My first impressions of the Wing Sung 601, a Vacumatic (spring-loaded piston) fountain pen. This is the Blue-Green resin with the ink window.
Pen: I bought mine here: amzn.to/305g88o
Ink: Liberty's Elysium is availabe at Goulet Pens.
You can also find this pen on eBay: ebay.to/2W8E6yq

I have a number of 601 models. All well made. I prefer the pump filler over the vacumatic with ink window,. I have extra filling mechanisms for both, easy to replace. I do like Wing Sun's hooded nibs. Some of my daily writers are 618s & 601s. Nice to uncap & write, all the time. Consistent smooth writers.

The pump filler is a real clever evolution of the valuation, and it removes the inevitable and messy point of failure, so great improvement.

I have picked up some 601 and 601A models from time to time but they tend to find new homes as I become more and more enthused about the Parker 51. However, my Wing Sung 618 has never left me, because it "feels" better and it writes every time, no matter how long the interval between use.

Well i have the 601 MK 1from 2018 i believe, the first version of 601 that they make, with a rubber diaphragm filling system and i also have the 601 MK 2 updated with a piston plunger filling system ( with ink window and without lnk window ) and the 601 MK 3 the double jewel version like the one you have ( with ink window and without lnk window ) and i must say they all are very reliable and a consistent good writer and they don't have drying out issues not even after a few weeks of been unused !

You've convinced me to buy this pen James. Like yourself, I've been humming and harring about getting it for a month or two. I've been suprised with Wing Sung pens on many occasions. I find their nibs are either buttery smooth or abysmal. Considering they're cheap, I tend to use my clingy inks in those pens, like Liberty Elysium.

Why is that reducing burp-risk? I would assume that a full fill would burp less than a less than full fill? I hope this isn’t a stupid question. I am only continously fascinated by all the physical processes involved in the function of a fountain pen. And I hate ink burping!

the 601A is my favorite pen. I only have cheap pens; wing sung 698, 3013, 699, 3008 and some jinhaos so I'm no authority but the 601A writes the best of all of them, no issues whatsoever. I've used Iroshizuku, Diamine, Birmingham, and Noodler's inks with all.

I had a mk2 601 I unfortunately dropped on tile floor and broke and then got the mk3, only difference is the 💎 at each end, the mk2 had a round bottom. Both are burgundy which matches perfectly with diamine oxblood. I love them. I might get the steel version in the future as the plastic, whilst good, probably shouldn't be tossed around town. I'm a lefty and the 601, as well as the original 51, are the only pens I've had a good experience. The parker 45 clone, moonman 80, feels better built but the nib sucks for me. If I had the money I'd buy one of each color with an ink window. They're worth the money.

Hi James. My first pen was my dad's gold Parker 51 which has a gold stub nib... At the time it did a lot of milage but now I find the pen is on the slim side for me, I like chunky pens...this pen is really interesting though, I really like the filler system...if I bought one I would marry it up to a colour or a colour family, like say, blue, and all varients of blue. I love Nathan Tardifs creations, he's a maestro... The Goulet Elysium blue ink is beautiful, if anyone would like a big example of it, if you watch Brian's presentations the office walls are Elysium blue I'm very sure of that...Noodlers inks are LOADED with dyes and you can easily dilute them... Do a small sample first if you want to try this...OK 👍. I like this WingSung and I'm tempted...but as I said, its bit too thin and it makes my hand ache... But it looks a good one...hmmm maybe I'll get my grandson one,,, the filler system would be helpful to him. Best wishes to everyone...mind how you go. Rubedo. 💜

Great review brother! Thank you very much. I was on the fence to get one of these, but you've just pushed me over. LOL! As far as Noodler's Baystate Blue goes, most pens that I've put in don't like it. The most common problem is clogging. Definitely no good for my Lamys. But it worked well with my Jinhao X450s, & X750s with vigilant maintenance. It flowed the best through a no-name handmade Chinese pen with an obvious Schmidt nib, but the nib would dry-out too readily. Like barely 36 hours. Well that's my 2 cents. Thanks again, & God speed.

Yes, it is a picky ink. But looks great. If the pen flows with a juicy line, and is easy to clean, then it is OK. I put it in Indian eyedropper that is easy to clean.

Coming back to this video. I still own my 2nd 601, the blue finial on both ends model as the one on the video but in burgundy. Just bought the older model as I've found it to be better balanced and better looking than the new one. Will probably slowly buy the entire color selection of the older model and matching inks. Diamine Oxblood perfectly matches the burgundy colored body. Diamine Majestic Blue matches the blue finials.

@@JG3Reviews have you tried the bent nibs for it? I've heard a lot of good things, it's smoother at the cost of some extra line width but lacks the toothiness common with the stock one, I'm left handed so I feel it every time I write. My 51 is well worn and medium but it glides like no other. I bought a set of bent nibs, the smaller size as there are two available, along with the 601. Can't wait. Do you know where to buy just the butt of the body? I'm thinking of converting mine into the older model. The weight and sharpness of the end is enough to annoy me but I don't want to let the pen go to waste in the back of the drawer.

I have several of these in both nib configurations (though the blind caps on mine don't have the metallic end piece). The tubular nib feels finer than the hooded variant. Zero flex but I don't really mind that. I prefer the hooded version but the tubular one, apparently a homage to Sheaffer, is pretty reliable and stable too.

@@JG3Reviews it makes an interesting addition to my collection and is fairly cheap. If I had to choose then I'd go with the fully hooded one. I've also heard tales about the tubular one including difficulty replacing it if you spring the tines, so I'm a bit wary of pushing the pen too far.

I think that the term "jewel" is just the traditional term for the plastic caps on the ends of the pen. The Esterbrook J series had black plastic "jewels" as well. Never heard them called anything else. I do agree that the 6xxx series of the Wing Sung pens seems to be a step above the 3xxx series. I have a (kind of hard to find in the US) 6100 that I use daily, because it's such a nice writer. Still with the Parker vibe, a closer match for the 61 (hence the model number?), but metal construction and the "arrow" is more of a Star Trek swoosh. 😁

1:24 Parker never left any equipment in China. They sent representatives to China to see if the Chinese could produce product to Parker standards (implied: using Chinese raw materials and tooling). And it wasn't the 51, it was the 45. Parker let this particular deal die on the vine, so there is only the most tenuous of connections between the two companies. Considering that you referred to the article (frankunderwater.com/2017/02/20/remaking-parker-45-a-cooperation-between-hero-parker/) . . . well, at least you got "Parker" and "Hero" right.

I heard the other details elsewhere, as additional info, some in previous comments from others here as well. From what I've seen, a constant in all this is that there is conflicting information. Yes, the 45 is also among them, as comes up in discussions of the Moonman 80.
