I just quit my job and left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple cabins and structures from the timber on the land. I may have made a huge mistake as doing this at the start of Winter in late November may make general construction difficult if not impossible.
My first project is a 12' by 16' cabin using the BUTT AND PASS method with raw logs. It will include a sleeping loft and a steel roof. I will not be milling or saddle notching the logs, but chinking in the small gaps that do appear with the butt and pass method with raw logs. This method's main advantage is SPEED.
To all my viewers and subscribers, STRENGTH AND HONOUR! 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲

Don’t forget that your atv has a winch. Put snatch block the log u want to lift and run your cable from the opposite side of cabin. Then use winch to skid the log up the ramps

After you watch, you will then watch all episodes on the channel from beginning to end. You will get great information to help you with further building episodes. R.I.P. SR. Just a thought, but by putting more blocks in between the ones you already have it will reduce the amount you have lift in one go. It will reduce the angle of the log as you lift at one side and stop them slipping off the other side of your ladder ramp. It would not take long and reduce your risk. When trying to get higher love too the top. Thinking more for your next build 😊

For hoisting your roof logs install a long log vertical on each end on the inside of your logs on gable ends. Secure a sling or a lifting eye on top of vertical logs so you can attach a comealong or chainfall to lift roof beams up one end at a time. Make sure you have vertical logs securely fastened and braced. Dont get under any loads being lifted!!! Frozen logs have the potential to slide. Good luck you crazy guy!!!

A little hard to make an ID from the short clip but I believe that was a Hairy Woodpecker. It is not a pileated woodpecker. Those were indeed ravens. The boat shaped tail is an identifying field mark while in flight. It's great that you're trying to ID the flora and fauna on your homestead. Always good to know who your neighbors are. Good progress on the cabin. You'll figure out how to get the gables and ridge log in place. Just be slow and steady and don't be in the fall line of the big log when you move it into place. Thanks for the video.

Pretty impressive so far. I watched a cabin build from The Bearded Carpenter, and this gentleman built a wooden crane 🏗️ with wheels, this allowed him to easily lift heavy logs via chain and pulley and set them where he liked. He obviously was able to do this because he set the hard wood floor foundation first but just food for thought.

Dig a hole each end of cabin stand a log up in it with a hole with rope through it back fill hole so you cat attach a block and tackle to one end of rope and secure it so your making a jib pole aka man operated crane or winch operated it's used in remote areas for building barns or lattice work steel electricity pylons or towers secure pole to top log or brace as needed to strengthen also if you rip a log one end to other so it's split down middle length wise put a mortice each end so it doesn't roll around and sit it on part of top log that sticks out on corner of cabin it would be secure and safer than scaffolding and as your so far of the ground make a make shift harness out of rope then use a safety rope to prevent a fall while working an abseiling harness is better and tie short length of rope to harness with a carabiner on the end of it to snap onto safety rope it would even work for when you build roof of cabin best of luck James

Also look if you have a tool rental place nearby. Even Home Depot tool rental. Instead of buying the material to build the scaffold you could rent some conventional scaffolding and rent a 16ft plank or “pick”. Set up a section of scaffold on each corner. Then run the pick between them. Place a board under each leg of the scaffold so that it doesn’t sink in dirt/mud.

I just read up on you. Quite a radical change in life to do from your previous career as a "star" in movies and TV, a sort of matinee idol, to this! It's as if you turned your back on Fame and Big Bucks and sought a very simple existence. What I discovered too, is that you can afford to do just about anything you want as far as this life goes with 40 acres of land and all these tools, and now an ATV, etc. So there is that. All told you are a very eccentric fellow.

Suggestion for using your jetsled to transport cargo... Drill a few holes along the top rim that you can use to hook bungie cords and teardown straps, and maybe pick up a Bungie cargo net at Canadian Tire... it will be a game changer. Also if you cable hanging about the build site was heavier and a bit higher you could use it in conjunction with a pull block and tackle system to lift and maneuver your build materials onto the upper portion of the cabin.

You should be looking for efficiencies. Either get an ATV trailer or a second sled so you can move more material with every trip - same time and fuel, 3-5x the work done. Also check to see if you have structural screws or not. Non structural don't have shear strength, and you don't want to bank your life on crappy screws.
