In this video I will be taking part in the 48hr Winter Survival and Bushcraft challenge organised by Joe O'Leary from Wilderness Survival Skills, using only a basic kit consisting of belt knife, pocket saw, fire steel, cooking pot, cup and a wool blanket. I build a natural shelter, a raised bed, fire reflector, pot hanger and a table using only the resources found in the woods. I then go on to make fire, filter and purify water, forage for some wild edible food, prepare game to eat and cook over my fire. This was an amazing experience for me and a chance to put some of the skills I've learned over the years to the test. I really hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!!

I do miss being in the outdoors and wild camping so much. This C19 lockdown is restricting us all socially and mentally. Content such as this keeps us all motivated and interested ! One of my favourite episodes was doing a winter survival / bushcraft course a few years ago, that my kids bought for me for my 50th. It was at a private estate near Oxfordshire somewhere. The food was really planned out well also ... we had fin, (trout) feather (pigeon) and fur (rabbit) over the 3 days / 4 nights, with loads of group instruction under the parachute (communal) canopy. We had our "food" harvested beforehand and stored in a cooler box by the gamekeeper. These offerings were issued to us each day with guidance on how to inspect, prep and cook each item. Also raw meat safety and hygiene considerations were introduced and followed. Even experienced folk would enjoy doing some of these programmes. Though mine have not been as challenging or strict as yours. Thanks again. Si

Terrific video... the challenge is made even more challenging by the fact that you're filming the whole thing! I know I often take for granted watching stuff like this the amount of work that goes into lugging your camera around, setting up shots, retrieving gear, etc., all while performing the tasks we're watching you perform -- kudos!

Warm, dry, well fed on a cold, rainy weekend in the woods, without a tarp or tent, it doesn’t get better. New phrases for me, “head torch” and “chucking it down”... I gathered the meaning, but just think, “head torch”, you have to admit it sounds a bit funny to someone who’s never heard it. And “chucking it down”, referring to how hard it’s raining makes more sense. Well done Simon. Thanks for sharing. Texas

Another amazing video Simon well done you. Two years ago for my 50th, my wife bought me a ticket to Ray Mears winter expedition to Finland. This was hands down the best trip I’ve ever been on! The coldest temperature we experienced was -37° C and the coldest sleeping out temperature was -28° C. My first campout was in the snow grave I had to dig and that temperature was only -17. I had a decent sleeping bag, a decent sleeping mat on top of two reindeer skins. I did have a tarp over the top in case we had more snow during the evening. We also built a Quinsey to sleep in which was tiring but great fun. The warmest night was in a hot tent where the three of us took shifts to keep the fire going. A once in a lifetime experience 👍👍👍👍

Noticed you modified the bail on your zebra pot , mine are original, I have 2 sizes of self reliance pots , with a round wire bail . I'm disabled now , if I can't go on my 4x4 4wheeler or 4door 4x4 pickup. I dont go anymore. Back when I was younger, I'd hunt in all weather, learned to build a evergreen wind , rain break from cedar and pines here , if I wasnt near a hunting cabin or line shack, always carried a good axe or large hatchet, and yes I always just burnt the wood in half , if too long , I never tore down a built shelter , because I might need it again or someone else might . Here in the states I carried most times a ruger semiautomatic pistol in 22 long rifle. Or a 22 magnum carbine . Always carried the big kitchen matches in waterproof tins . Carried carbide lamps for hunting, wasnt a problem getting a fire started even in rain , it's a shame I can't teach my son the old ways .

Impressive bit of work! I congratulate you for doing such an nice job. Enjoyed your video; thank you.Some years ago I had to do a 1night when we were hunting and over extended ourselves and ran out of daylight. One of our group was seventy something and he got cold and his legs gave out so I said "I guess we're home for the night" put up a shelter and a good long log fire and luckily we had some sardines and lots of tea, a little sugar and a few other things and did a good night in spite of pouring rain, single digit Celsius temperatures and a gale blowing. We were just clearing camp in the morning when search and rescue arrived, but their comment was "you guys did everything right! You're the kind of "victim" we like to find and it was a good exercise. Today with GPS and cell phones it wouldn't have happened, but it was one of the best outdoor experiences I've had. We're in Maritimes/Canada.

Thanks Frank! That was some experience - you did well - survived in style despite the conditions!! That’s the real test isn’t it, when you are forced into a very real situation where your wellbeing and even your life is at stake, pulling experience, knowledge and your wit together to get through - and in relative comfort!! Even with modern electronic devices, you still need those skills - it’s sadly all to often that folk go off into the mountains etc without even a map or basic emergency kit, relying on GPS and their phone - only to find that the cold has shot the GPS batteries and they have no phone signal!! Thanks for the story Frank, I shall remember it! Atb, Simon.

The water source was meant to be fuller than it was - it was an artificial pond, but leaked. To be honest, it’s real to the sort of circumstance you might find yourself in, the objective was to make the most of what we had and source what we needed from what we could find around us. The water situation was unfortunate, but we managed. 👍💦

Thanks for your response, Simon. When I was a kid the chore often fell on me, despite my elder brothers. Plucking birds. I had chickens, pigeons, pheasants, whatever, and I hated it, feathers everywhere. Then someone told me to put the bird in a bucket and pour boiling water over it, that made it a lot easier. Finally someone showed me how to skin a bird, voila, no feathers!

Our Credentials- Advanced State Of the Art Psychotherapy.Advanced Health Tactics Incl CTM and Ayrurveda.Protectection Of Victims Of The Establ.The MH Hosp Whose Clients And Staff Came To Us For Help Admitted Causing Deaths.We Decided To Explore The Physical Health World After I Got No Help From System,It Took Me 8 yrs To Self Diagnose.It Was almost too Late.Random Notes. .This Is Not About The UK Or World Virus But We Will State This- When I Asked Our Advisor About All The Abuse We Were Obliged To Endure Indflicted By The public And Establ The Reponse Was This- "If They Did Not Do That You Would Be Powerless. Also Everything They Do Is Worse For Them Not You Also something Will Happen Which Will Give You Payback So all You Have To do is Sit And Watch It Happen". (I Did Not Believe That)That I Had A Virus Since 2019 On top Of The 7 Yrs Illness I Endured Despite No Help..The Issues We Describe Existed Prior To The World Virus and Are being Maintained. That Virus Has Not Made One Scrap Of Difference To The Wrong Doing..No Apology Has Been Received.The Scandle Includes The Refusal to To Respond By Among Others M Hancock As a West Suffolk HM MP and As a Human Being At His Cottage In Fornham Suffolk (Where Cover ups Are Going On Re Suicides Etc) Re Me being Left To Die By The Medical Establ And Issues Even More Serious Than That. No Hospital Mngt Has Ever Responded In UK.. You Will Find Below Some Holistic Thinking Which Is Every Bit As Important As a Man Who Enjoys Roughing It For A few Days. As usual for most of the films being presented on the net, at first everything seems true and factual but, after seeing about five episodes we start thinking and, gaps start apopearing in the sequences. This person "a bloke in a wood" seems congruent,is a good communicator and is compent at what he appears to do. We have,ourselves done slightly similar things. Here are our comments about what we see as the unexplained.- You will not be able to eat quantities of Woodruffe as part of a diet because its a mild poisen and has medicinal qualities. Look up cleavers too. The meat he is consuming wont survive any warm weather for that about three days without refrig. The pheasant he is shown plucking needs a lot more preparation than that shown. When we did some of that activity I became extremely ill and had to summon help, how would this man get that on "an island" somewhere in Norfolk. There was no indication of a mobile phone. We reckon this film is not some bloke roughin it and taking a few pictures. The effort has been intensly edited and gives the impression of professional media skills not just a carpenter, joiner out for a few days. For instance the impression was given of him being all alone wirth a dog yet someone was walking alongside him filming him whilst walking about also he was filmed from the shore paddling a canoe and so on. We note his careful covering of any signs of a camp fire and other measues taken to "preserve the environmrent". however we have just discovered deception taking place within the establ re planning anf environment issues. We refer to build construction taking place in rural areas which flaunt the regulations. We have been sent bogus paperwork by Local Govt which aims to circumvent the regulations. Some of that paperwork has had names inked out.The firm who is supposed to inspect the build work is paid by the developer and refuses to confirm the legality of the build work. The Local Govt Dept wont communicate directly but gets a Patsy to send the bogus papers.. They have now cut off comms completely. The Lab Party HM MP in the area Bristol where the Govt Build Inspectorate Office is was told to act and sent back a pre printed mail which proves he never read what we have sent him. He is of course yet another "lawyer".We then asked the Govt Inspectorate at Bristol to act. That Dept under the wing of Dept Of Communities which is supervised by the ex Chrities Art auctions "lawyer" Minister Genrick HM MP Newark. We looked around Genricks Constituency areea Notts and have found deception going on at Notts Uni. Police Commission. Local Govt. HM Courts.Media and other HM MPs. As usual the whole thing proipped up by the Sport.Art.Drama.Hobby crazy public and media.None of these Depts or individuals will respond. Genricks office includes the character Mr Pickles who never ever replies to any information sent incl that of us being told this by Local Govt- " If Theres Anything Wrong with Local Govt The Public Must Go Get Themselves A Lawyer". and "We dont Have ideas Put Into Our Heads By The Public". Instead of replying re the evidence sent to him Pickles photo appeared in national press accompanying that was huge article about the price of his biscuits and his body weight. The evidence now includes anomalies going on within 24 Local Govt Orgs.

PART TWO.The man whose survival film we are commenting on announces he lives in Norfollk, he does not seem to have any accent. We already are well aware of deception going on within the East Anglia Press and Media and the Police HQ Wymondham and at the County Council which is run by ex Haringey Council executive. It was that area of London (Haringey) we investigated re the cover up in the Mental Health (MH) system which now is indicted re about 30.000 avoid deaths over period 35 yrs. The Local govt boss in this area also hails from Haringey and wont responde re any issue whatsoever incl electoral and tax and wellfare. Eight Social Services staff wont respond despite my lying here fot 7 yrs screaming in agony every nite. I got no competent help. All of the wrong doing we have discovered is fully supported by the Local Press system. We were told this by that system- "Nothing That you Have Discovered Can Ever By Put Into Print". The Police have told us that none of the evidence must be read by public. They have used violence to attempt to stop this disclosure they are encouraged by HM Religion which is behind the MH scandle.. The HM Court system offered to kill us. Norfolk also connected with Mr Lamb liberal Party at n- Walsham. No reply from him or anyone in that area. The Lib Party is also implicated re the MH scandle and behind all that is the BBC and Clegg. The Party destroys legal documents. The BBC said- "Hide The Evidence Abroad".Lets get back to the survival hobbist Simon. Apparently loads people write to him fom all over the place and even send money too. How can that be, we have sent wellk over 1000 mails re spending.avoid deaths. violent attacks on ourselves.health electoral.environment. victims at their last gasp and so on and theres no replies. F-book and Twitter destroy mails and accoiunts and Yahoo was caught blocking mail. We now know that 26 HM MPs are using evasion and deception. The one in this area is an ex Primary School Teacher who was employed by the Local Govt who are doing the cover ups re Planning and Environmement. She states this- "This Area is a Wonderful Place To Live".Theres been 1000s suicides here. Railtrack is implicated and wont respond.We wrote to the local HM MP 6 months ago and she wrote this in reply- "I Have Given Your Text to Me Team". Her photo apears on a Parish Council site. No one in that area will respond about anything.No reply was ever recd from 50 Parish Councils.. That HM MPS area is involved with the HM religion that the Police said "Want You Silenced". It is funded by private enterise round here.And so on. Kent? Largest Law Uni in Europe.They wont wont communicate re the death threats have recd from Cent London Courts or the anomalies within the HM bar Council and CPS etc. 30pp Fax sent to the Court System in this area has not benn responded to by dialogue. All a HM MP is obliged to do for you is send a "reply". That can be three words typed by an employee whose full identity is not revealed. Or worse than that, the reply will comprise a pre printed handout telling you how wonderful the HM MP is but no reference to what you have sent because the lawyers have told the HM MP not to write But meanwhile what you sent will be used for self gain by them. Mecanwhile we get Police attacks for saving lives and ten people two miles away get funded by Lottery Board. for "Watching Movies" By the way, what does Simon and the Dog use as a toilet. Most dogs we know go around marking their territory but not this one. We say this- The total obsession with Hobbies and Charities and the formation of 1000s mal funded affinity groups wont reform the decline in the UK and Europe.It was the same situation in 1933 Germany. The EEC Brussels say this- "Nothing Can Be done To Stop Corruptn As The EEC Is Only Interested In Money Not People" The BBC said-"Hide The Evidence Abroad". We have another question for Simon and that is who are the huge group of about 50 people depicted during your film. Our other question is this- We here because of suppression and attacks live in poverty and work 7 days a week 52 weeks a year. Despite that we find time to expose what we know and have the courage to demand justice.

Looks like a nice course. Aside from building a palace I'll give you an A-. Smaller shelter uses less material, goes up quicker and is easier to heat, and conceal if that is an issue. Aside from that you did well. :) My last "survival course" was in the jungle in the Philippines, on my way to Vietnam. Excellent native instructors, they couldn't run to a store and slap down a charge card. So they lived and worked in the jungle and made just about everything they used. Knives and machetes were made from salvaged car leaf springs. Goggles were a combination of bamboo, strips of inner tube and salvaged glass. Very interesting course, and fortunately LOTS of bamboo. Lumbers answer to duct tape, you can do just about anything with a stand of bamboo. Cheers!

Thanks David, glad you enjoyed it! It was a great experience for me, a real test of what I’d learnt put into practice in a controlled situation. The woodland was stunning too! I like the clip of the six of us walking in too - we all carried much the same kit, or variations of it, the packs make it look like more, but the kit we could could take was limited to just a few basic Items. The rest we had to find or make. Great fun!! I’m looking forward to doing the next challenge now! Atb, Simon.

Cheers Terry! We were really lucky - the food part of the equation was removed really, so we only had to focus on the other elements of wilderness survival, a real bonus!! The emphasis was bushcraft rather than survivalism. Cheers! Simon.

Well done Simon! You did yourself proud & it was a pleasure seeing how well you coped with the task. Only one thought, might be easier just skinning the game, rather than plucking, which is tedious & time-consuming. This, of course, from someone who's never done anything as challenging as this!! Looking forward to your next adventure. TashyPete.

Cheers Pete! Glad you enjoyed!! In hindsight, I wish I had just skinned it - it was a pain to pluck and I ended up tearing the skin anyway!! I wanted the fat intact which is why I did, but really, I could have just scraped the fat from the skin!! You live and you learn!! Atb mate, Simon.

Just found your site very enjoyable and thanks for sharing. If you want a tip with regards quickly getting feathers off a pheasant in that situation rather than plucking you can put the head on the floor, lay it on its back, open the wings, stand on the wings close to the breast, take both legs and gently pull upwards. You'll find it's jacket will come off cleanly in one piece, giving you a skinned and de-feathered carcus ready to prep and or roast whole. 20 Seconds and you're good to go.
@simonablokeinthewoods

Cheers James! I wish I’d tried that at the time - I mostly ended up skinning the poor girl anyway - it just tore as I plucked!! I’ll know for next time!! That sounds like a nice, efficient technique. Thanks for the tip!! 👍 Atb, Simon.

I have been been doing this sort of thing in Indiana for a long time and also hunting, the cold stops being such a problem at least for me, being a bigger dude I remember when goin out for the weekend when it was 30 was a problem and I had to pack everything and the kitchen sink to make it bearable. I don’t know if it’s due to getting used to the exposure or maybe the clothes I wear. The first ascent insulated pants are a game changer for me and I’d suggest every outdoorsy person buy at least a pair

Impressed with your video. Your shelter is spot on: blocks the wind, traps the heat and offers protection from the rain. If you’re working without a sleeping pad, an elevated bed area is a must. The ground will sap your body heat away. Eating pheasant in a bush craft challenge? That’s pretty fancy! Loved the video , sir. Keep it up. One can learn a lot from your presentation.
@simonablokeinthewoods

Thank you Chris! The shelter very much evolved as the weekend went on, but certainly performed well - the rain was the proof of the pudding - I was quite comfortable! I was really pleased with the raised bed too, as you said, I’d have been cold sleeping on the ground that’s for sure - next time, I’d get some more soft material on top, it wasn’t bad, but could have been better! I tell you, that pheasant was amazing - a real treat!! The fat was a boost and I’m sure helped keep the cold at bay through the night!! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comments! Cheers, Simon.
