Lisa when I first started leading multi week trips in Quebec and Labrador on rivers that I wasn’t familiar with I would regularly make notations on my maps. To help better understand what the gradient looked like as I was in planning phase I would draw a line across the river where ever a contour line crossed the river. This was a quick and easy way to get a river profile and helpful for overall trip and itinerary planning especially since many rapids and even some waterfalls weren’t identified on the maps. Often, my trips will have me weaving in and out of multiple topo maps, which can get confusing if you're using many maps. So I will make a grid in Excell with the names of the maps laid out in the way they are arranged. Then, I'll add a number in the grid that corresponds to my route so I know which map I turn to when I travel between maps. I might have butchered that description, but it works for me! I love Map Season almost as much as I do Paddling Season!
