My brother bought this album in 66... I was 16 at the time. I played this album so much I wore the grooves out of it. We had a Japanese exchange student that came to my school in 1967. Somehow the Ventures came up....he said he was at the live show and could prove it. On the back of the cover was some shots of the crowd and low and behold he is in the pic. He was wearing a very distinct striped sweater in the shot...a few days later he showed up at school with the exact same sweater.

The Ventures performed maybe the greatest TV theme song ever, in "Hawaii 5-0".

Nokie Edwards was an awesome guitarist.Very underrated as he was never included (as far as I know) in any top guitarist polls but definitely should have. He worked with a lot of big names in the business. He recently passed away. RIP Nokie.

I just read the sad news Don Wilson, the last original and founding member of The Ventures, has died today. He was 88 You and your fellow band mates where one of the best instrumentalist's rock bands of all time. Rest in Peace Don Wilson February 10, 1933, January 22, 2022, Thanks for the music.

The Ventures are hands down one of the most important Rock n Roll bands of all time. They one upped every other surf band musically. They made so many great records. They were tops and still stand the test of time.

Absolutely perfect syncopated single stroke roll. Very difficult to master to this level. Note his tradition grip on his sticks. Fantastic. Thank you for giving credit where credits due!

Great video as always! I saw the Ventures on this very tour in 1966 on the island of Okinawa as a 17 years old. My father was in the US Air Force and we were stationed on Okinawa. It was an absolutely awesome show and the Ventures were outside the theater just prior to the show to meet and greet the fans. I played guitar in a rock band and we played everything the Ventures ever recorded. I was blown away by Nokie Edwards' solo on Wipe Out and learned it note for note. Got a lot of compliments on my playing based on being able to play that solo just like the record. Thanks for keeping these guys alive for new listeners who have never heard of them.

Nokie won many awards in country music and helped play with Buck Owen's and other country greats. He helped create a unique style of guitar playing.

Awesome Fil! Really enjoyed this video. The 1960s was such an incredible decade...the music was so pure, raw, emotional, and (of course) groovy.

Wonderful performance. Mel Taylor proves yet again that a great drummer can get a wide variety of fantastic tones out of a kit of basically any size. You don't need thirty toms and two dozen cymbals to get massive tone from the drums.

Your appreciation and musical knowledge of your subjects is very enjoyable to see and hear. I taught myself the drum kit listening to The Ventures' Walk Don't Run album, about 55 years ago with my home-whittled drumsticks, and whacking on the seat cushion of one of my mother's old kitchen chairs. My brother was 9 years older than me. He had this on 45. I would sneak into his room and play it over and over. 'Walk Don't Run" as well. Best fun I ever had. My son who I named after my brother is a high school music teacher. I'm Blessed.

“Walk Don’t Run” was a must-learn tune for all of us who were learning guitar in the very early 1960’s. A jazz instrumental from the 50’s, The Ventures turned it into a rock and roll “guitar lesson” song for rookie guitarists.

I always loved this tune, we played the Walk Don't Run '64 version & covered a couple of others off the Mel Taylor solo lp.

Two of the greatest drummers ever were associated with Surf Music. Mel Taylor, played for The Ventures. Keith Moon, probably WISHED he could play for the Ventures. Apparently Surf was his favourite music.

Great to see this generation of musicians showing the Ventures some love.

The amazing thing about Mel's drumming is: he does a lot with just a 4 piece drum set with one crash/ride cymbal and hi hat cymbals. I would like to see today's drummers do the same with a 4 piece set. Of course, the guitar playing and bass playing is just top notch.

They *seem* to blur together, but, I slowed it to 75%...and...the *details* really jumped out at me. It's amazing how complex their playing actually is and how synchronized they are at that frantic pace !!!!! And, we can always thank his Mom for . . . . *the* *_Ventures_*_ _*_!!!_*

Mel Taylor was the house drummer at The Palomino which was a Country Western music club in Southern California. Bob and Don saw him play drums at The Palomino and saw his talent and asked him to join the band.

I have seen the Ventures play live many times and a few times at the Palomino in North Hollywood. I met Nokie when he played at Joe’s Bar and Grill with Deke Dickerson’s band in Burbank before he passed. I learned to play guitar from the Ventures in the 1960’s when I was a kid in Southern California. I was happy they were elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Ventures could play just about any kind of music and make it sound great. Not only a surf band. Many thought the band retired for a long time. The fact is, they never stopped playing. From 1959-2004, they had made over 250 albums and produced their own signature guitar series.

A Wipe Out video with Max Weinberg guesting with the Ventures was great to watch . Two drummers beat for beat using 2 different styles.

My first band formed in 1966, and at that time, whatever your repertoire, EVERY band with a half-decent drummer did Wipeout - it really was all but mandatory. If you had a decent guitarist (and especially if you were a little weak in the vocals dept.), you'd have Walk Don't Run, Pipeline and maybe a few other Ventures tunes like Apache or Perfidia on your playlist as well. The Ventures didn't have that many singles hits, but their albums were such a rich source of instrumental material for so many amateur bands, no other band really compares. I owned one Ventures album, I think it even had a track or two recorded live in Japan. In the course of multiple moves and communal houses it somehow got lost. Damn. Thanks for covering them, I really didn't know any of their history, or even their names.

I've still got a few of their albums. Pipeline was the first one of theirs that I learned how to play. It's amazing how many songs use the same chord progression.

They were the reason I first picked up a guitar, in the early 1960s. I had forgotten how SUPERB they were, and what a MONSTER their drummer was. They were so far ahead of everyone on the guitar at the time, in terms of techniques, tone and precision. Utterly incredible. Starting at 00:01:39, they turn, and it's like hearing a chorus of street-singers - so aware of each other, and what fit and what didn't. I fear they will be forgotten - but I seldom hear them anymore. Nokie (and the guitar player who played the theme song from Bonanza) were my heroes first up.

As kids when wipe out came on it was a hit... We kids played the opening drum solo on car hood's. .. Every kid gave a solo wipe out... Girls too... Dancing... Right on the street corner under the street lights... A harp or two... Fun time's

Mel Taylor is a beast. I doubt any modern drummer could do what he did with a simple 5 piece drum kit.

You ought to turn these little chat/analysis videos into a weekly TV program. Have a word with the BBC or ITV. Hell of a lot better than a lot of the crappy programs that are currently on, in some cases 100 times better.

Well that was fun. There's a Japanese band called "M" Ventures that recreated this very concert. Clothing, amp's, guitars and drums all the same. It's good clean fun as well. Check em' out.

Fil realizes he's in the presence of greatness. He can't help but chuckle as Nokie tears it up on lead guitar. These guys could outplay everyone in their day. House Of The Rising Sun is a better guitar selection form this concert. They launched a thousand bands. I love The Shadows, but The Ventures never fail to get the party swinging!

I watched a Nokie interview about not using "gauged" strings, but strings from a banjo. He said while in Japan in 66, someone broke into his dressing room and took 2 sets of strings. (A guy from Japan wrote Nokie a letter and admitted all this to him.) The guy said he then took the strings Nokie used to Yamaha. And the rest is history.

The Ventures (through their records) taught me how to play guitar. Walk Don't Run, Pipeline, Apache, etc... Good stuff.

I always click the like button before you even start the video cause I know it's going to be epic. I can totally relate to the "only clean" tones these guys had to work with, as I started playing in bars and parties in 1961 before there was any OD of any kind. You had to rock it faster sometimes to up the profile. The first 'fuzztone' made a real difference live. Thanks for all your great efforts to put this stuff in perspective for the youngsters. Very cool group. I believe my brother took up playing guitar because of them. He never joined a band but still plays now into his 70s. He even makes guitars! I love the Ventures too, especially their Christmas album.

Nice to hear a young musician with such a great knowledge of the Ventures. I am a senior citizen, lifelong musician and guitarist. The Ventures were among my first influences, along with James Burton who around that time was the guitar player for Ricky Nelson ! And then my guitar teacher introduced me to people like Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, ,, Kenny Burrell and so on. The jazz greats etc. And of course it was nice that Johnny Smith got a few bucks in royalties after the Ventures recorded walk don’t run!

I still remember that riff from when I was a kid. The song is memorable to me because one time a band that really didn't know the song played at the bar... some really hot redhead would get everything shakin when the drum solos came in... the band kept going and going with the song and drum solos. I couldn't blame the guys, that gal had it all goin on. I forget her name now, I went to high school with her.

There is a video of these guys playing this song live and accompanying their drummer on stage is a young Max Weinberg (E Street Band). The two drummers were having a sort of play off on the drum solos. The band is bit older than this video but it’s a really nice live performance video. You should check it out👍

Simply the best arrangements you could find back then . They were really big with the Echo Chamber , Reverb and Tremelo Surf Music . Mel Taylor was as good as they get and Nokie had a distinct way he played that set him apart from most others .
