Is Corn overrated as a deer food plot? Should you plant sorghum or"Milo" for those big bucks next hunting season? I planted both and show and share my results. I manage the 2 farms I hunt for big bucks and numbers of deer and I had a clear winner!
As requested I’m now doing onsite whitetail land management. I’d love to take a look at your property and help to take down your biggest buck!

Thanks for the milo update and how the deer were using it as cover in open ag areas. An added bonus is it provides cover for pheasants for a late season bird hunt after deer season and good winter cover for them as well.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I’ve heard the pheasants like using it as well. The birds and deer need as much habitat as possible by me. A lot of fence lines and good wildlife habitat getting converted to AG. I imagine that’s why the pheasant population has been declining so much in Wisconsin over the years!

I've planted Milo on 4 separate occasions. The deer usually smash most the seed heads before full maturity about 2 weeks before season opens. That said the plots were only about an acre and with pretty high deer density it was expected. I love the stuff. It I don't know what it is about Milo but more important than the food it just seems like deer love bedding in it and moving around in there. The cool thing is it's the perfect height where deer will move all day in it but you can actually see them unlike a corn field

I was really surprised how much they loved bedding in it! I walked through after being tagged out and found trails and beds everywhere! I won’t be planting the white as the deer definitely prefer the red sorghum by me. I heard there is a red grain sorghum that hits 5 feet! I’m going to try and get my hands on that for the 2024 season!

Great video man. I might actually try a strip of this on a plot. I only have small plots. 1/2 acre, but it may serve a good purpose like you said as a screen and late food source. 👊🏻🦌

I was really surprised how many more deer I had using my farm with the Milo. I didn’t even mention the money I saved and not worrying about buying a planter and big equipment with corn. Definitely worth a shot if you’re looking for more cover as well! Good luck!

I have been planting sorghum in NE PA for the last few years with great success. Deer crush the corn as soon as it comes up, but they don't seem to be attracted to young sorghum, so it gets to maturity in mid October. Sorghum will continue to be a big part of my food plots, as turkeys will also pick up the seeds. The root system also adds to better organic matter. I've used Northwoods Whitetails Soil Builder, which includes sorghum and that has also been successful in my soil. Great video! Thank you for sharing.

It’s all gone by rifle season. We don’t have mature oaks the for clover, chicory plots.

Sorry, I meant to say, without mature oaks the sorghum provides a source of carbohydrates within the mix of clover and chicory

Nate, thanks for the update...a great job. We are definitely going to plant some Sorghum next year. You mentioned planting in June, is that your best recommendation for have a food source to bow hunt near in Oct and Nov.. Thanks and keep up the good work. Bob SWWI

Nate..I have had a lot better luck using switchgrass for screening and stopped using Egyptian Wheat and other screening choices. Another benefit is the SG is done once and there is little or no maintaince once it is established.

Look at the maturity date of the Milo you purchase to plan accordingly. I planted mine the end of June and seeded out in October which was about perfect for that pre rut! Good luck and thanks again!

Great Videos, really been enjoying your channel Nate, you can relate to a lot of people including myself. I have 11.3 acres and between myself, wife, and kids, we’ve taken some great bucks on our small property doing a lot of similar setups, and I’ve been looking for something better than corn, I’ve been trying to research different companies that offers and sells sorghum, where or who did you get your sorghum seed?
@Natesbowhunting

I got the grain sorghum from Arrow Seed. Pretty good priced and they carry a lot of different seed. Glad you enjoyed the video thanks for the feedback! What state are you located in? Sounds like you figured it out👍

@@Natesbowhunting thanks Nate, I am in Michigan, I didn’t start shooting my biggest bucks until I got and started setting up my own property, my property is usually really good from beginning of season until about thanksgiving, once thanksgiving comes around the buck sightings drop off, a lot of it I believe is lack of screening on my edges, like yourself I focus on my access and leave a lot of my property alone during the season and I won’t shoot any Does until around Thanksgiving and I don’t just shoot any Doe, I also try to be selective on how many deer, Does, and Bucks We Shoot. I also think the sorghum can be great for food, bedding cover and that late season draw because of how many carbohydrates are In sorghum like corn. I’ve also been trying to experiment with different blends of food plots like this year I did Oats, Winter Rye, Soy Beans, Tillage Radishes, and Rape. The soy beans didn’t make it because I think the deer just destroyed them before they could mature, but everything else came up great and still holding and providing for the deer, but if I could add sorghum next to that like a side by side, could be a big game changer

@@brandonmangrum5824 You are right up north from me! Definitely give grain sorghum a try! I’ll be planting another 4 acres this season! I love soybeans as well and have enough AG around they can reach maturity. Good luck this season!

Can you share what milo you planted and where you got it? There is a tone of different variety out there. I would like to get what you have with the lighter stalk. The wildlife sorghum is nice but has a heavy stalk like corn.

Indeed there are a lot to choose from. I’ve tried 3 varieties of Milo. By far the red grain sorghum that gets around 4 foot tall has been my #1! I go through elk mound seed. Good luck🏹🦌www.elkmoundseed.com/monsterbuck/grain-sorghum-seed-a-k-a-red-milo/

@Natesbowhunting
@Natesbowhunting 7 ай бұрын
It’s possible I did spread a little heavy. It did come up great and got about 10 foot tall! The snow and I’m sure wind knocked it down. It gets blasted by a North and West Wind right there. Lasted me through November so I’m pretty happy with it. I’ll probably plant some spruce trees for more cover and permanent screen to the farm next year👍

HD screen stalks look a little thin. Possibly planted to thick, or not enough nutrients. Hard to say. Ours is still up here in the UP. We are getting a liquid fertilizer for the screen this year to help. Get ahold of us and see what you think. We didn’t Milo up here but not until July (too late). It grew well but seed heads were small. Definitely an alternative to corn.
