other than his first 2 students and a few in the police force at the time who treated him and caring for him more than his own offsprins, , Ip Man rarely engaged wholeheartedly in imparting knowledge of wc. Chu, in his own confession in numerous interviews , disclosed the fact that most of his Q&A opportunities with Ip never got much indepth much "A". He was left to "figure things out" on his own.

@user-im9xq7fp5r
@user-im9xq7fp5r 25 күн бұрын
@@levonpogosian5722 he didn't figured it out, just that he thought he did. Body structure is of course a key component in wc as in any internal style in the world of Chinese Martial arts. However, the true syllabus and journey of wc training is to progressing understanding of structure knowledge of wc throughout the 3 forms not just the 1st form. All 3 forms encapsulate evolving structures with first being the incipient stage of self discovery only. To help you understand. let s stray from martial arts a bit, in a game of capturing 3 flags to win, Chu spend his lifetime , BARELY, capturing one ! Your notion of " nothing wrong with figuring out himself ", needs to compare to the very same syllabus Ip Man used when he was seriously, wholeheartedly teaching. They resemble nothing as those of Chu's. I m in my 70s now, have had a chance to see the whole spectrum of wc, and by stringent comparison, Chu had missed the mark and THE BOAT.

@@user-im9xq7fp5r why don't you post some videos of your forms or go to Hong Kong CST'S lineage school so we can see your high mastery in the art ?? Because besides showing disrespect towards a grandmaster who could demonstrate the applications of all the forms of ving tsun you don't do much and repeat yourself. Indeed he delved deeper into the first form but that doesn't mean he didn't have mastery over the other forms.
