First winter ascents of one grade VIII and two IX mixed routes on Ben Nevis and Glen Coe which I did during December. The latter two routes were quite scary leads and I talk a bit about approaches to dealing with this sort of terrain.

I know you’ve spoken to it at length in previous videos but this casual look at some winter climbing really highlights how you’ve gotten the ‘fun all year round’ climbing thing sorted, brilliant!

Thanks for capturing these moments, Dave. My wife and I moved to Amsterdam a couple of years ago and we've been unable to get home since early 2020. Worse still, May 2019 was the last time I managed a trip into the mountains. Watching these winter adventures is somewhat bittersweet, but very enjoyable non-the less. The closest I'll get to experiencing it again for myself for a while. Thanks, and keep them coming, much appreciated.

A quick question, how often do you need to replace front points and pick on your crampons and ice tools, when you are doing this type of mixed climbing? I normally only goes on a few ice/mixed climbing trips each season (I live in Denmark, so a long drive from any cliffs), but this seems to be enough for me to wear down a new set of front points and tool picks each year. Is this because of poor technique or is it expected?

Hey Dave! Emil Abrahamsson just made a video on connective tissue health/strength increase using a hangboard. It would be great if you could check that out and discuss the pubmed article he used as a basis. Of course many people can read it as its not overly complex but I believe with your background in exercise science it would benefit the climbing community to reinterpret the paper.

I was a bit surprised to see you using the BD Reactor tools, which I was hearing are more focused on ice, on these routes rather than the Fuels, which are more focused on mixed. Any particular reason? Just trying out the new(ish) gear?

Iain smalls climbing ability is pretty stunning. It just seems like this fairly sort of unassuming guy, but then you see him climb up something like that, wicked

Had the great fortune to climb with Iain at the winter climbing meet in 2012, dragged me up Daddy Longlegs and the Citadel. His technique was stellar. Seems to be using the same fusion tools still.

Dave, I'm very inexperienced with ice climbing, so this might be a dumb question but, I was wondering, how does the axe affect the rock if you're swinging directly into it rather than into ice? Does anyone ever rock climb these routes?
@TheCaelanB
@TheCaelanB 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, so you've landed on what is a bit of a contentious ethical question in Scottish winter climbing. Some winter climbs (as with one in the video) follow the line of summer climbs. As you indicate, ice axes and crampons can visibly scratch and damage the rock, thus damaging the route for summer climbers. This is partly why there is such an emphasis on routes being "in condition", that is, rimed up and covered in ice. If a route is in condition it partially slows the damage to the rock. Despite this, damage still occurs and it's an issue that some climbers are quite unhappy about. Most though accept it as a necessary evil.

Man, I hate to see hacking and kicking at rock. Could someone explain what's going on and why dry tooling climbing routes is actually fine and I just don't know enough about it?
@howler6490
@howler6490 2 жыл бұрын
Used to be,if there wasn't enough ice to tool into...it was a rock climb. Then it was mixed where you sometimes held onto a rock sticking out the ice. Now? If yhe rock is white with rhime,dry tool it. Call me an old fart but I think " winter climbing" does need ice and snow.
