While it hasn’t even been a full year since we last examined the all-A220 fleet of airBaltic, our recent interview with the airline’s CEO, Martin Gauss, revealed a lot about the state of the Latvian carrier. Since our last video about the airline’s fleet, we’ve seen the addition of another five A220-300s, pushing the number of jets from 34 to 39. The airline is expecting more jets in the near future and so we can’t expect this number to be accurate by the time you see this.
The carrier is certainly happy with the type, despite the supply chain issues its engines are now encountering. With these challenges, as well as a few exciting announcements, let’s spend today’s video examining the airBaltic fleet in 2023!

A modern aircraft with large windows and comfortable seats? Free high-speed internet? Reasonably priced high quality meals? Now that's amazing! The only other thing they need to add are usb charger ports and im sold!

Looks like a cosy aircraft on the inside and the lack of screens on the seat backs isn't an issue if you can choose your own entertainment on your laptop, tablet or phone once the WiFi gets set up.

Still chapped that the C series had to go to Airbus, and that Bombardier was strong armed into giving up the jet program by Boeing being whiny with the US gov. It would have been great to see a strong third player in the market.

Can confirm that I have flown the A220 with airBaltic. It's a great aircraft. Spacious, quiet and comfy. Although I do question the choice to get rid of the Q400NG. In my opinion, it's a better option on shorter, skinnier flights, like Riga to Palanga, Riga to Turku or Tampere to Copenhagen. Also could act as a backup for the A220 when they are unavailable.

I had my first ever flight from Vilnius to Riga and then from Riga to London Gatwick Airport with airBaltic's A220. I had an economy class ticket but still it was such an amazing experience! I honestly love this airliner even if it has issues. Just waiting for free high-speed internet to come.

airBaltic wet leased aircraft from others, but also wet lease to others. YL-CSD has been leased to SAS, and is currently operating for SWISS. I don't know the timeline, but if they are both leasing out and in at the same time, that doesn't seem like a good idea.

There five planes currently leased to Swiss. Those are rotating. And from time to time, returning to their home base. So therefore today it is a plane mention it by you, but tomorrow it is totally different aircraft.

wet leasing is contract based, some contracts were made during covide, and you have to fullfill your contracts. thats why they are both leasing to others and leasing themselves

This family of engines from P&W have been very problematic for years. The long turnaround times is a direct result of that - they can't make spares fast enough and the engines need more frequent overhaul.

@serkandevel7828

As said in the video, that's a supply-chain issue. Airbus (or Boeing if they instead had bought the CSeries) can't do much about this as engine manufacturers are seperate from planemakers. Manufacturers sometimes supply their engines both to Airbus and Boeing so both can be equally affected. Boeing once even had to cannibalize engines from stored planes to produce newer ones as engine deliveries were delayed. Though the CSeries/a220 hadn't been grounded too much compared to the max. Good that Boeing's legal effort to kill this Canadian plane model failed

The planes are modern but the seats are rock hard and they have the worst customer experience and customer service in Europe. Their carry on limits are designed to catch people out and if you are unfortunate to use them with an airline that allows 10kg Air Baltic will gleefully refuse your hand luggage on their planes and fine you for being so stupid as to have had the misfortune to be booked on Air Baltic. Some airlines are cheap and nasty but Air Baltic is nasty and expensive and fines you for "mistakes" when you fly with them. Duty free is banned unless it is in your 8kg allowance and God knows how airports let them fly there if they directly attack their shops in this way. Avoid this airline at all costs.

What are you talking about, they don't check the bags at all XD, I flew from from Keflavik, Iceland to Riga and back with my Bag being 11 kg, plus I bought 8 bears in the airport in Keflavik and took them on the plane they didn't ask s***. The costumer services is always a fit or miss for all airlines, I once got so mad at finnair service, cause they rebooked my flight and they didn't know why XD.

I flow Airbaltic (code BT) several times a year both by business and personal reasons. First: have you read about all the options and rules fine prints? If you don't, then is your fault. The BT operation mode is to do as most as possible via internet. For example it is explicitly warned that if you do not have any boarding pass and request one at the counter you have to pay extra. The same for Bus companies like Ecoline or Lux express I never has seen an Ecoline employee except the bus drivers and the on board stewardess. BT offer a basic ticket with a 8 kg backpack only luggage + laptop bag. But, if you need to load more you can upgrade to a 12 Kg backpack. In case you do plan in advance a big duty free shopping, simply upgrade to 12 kilos, go to the airport with a partially full backpack and stuff all your shopping into it. What part of customer service are you talking? it is possible, at least if you live in Riga and use RIX, that the first human interaction you have in your trip is at the security check. You can book your flight, print/download your boarding pass, weight, tag and deposit your luggage in a self service counter and pay for the VIP lane in security all via internet. In that case, no BT employee will see your hand luggage until the boarding procedure. And the people doing the RIX boarding checking are airport employees. I have not seen a scale at the gates. But I have send a lot of passengers with more than one hand luggage and not a single one had boarding problems. The cabin staff is very good, practically all speaks several languages, and in some shared routes (as to Spain) they try to have a crew member of the partner company speaking the local language. And on board you have a select and pay food service but also you can preorder full meals (of excellent quality). About the seats: I have flown long distance in different companies, including Tokio-Paris in AirFrance, and I normally use a neck pillow as a seat cushion because of the seat (just for record, I do NOT have hemorrhoids!). I have flown several times to Madrid which is one of the longest BT flights and never had the need to use it, In fact since the 220 is in operation I never take it with me. So I fully disagree with your seat opinion. About the McDonald's usb charger ports on board idea: The idea is nice!, even the new trolley/bus in Riga have a few ports now (and several long distance bus companies has 220V on each seat too). But that will add more cabling, weight and maybe the planes will have to be re-certified, and the additional weight will lower the plane "green" efficiency. If Herr Gauss or a BTI PR employee are reading this, maybe they could add the option of pre-ordering or onboard selling/renting fully charged power packs (with the Airbaltic logo of course) in case you forgot to fully charge you devices and take your power pack.
