There is no need to be hesitant when speaking of certain behaviors one sees in America. What you were describing is reflective of N. America 2022 being less cohesive, not sharing a common set of values, and an embrace of individuals exerting their will at the expense of civil accommodation. It is what it is. 😢. Great video from the both of you. CA resident preparing for my journey to the Netherlands.

I'm tuning into this vlog of yours a half year later - ha - but still it's just as fun to watch and hear your comments. I went to Eftling once when I first came to stay in the Netherlands 23 years ago, so I'm sure a lot has changed since then. Regardless, I thought it charming even then. And I didn't know there's an Eftling hotel...and that with a hotel stay you can have passes to the amusement park. What a nice mini-vakay. I'd like to go back and do that too, maybe when my granddaughter visits from America next year. 🤞🤞🤞

elderly copple at 72.... ? I enjoy your stories very much as I am living in Johannesburg and remember my first visit to the Efteling when I was 5 years old and now a young 76 . I still hear 'papier hier' and 'kleine boodschap' It really was a 'fairy tale forest' then . Your tasting the Sinterklaas sweets let me mouth watering, I was waiting for the 'suiker beestjes' but they might not excist anymore. looking forward what comes next, warm greetings from a very wet Jo'burg

Something I miss in your intro is that "Efteling officially opened in 1952 when the Fairy Tale Forest (het Sprookjesbos), designed by the famous Dutch illustrator Anton Pieck and was larger than Disney land at first".

Hi 👋 As a Dutch Efteling fan I would like to explain the story behind Villa Volta. (in my opinion the best story of a 'ride' that Efteling has to offer, apart from 'The flying Dutchman' perhaps 🤪). Villa Volta is about the leader of a band of robbers who incurs a curse when he robs an abbey. There he meets a woman (maybe an angel) who warns him to stop robbing the church. But the gang leader Hugo overcomes his fear and laughs off her warnings. Then proceeds to crack the altar and steal the gold candlesticks. Returning home, the same woman stands on the roof of his house and he no longer finds peace in the house and in his soul. Until someone with a pure soul (like that of a newborn baby) visits his house and breaks the curse. So... Every day he receives hundreds of people in his cursed house, but the curse is still not broken to this day.

And part of the pre-story are villagers complaining about the robbers, how they burned down a farmer’s shed, and that the robbers instead should attack the land-owner. But the villagers know that “pride comes before the fall”.

Just to add context to what other people already told you about the backstory of Villa Volta: the "Bokkenrijders" (or Buckriders) myth is something akin to the Salem Witch trials in the US. During the mid to late 18th century, several gangs were active in the southern parts of the Netherlands and Belgium. Most of these gangs operated independently from eachother in different areas, however, the style in which they operated was very similar. When several homesteads were robbed in similar fashion throughout the countryside with for those days huge distances in between, the rumor started that these gangmembers had made a pact with the devil to ride around on goats through the sky to get from one place to the other as fast as they did. There were several trials over the course of 50 years. Hundreds of men were convicted and hanged in these trials. Most of them were either petty thieves who were not organized at all or plain innocent. Villa Volta plays on the theme very well with the main character Hugo defying the warning of an angel when his gang of Buckriders robs and desecrates the Postel Abbey, bringing upon him a curse by God himself that he will never find peace unless a pure hearted soul enters his homestead. The Postel Abbey exists today and was actually robbed during that time. Some parts of the abbey date back to the 12th century, it is located in the middle of a thick forested area known as the 'Kempen' and is especially pretty in autumn, very popular for hiking and bike rides, but hard to get to without a car! Sorry for the long story, I come from the area where the buckriders were supposedly active and the stories have facinated me as a child. Villa Volta is one of my favorite rides as well! Glad you enjoyed Efteling.

Aw, that picture of the elderly couple at the steam carousel brings tears to my eyes. If I am not mistaken, its one of the oldest attractions in the park that was a ride. The elderly couple probably went there as kids, and wanted to do relive that joy: together...
@dutchman7623
@dutchman7623 Жыл бұрын
It is the oldest attraction. It is an original steam carousel from around 1900 that traveled the fairs around the country until people wanted 'the rough stuff'. It was restored and a tent-like structure was build around it to protect it against the weather. Later the engine was transformed from steam to electricity but you can still see the old engine working in the middle. The original organ is still working, creating the sense of old days. Nothing better for a couple in love to go and sit in the coach pulled by horses, and go round. When I was a kid, there was only the fairy tale forest, a big playground, the carousel, the nature swimming pool, rowing and canoe pond, and the steam train that went through the forest. All this in a beautiful park with a lot of trees and flowers. And there was a water-organ; colored light on garden hoses that sprayed water on the organ music, a prehistoric Aquanura...

I expected you to go back to the Efteling. I didn't expect you to come back this soon. Very cool that you got to see Villa Volta now. Even without the story behind it, because I've heard it dozens of times, I'm still always impressed by it. The way the room was decorated and the ride with the movement, lighting and the dramatic music. The first time I went in I expected to get sick as I often got sick in things that move fast but to my suprise I didn't and enjoyed it many times since. I even remember a visit to the park many years ago when it was a very calm day in the park and there were so few people there that we didn't even had to leave the ride and we sat there for 4 or 5 rides after another. I think the trick is to notice that you're actually on a slow swing that is never going a full loop. You notice that when you look at the mirror on the side.

18:09 i can see my house..My flat 16 story high...i live 15 min away from the Efteling and i had a pass for years. Yes get the annual pass..When it is summer and the park is open until 22:00 u really get your moneys worth out of it. The fun thing about having a pass is you do not have to go a whole day..when the park is not busy you can just do a couple of hours. This park is like the holy grail for the dutch. You can't really be negative about it...And you were not negative about it, so good job.

Fata Morgana (Mirage) represents the forbidden city out of the tales of 1001 nights by Scheherazade. Through the jungle over a river you reach the harbor of the forbidden, hidden, city... By the water gate you enter the merchant and craftsmen quarter... By the next gate you enter the amusement quarter where people enjoy themselves with music, dance and conversation... Finally you get some glances at the palace... You pass the Djinn, who guards the secrets and warn you not to speak about anything you saw in the city... By the Cobra gate you return to your own world, a last warning to keep the city a secret... The scenes are from the tales of 1001 nights, both historic and the ones added later in the French translation. Did you truly visit the city or was it just a fata morgana? Will others believe you or will they say you believe in tales?

To think the Efteling theme park started as a shoe expo (the region was important in the shoe industry) and sports/activity park for the youth of Kaatsheuvel... (BTW it's a nature park, this means they may only use 11 % of their terrain for the rides etc. -by law) The Peacock is named Jeroen, Jeroen Pauw (which is kind of an easter egg, as there's a Dutch TV personality with that name - and Pauw = Peacock) Those windturbines and high buildings you see in the back in the clip when on the Pagode is Tilburg (Has historic links to clothing) If you ever go to Tilburg, try the Tilburgse Verleiding (pastry), Brabantse Worstenbroodje ("sausage" (actually it's grinded meat like a meatball) roll) and Schrobbelèr (an alcoholic drink brewed locally -They give tours¹) ¹= Translated from site: In the 3 Hour lasting program includes: - Reception with Coffee/tea en kuukske (Tilburgs for cookie/biscuit) - Tasting of 3 Schrobbelèr (servingtips) - Tour through the distillery - Closing in Schrobbelèr style/ambiance Tour can be expanded with: - Burgundian drink platter - Apple pastry - Warm Brabants worstenbroodje - Warm Brabants Vegan worstenbroodje Tickets and dates: shop.schrobbeler.nl/product-categorie/rondleiding/ The Schrobbelèr Tour is in Dutch. For English guests a book is provided explaining the tour, so you can read along with your guide. Video's also are translated to English. any questions will be answered in English (if needed)

Efteling was so impressed with Disney's Pirates ride that they dreamt of their own version of it, Fata Morgana. Walt Disney was so impressed with the Efteling that he wanted his own version of it, Disney World 🙂 It's nice how a shared passion for storytelling led to cross-inspirration between these two great parks.

The story behind Villa Volta is based on the stories surrounding the Bokkenrijders (Goat riders) . This was one robber gang who lived in the Brabant in the 18th century Kempen and Dutch and Belgian Limburg. The goat riders indicated their arrival by means of a sign on the farm or house that they would rob. According to the story, the leader of the Bokkenrijders, Hugo van den Loonsche Duynen, is cursed for his storming of the Abbey of Postel. Hugo was told by a mysterious woman ( Vrouwe Goeds ) what the curse means: "Nowhere in your own house, nor anywhere in the world, will you find peace or peace, now that you have violated God's house... Only then, when a noble man enters your dwelling place with the pure conscience of a newborn child, will you find peace in your house and in your heart..." Because of this curse, Hugo's house has been spinning ever since. The Bokkenrijders (The Goat riders) Bokkenrijders were according to it folk belief persons or spirits, who on goats drove through the air. In the 18th century this was the name given to one gang thieves, extortionists and perpetrators of violent robberies in the Overmaas countries and the former county of loon. The goat rider gangs were active with interruptions in the period between 1740 and 1798 in the present Dutch South Limburg and Central Limburg, Belgian Limburg and the Belgian and Dutch Kempen, the Belgian feeding region, it Land van Herve, around the region Liège and some areas just over the German border near Herzogenrath. The raids and extortion were generally directed against farms and rural rectories. Later, the goat riders received one from some Robin Hood-like status. Today it is believed that there were various criminal gangs and individuals who had no connections with each other. A large proportion of the approximately 1,200 accused and approximately 500 convicted are also considered innocent, as most confessions were enforced through torture. Bokkenrijders are now part of the intangible cultural heritage from Limburg.

A direct ancestor of my husband was tortured to make a confession (all documents about him and his proces can be found online). He was known as "het leemkuiken", lived in Geulle - Limburg, and was hung in 1773. We still believe he was innocent.

Haii in from the Netherlands and i wanna explain the sorry and the storry about the Theme Villa Volta, 1st Preshow the story goes like: The legend of Villa Volta is played on audio during the pre shows. This is in the Dutch language. Please find below a translation for your benefit. In the middle of the 18th century a wave of violence engulfed our Brabantian Campine and Limburg countryside. Hordes of unscrupulous bandits tore through our peaceful streets, plundering and setting fires. They called themselves “The Buckriders” after shadowy spirits of the air that, according to a medieval myth, swarmed the dark night sky, seated on bucks and could even penetrate sealed houses.

The story of Villa Volta is about a gang of Bandits that are called "de bokkenrijders" (the riders of male goats). They used to raid the lands near Efteling. The first room a lot of villagers complain about them and especially their leader Hugo. In the second room sits Hugo and he tells the tale of how he and his house got cursed when his gang plunderd the Abby of Postel. Only if someone with the pure soul of a newborn baby visits his home the course will be lifted. In the third room you experience the curse.

As you both, my wife and I also do like the Efteling. What a good idea to stay over for one night, we might consider to do that once too. A lot of the attractions are based upon fairy tales, some of Grimm, but also some are from 'folk telling'. And some attractions came out of the mind of Efteling workers. There are vids about that to find on YT.

Hi... seems you had a nice experience. You mentioned one of the attractions, Raveleijn.. That used to be a Dutch fantasy TV show (youth) many years ago in 12 episodes of aprox. 25 minutes.. So if you'd like to binge watch them I can provide a copy...

So villa volta is about a thief and his gang of goat riders. They come to an abandoned chapel but the light was on inside, and while they were plundering the altar that was full of riches... A ghostly lady appears telling them they will be cursed if they continue. He laughs her off and returns home only to find the lady on top of his house actually cursing him to live in his cursed house forever until someone with a pure soul enters to lift the curse. So the thief, Hugo, constantly invites people into his cursed home in the hope to lift the curse and he can move on.

So guys, you're about to become regular Efteling costumers, right ;-)? Well very nice, but are you aware that there are more Pretparken (Amusement parks)in The Netherlands? I mean The Grimm fairy tales park of The Efteling is far out, but there is more out there! Here are the 12 most popular ones: 01. Speelpark Oud-Valkeveen in Naarden, 02. Verkeers- en Attractiepark Duinen Zathe in Appelscha, 03. Amusementspark Tivoli in Berg en Dal, 04. Toverland in Sevenum, 05. Julianatoren in Apeldoorn, 06. Attractiepark Slagharen, 07. Walibi Flevoland in Biddinghuizen, 08. DippieDoe in Best, 09. Drouwenerzand Attractiepark in Drouwen, 10. Madurodam in Den Haag, 11. Familiepark Nienoord in Leek, 12 And the largest playground in Europe: Linnaeushof in Heemstede. And yet there are more, many more ! You guys got some explorin' to do I'd say ;-)

The parks you list are mostly large "speeltuinen". Great to go to with kids under 10 but ( loved it, often took my son and a friend there for a day of fun). But imho not enough to keep adults entertained. ( maybe toverland, slagharen, walibi and madurodam as exceptions). But generally many historical towns are very entertaining for a visit, although they often don't have a thrill ride.🤪 only mentioning some close to Rotterdam: Delft, den Haag en Scheveningen, Schoonhoven, Delftshaven, Leiden, Gouda, Voorburg en Dordrecht. If you visit a museum in each, get a drink on the square of the church, do some shopping in the boutiques, go on a bike or canal tour and enjoy the local historic attractions you'll probably have a perfect day. In this time of year you will probably find a Christmas themed market to go to.

Hahaha. You two went back there so fast your seats were still warm from last time. Disney and Efteling did not rip eachother off. They shared. Designers and builders visited eachother more than ones. Funny how Eric reacted to Tammy saying that Ravelijn can be combined with a meal. Hahaha. Waohh The fact you felt like eating means you were not woozy from the rides. And you saw Villa Volta. A true mad ride. And that is fine if you close your eyes. But holy crap! It is a very slow ride. But confusing to the max. I will probably get sick on the new haunted ride. That is a variation on Villa Volta. But still I look forward to it. The wireless mic on Python was funny. Python is a good rollercoaster. And the re-tracking they did made it a smooth ride. And for us that feel sick easily, it is short enough to remain standing. So even you could give it a go on a good day Eric. You got out of Baron 1898 okay more or less. Python is similar for people like us. It is not long enough to get extremely woozy. Just as the wooden coasters. Would be fun to see you explore the dark side of Efteling too. Creepy stories of dead parents, and children being eaten. Monsters, murder, mutilation, ghosts, lies. Very grim.

the story of villa volta is about a thieves guild called "de bokkenrijders" or goatriders that was active mid 18th century in limburg and brabant. they were believed to have made a deal with the devil and robbed people and churches while riding on demonic goats above the sky's . in the first room you get an explenaition about their origins and their symbol , a demonic goatleg. you also hear the reactions of the locals, some fear them and say that their eyes glow in the dark. others are more skeptical and say that day are just common criminals that don't dare to attack the lord of the castle but only bother the little people. In the second room you will get a story by "hugo van den loonsche duynen" he is the leader of the guild and is cursed. he tells you the story of when he and his men were out stealing and came across the "Abdij van Postel" (Postel Abbey). they saw gold inside and started stealing. when Hugo was robbing the altar he felt the hand of a woman on his shoulder. she was ghostly white and asked him to stop and leave the abbey alone. they ignored her and stole all the gold. when hugo went home (villa volta) she was standing on the top of his house waving her arms in the wind. you can see her in the park too. she cursed him with the following words: "nowhere in the world will you find rest not even in your own home, until someone with the soul as pure as that of an newly born child enters your home". Hugo asks you to enter his home so he might finally find the rest that he longs for. Hope this helps :)

In a reaction to the demolition of the “Spookslot” I’ve had a reaction about the app. And apparently they’re thinking about a backstory about the rides like the “bokkenrijders” (goat riders a legend about a group of thief’s which run through the air on their goats off hell) an a way to translate or tell it. But you would want in in the ride itself and you don’t want everybody to wear headphones. But they are working on it.

Oooh this was so much fun. When you love the fairytale ambiance and if you still see this comment today you should run and go to Delft right now! There is the Dickens festijn (festival). Only 2 days of the year, today being the 2nd. I love the Efteling. I used to go there every birthday of mine and about 50 times more haha. I'm not so fond of the rides myself so when everyone else is going on the rides I will strole in the fairytail park by myself. The donkey shooting coins out of his ... is from the fairytale 'Tafeltje dek je, ezeltje strek je en knuppel uit de zak ', according to Wikipedia translated "The Wishing-Table, the Gold-Ass (hey, I could say 'ass' 😳), and the Cudgel in the Sack" I had to check out your previous Efteling visit and I was dissapointed that you didn't treat your viewers to the super annoying, staying in your head ALL DAY music of the carnaval festival 🤣🤣 But I guess you two are too sweet to do that to your viewers. In summer they are open untill 22pm, so if you want more time... (even when having a ticket you have to make a reservation for it!) but the summer days are crowded like crazy. Standing in ride lines for an hour is no exception. And the wasps, oh my... a million more than there are people. As someone mentioned the stoomtram, there's a Dickens ride as well, unfortunatly sold out so maybe next year. Perhaps a 'museumcard' is something for you. It's an annual card for €65 each which gives you free entrance to most museums in the Netherlands. Love your video's 💜

It's a pity there are so many construction spots in the Efteling at the moment, however, that will pass;-) I think it was a big plus for you to have gone in the week. It's always busy in the weekends, but of course due to schools: you had the best experience possible! Magical huh. 🥰 We go to the Efteling at least once a year and stay at Bosrijk. That is a lovely experience as well: rabbits roaming around, pretty quiet area and very nice cottages. The Ravelijn show has a book and TV show attached too. It's an entire thing;-) Created by one of The Netherlands' most respected children's authors. My 8-year-old is obsessed with Vogelrok. I think I hate it as much as you, Eric;-) It's a pain! Fata Morgana is an old ride. I think it is still popular with your viewers due to nostalgia. I think it show its age (think it's about 50 years old, but I could be mistaken). To me Droomvlucht and Symbolica are head and shoulders above it; as a dark ride goes. Villa Volta is a story of the 'Bokkenrijders' . If you'd like to know the bases of the legend you can find it on Wikipedia in English by looking at the Buckriders. Basically the guy in the Villa was cursed due to a connection there. Fabula was made with WWF and they have a support shop for the foundation. Side note, if you like trains, there is an old steam-train ride in North Holland that you might find fun to do. It's between Hoorn and Medemblik. They don't do rides in winter with the exception of a Christmas ride soon! I can't link the website (which is also in English), but it starts with ' stoomtram'. Might be fun if you haven't already done it. Have a great week!

YOU WERE SO CLOSE TO WHERE I LIVE!!! Me and my husband had our weddingnight in the efteling hotel, in the fatamorganaroom. That is one of the theme rooms in the corner towers. It was super tacky, whit a round turning bed and mirrors on the seiling. I arrangend for a breakfast in the room and it was brought to us by some fairytale characters. So there stood Hansel and Grethel, Snowwhite and sleeping beauty in our room while we were gravveling for som clothes to cover ourselves. And we didn't thought about bringing a change of clothes so I had to put on my weddingdress again. It was realy akward but we had a good laugh whit it.
