I finally got around to making this work again. It's still buggy, but at least it's running again! It's currently running on a Raspberry Pi 3B.
Original video out about this: • Retro Winnipeg Weather...
Example of the original channel that this emulates: • Winnipeg - Environment...
Live KZfaq stream of recreation: • Winnipeg, MB - LIVE We...

Absolutely loving these videos. I only stumbled upon it by accident, but you have me hooked. I have wanted to do similar for some time, and pipe 60's, 70's and 80's music videos around the house. Loooove this content.

Nice setup you got there! I even like your recreation of the Environment Canada Weather station too. It reminds me of Weatherscan here in the U.S. which unfortunately is shutting down soon. You did an awesome job recreating it.

Fantastic! I saw the new Winnipeg weather channel on KZfaq; didn’t know who created it. Have you thought about making one for the old Winnipeg Road Conditions channel or airline departure channels? Or do you remember “Genesis Storytime” it was another one of those graphics channels in Winnipeg too from back in the day. I’m from Winnipeg too (Garden City area). All these old text channels like this weather channel were made using a teletext system called “Telidon” which has an interesting history on its own. It has a very distinct look. Can I get the code to run a local instance of the weather channel on an extra Pi I have lying around?

There used to be so many of those text channels! I'm not sure I have the motivation to create another channel with my buggy code though. Anyway, a month late - here's the link to the github: github.com/probnot/wpg-weatherchan

Great update! Always good to see your channel setup considering how inspirational it was to me. Loving the updates to the weather channel. There's a part of me that wants to grab another SD card and revamp how my background-music-and-videos channel works so I can give it a Now Playing OSD and a news ticker or something but for now I'm content with how things are. One day, probably only if I win the lottery, I want to get a Thor Modulator that can take up to 16 sources from HDMI and convert them to analog NTSC. Not that I would want to do 16 channels exactly more it'd be nice not to have to worry about whether the 40-year-old tech we've built our systems on will explode some day!

I like the idea of the "now playing" OSD. I was toying around with that for the music videos channel, but never got it to work right. I was a weird kid who went through a phase where I was obsessed with cable TV channel lineups, and right now I'm living that awkward 10 year old's dream lol

Works great on the Original Pi Zero! Even added a composite out and a selection of Yanni for maximum nostalgia.

Funny I was just wondering if you'd put anything like this out recently or not, seems you have! Thanks for the link to my accurate recreation livestream :) I remember Edmonton being a pain for having no conditions for whatever reason, I think I had to change which station I got the report from in the end

Awesome rig! I would love to make a Raspberry PI analog channel filled with 90s cartoons, but I only have one CRT TV, so that would be kinda pointless. If I do acquire more CRT TVs on the other hand...😉

There is a tv guide emulator that you can set up too. It's called prevue guide emulator. It's pretty cool and you can edit custom channels

Looks great. I’ll have to see your changes and update mine for the US ones.

Is your code available somewhere? I'd love to learn how you implemented US weather data to add some US cities to mine.

Interesting. I would really love to do something similar to this, but redoing the old Prevue Channel guide. I've been using Linux for a long time now, and am comfortable with C and perl, but I have absolutely no idea how graphics works in Linux, particularly if you're not interested in having a full X Windows environment. There are just SO.. MANY.. libraries and kernel framebuffer things and toolkits that I don't really know where to start. It seems SDL might be one entry point...

Are you able to infinitely daisy chain those channel plus units together?
@probnotstech
@probnotstech Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, no. I've been able to daisy chain a max of two of them. Here's a diagram of how I have it set up - two branches (daisy chains) that combine at the end with a combiner. i.imgur.com/m23Ybl6.jpg
