Winke Day 5: Corn vs Milo, The Deer Voted

Bill heads to a corn food plot that has been getting hammered by the deer...and racoons. He discusses how the deer feed on corn compared to milo during different times of the season, and has high hopes the deer will starting hitting the sorghum by late season.

Milo is a good food source when it gets fully mature. It provides better cover for the deer and other wildlife as well like pheasant. Here in South Dakota we plant a lot more milo for food plots than corn.

Can't wait to see how the Milo works. Got that tip from your spring vid and another buddy of mine so I planted it (very late-Aug8), but mine is starting to get seed heads right now. Another great vlog, thanks Bill!

Hopefully you don't get an early frost. I do think it takes the deer time to figure milo out if they have not seen it before. -Bill

That sucks hope he’s alright ik Last year I had a picture of a buckfawn with a cyst it was right between the front legs I think because of a corn stock or stick sucks but things do happen hope the hunts go well I’m the days to come bless you thanks for the amazing videos

I used to hunt a farm that always had milo never had much luck with deer. But they would harvest it probably when it was more palatable for them.

I have hunted milo in the past in areas where the deer were used to it and they hammered it, wiped it out. It will be interesting to see at what stage of the fall/winter they move in on this field. -Bill

Midwest Whitetail Daily I found out there was some mixed in with a bird seed that I put out as a supplement for the deer, started growing voluntary in one of my swampier areas.

Here in Ohio when it’s warm like that the deer usually don’t eat the corn since it’s a carbohydrate and heats them up.

For sure they hit it harder when it is cold, the colder it is, the more they like corn. -Bill

I’m very curious how the Milo works. What a perfect scenario if they won’t touch it until it gets a head. Hopefully they like it.

I think that once they get used to it being here they will start to eat it when the seed first forms, that was back in early September. That has been my experience on other farms with milo/sorghum. They didn't do that here because it is something new on this farm and it will take them time to figure it out. -Bill

Bill, we've always had major issues with Blackbirds eating up the milo... Did you notice anything like that on your milo plot?

I'll also say that the milo plots were directly next to and between major wetland areas. Nothing in the hills.

The wetlands would attract the red-winged blackbirds for sure. I haven't seen signs of anything eating it yet, birds or deer, but as I have said, if you plant it often, the deer and everything else will figure it out and will soon be hitting it harder than they do the first year. -Bill
