Lisa when I first started leading multi week trips in Quebec and Labrador on rivers that I wasn’t familiar with I would regularly make notations on my maps. To help better understand what the gradient looked like as I was in planning phase I would draw a line across the river where ever a contour line crossed the river. This was a quick and easy way to get a river profile and helpful for overall trip and itinerary planning especially since many rapids and even some waterfalls weren’t identified on the maps. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you on the water.

Absolutely. Solid advice. No one should ever be surprised by a set of falls if they’re paying attention (sound)/horizon line, or they’ve done their homework. Great comment.

Go for it! Plan and stay safe. But most of all, make sure the only thing holding you back isn’t you.

Thank you Lisa. Sounds like good advise, an a very technical river. Better to have it planed out ahead of time.

Often, my trips will have me weaving in and out of multiple topo maps, which can get confusing if you're using many maps. So I will make a grid in Excell with the names of the maps laid out in the way they are arranged. Then, I'll add a number in the grid that corresponds to my route so I know which map I turn to when I travel between maps. I might have butchered that description, but it works for me! I love Map Season almost as much as I do Paddling Season!

Good idea. Because Google earth maps are so incredible at what you can see and make out on a river I flip between those and topo maps.

Great topic, thanks for sharing. Who makes or where do you find the best maps once you decide on an area you want to explore?

Hap Wilson makes some fine Guide books and in those books he has the Topo plate number you can source online. I also Google free topo maps of Canada by province. New Brunswick, Ontario and the like. Also Google Earth and if I find a river on KZfaq I’m interested in the filmmaker is good about sending the link to maps. As canoeists we all help each other. Good luck.

My French is not good but I got the message. I love the City of Quebec and the Rivers of New Brunswick! Thanks for watching. Canada has such a powerful canoe history I wish it was on the flag instead of the Maple leaf. 🍁 Fair winds and full bellies.

Where do you get your maps?
@3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide5 ай бұрын
I google USGS topo and usually that site will have you zoom into an area. Finding the closest town or major features on either google maps or google earth can usually get me to the USGS quad. If it’s Maine nothing beats DeLorme. I just recently saw a KZfaq video for the Bloodvein River in Manitoba Canada and had no clue how to get a hold of that so I commented to the channel asking for the link to the topo maps used. He just got back to me with the link.
