In most areas, native vegetation probably isn't providing enough forage to carry the deer herd over the winter. This is why a well designed food plot program can be an important tool for hunting and improved deer herd quality. Late winter and late summer are critical times for whitetails. Watch this video to see tips on how to monitor your available forage and plan for a better food plot program this year.
It's the perfect time to check food plots for quantity and quality to ensure you have better deer hunting next fall.
#deerhunting #foodplots
Food plot establishment and management techniques and the seed varieties have improved significantly during the past 25+ years. In 1995 we visited New Zealand to learn about the forage varieties they grew to enhance antler growth in the red deer raised for meat and velvet antlers. From that visit, we brought back information that transformed the way I approached food plots and forage for whitetails.
On my hunting property (which I refer to as The Proving Grounds) I’ve researched, tested and implemented food plot practices and seed blends that maximize the quantity of quality forage. If these seed blends and rotations work here they will work on any property in the whitetails’ range.

Ok. Many may call these facts redundant but this repetition contrasting with every iteration of results drives the point of the buffalo system home. In addition, the reminder to pull back from the microcosm of a single deer season and into a year round strategy is very good advice. Thanks for a vid full of reminders, Dr. Woods.

As a permaculture practitioner and hunter it makes me extremely happy to see how you have replaced some use of chemicals and turned mimic what nature already does. I plan to find the right blends for my climate to help deer make it to the wintering yards very healthy and ready to survive the big winters we have! Awesome job on the food plots, they are a thing of beauty!

Clever - I suspect you'll need to use prescribed fire and herbicide to terminate the fescue. Many herbicides cause way less damage to the soil than disking.

I’d love to see the occasional video featuring the bee hives!! Are any of your fields designed for production ag? Are they all food plots? I would assume that most of your fans are hunting near production ag fields.

Great info, Doc. Two questions. Without out access to a crimper, is there an alternative? What do you plant for bees? Thanks!
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 3 жыл бұрын
Jim - Herbicide can be used to terminate crops, but this isn't as friendly to the soil at crimping. We have great native vegetation so there are flowers throughout the growing season, as well as several forage varieties in our blends that flower at different times.

Grant, is the Buffalo System food plot method applicable in Minnesota? I have a small plot on my five acres behind my house on the edge of a swamp. The area is flooded in early spring before the frost comes out from the snow melt. I have tried many types of seed and they grow but don’t seem to really reach full potential. This spring I am wanting to try something like a Buffalo system, if that would be a good option, to help with the wet soil and make it healthier over time. Thanks for the videos and info!
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 3 жыл бұрын
Max - I'm not aware of any forage crop that does well with wet feet (soggy soil). This prevents having plants growing as many days out of the year as possible. In your case, I'd focus on having the best food in the neighborhood during hunting season.

I also use a genesis drill to plant. Your plots seem to be so much thicker then.. you can’t even see anything that resembles a row. Mine comes up in rows and looks that way all fall. You can tell it’s been drilled. How do you get yours so thick? Or is that just the Buffalo system when its fully established? Thanks
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 3 жыл бұрын
Old Skull - Sounds like the forage in your plots are heavily browsed. I try to have ample quality forage this time of year. The soils here are very good due to years of using a Genesis and planting quality blends. Checkout GreenCoverSeed.com. The blends I'll plant this spring will be shown there soon. They have the best prices I've found.

Blake - I've studied soil and soil life for years and use a process to allow the soil to release it's potential. This grows way more tonnage and healthier forage than the traditional plow and add synthetic inputs. Stay tuned and we'll be sharing much more about this process!

What blend should I plant for a dence wooded area
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 3 жыл бұрын
Trapper - I assume you are planting in food plots. There won't be much forage in the dense timber so the blend needs to produce a lot of tonnage! Checkout GreenCoverSeed.com. Brillions are designed to drop seed on bare soil and then they have an attached cultipacker. If planting small-sized seed on bare soil is the mission, they work great! If you wish to improve the soil and use the system I use, a no till drill or even broadcasting would work much better.
