A very interesting review, I have never liked the "hooded" nib style, but these work very well, the piston variant is obviously going to be the better system, relying on a rubber bladder to work for very long is not a good idea, probably why they have progressed on to the piston, which also works more efficiently. My 601A just came today. Fine Nib. The one with the Nib that kind of wraps around. It is really scratchy and I’m gonna get one of my double edge razor blades to widen the tines a bit

Great video you should try the Hero 343 areometric pen it reminds me of a Parker 51 they run around 4-5 $ per pen with little bit of art on the pen too.

Could you do a swap experiment? Swap the old filling mechanism for the new one.

I pulled out a spare 601 piston pump filler today that I was going to grease up and give to a friend to try. While I was servicing it, I took some callipers and measured the filler nut, and noticed 2 things: 1) it’s 5.2mm rather annoyingly; and 2) Of course I could just use the callipers themselves to unscrew the nut.

Thank you for taking the time, and setting up the shots to really show how these work. The filling systems are new to me, and fascinating. I wonder if TWSBI got the idea of the spring for their GO model from this draw filler. The demonstrators aren’t that attractive by usual standards, but they’d be a neat gift for someone who’s into steampunk.

I’ve got a couple of these with Bobby custom nibs, which aren’t as fine and suit me much better. Great pens, especially for the price!

As the ink reservoir in the piston filler obviously isn’t isolated from the heat of your hand, and does not seem to give you the option to reduce its total volume as ink level drops, you would expect a burp tendency at a certain point. Is that something you have noticed after using it for a while?

Awesome vid about a veeryyy interesting pair of pens. Does the draw filler come with replacement o-rings? Are they user replaceable? I would like to see that filling system on other pen syles... All of the Wing Sung 601 pens come with a piston vacumatic filling system. Also, the plastic jewel on the new models glow in the dark slightly lol. But, I think it's a great pen for the price. Would recommend to a beginner.

I think the subject of new, significant Chinese pens with hooded nibs will be quiet for a while (unless some new PenBBS hits the surface?), so it's a good moment to ask this question, and it seems like there's no better person to ask it to: how does user experience, feel and materials used compare between these Chinese hooded nib pens? There's Hero 100 on the expensive (-ish) side, Wing Sung 601s, 618, 613 in the middle and, say lower end in other manufacturers, plenty of options like plastic Hero 616 or metal Jinhao 911 (I mean at least barrel and connector are metal). I own few 616s and hooded variants of Lanbitou 3059 and Jinhao 599 - almost all came with some issues but most of these writes nicely now, so I wonder if there's enough of a step-up in terms of reliability or, say, ruggedness, to make it reasonable to replace it with anything newer, fancier or with more metal used for construction. Don't know if somebody mentinoed since but the drops of ink sometimes in the demonstrators are caused by silicon getting in touch with the ink. When they mix, the ink gets some properties of the silicon grease and looks like oil dropplets in water. When the inside of the demonstrator's body is cleaned well along with the bottom and the lower side of the piston seal, it shouldn't happen again. I just noticed that with my WS3008.

Wingsung launched brand new limited edition of Wingsung 601, with 14K gold nib and silver cap(92.5%), only 601 pens was produced. I don‘t know if there is any left, but I got one, it's pretty nice. It costs rmb368, nearly 53 us dollar with free shipment to China.

I was going to film a review of the Parker Vacuumatic this week. Seeing this video made me wonder if there were any demonstrators back on the market. There were. And two new pens (instead of one) are on their way to me. I blame you... Meanwhile, I need to pick a new pen to review this week. I'll save the Parker until I have this to show the mechanism.

I wonder if this could be the same mechanism as Pilot's Con-70 converter. I saw the small syringe-like part has air hole behind the white plunger, so it first creates positive pressure with the rubber stopper blocking the tank(also pushed by the positive pressure generated by the plunger)while air comes out through the syringe in the middle. as the plunger's getting pulled, it created negative pressure that allows ink to get sucked in. the tricky part with it is that the pen has to be as vertical as possible so the rubber stopper can block the ink in tank from flowing back through the feed. the Con-70N has a weight on the rubber plunger, supposedly to give better chance of it to actually work. Even though I can read Japanese, sadly the Japanese manual of Con-70 itself does not mention the right way to use the converter, needing to be upright, and operated with gusto like you did in this video to the Wingsung

My 601 (which is the piston type) came with a tubular plastic wrench to remove the piston in addition to the lubricant dispenser. Also, the body is black WITHOUT an ink window...

To update the video a bit: At this point, the pump filler is in transparent, translucent blue, solid deep blue, dark blue with sparkles, and black with and without ink windows. Afaik, the new black is the only piston filler, where you can't see the level. They're generally called with _New_ in the name. And important thing is that there was a translation mistake and the blue colours are called green. So if you're interested in the solid blue piston you need to look up _'Wing Sung 601 new green'_ and the one with sparkles is _'shining'_ as was in cas of the 618s. Regarding prices, the old models are now at about $13 and the new ones at $15. It looks like the black piston pens are very new because I found them only at one seller. So either it's not actually a piston or they're still making new colour variants, which would be very nice.

2:11 chamfer, not camphor. one is an angled cut, the other is a waxy solid that smells.

Unfortunately that silver cap isn't doing it for me! I don't think silver caps like those belong on a demonstrator. Definitely an interesting pen with some unique filling systems!

I like the little Dollar piston filler from Pakistan. I have one with a wide ink window and a wonderful stub nib £1.75 new.

Either the colour reproduction on the video/my phone is dodgy or whoever named that ink "crimson" should be checked for colour blindness. It's purple-black.
