The Office of Public Works’ annual Winter Solstice gathering at the Neolithic Passage Tomb of Newgrange on 21 December was cancelled this year, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
The hugely significant Solstice Sunrise event was live-streamed from within the Chamber, on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of December, so that everyone could experience this wonderful phenomenon from any location around the world.
During the closure, an archaeological research project was carried out at the 5,200 year old Newgrange monument where we scientifically measured and monitored the movement of the winter sunlight coming through the roof box into the passage and chamber, to determine how the beam of dawn light interplays with the chamber as we move towards Solstice and then past it.
Results of this research project will be issued in 2021.
Live recording officially commences at 6.55mins on this Video (Please fast-forward)

Thanks a million to OPW and to all the behind the scenes people for this terrific opportunity to be with you in spirit in Newgrange and feel connected to others all over the world who tune in to this profound and liminal experience. Special thanks to Clare and Frank for your great commentary, your love for Newgrange and all it means is apparent. I especially love Clare’s encouragement to be with the experience of the sunlight arriving in the passageway. Grianstad shone dhaoibh go léir.

In 1942 I visited Newgrange with my father. The caretaker gave us a key to the gate and two candles. For this he was rewarded with a tip of sixpence. He warned us that some professors were referring to the monument's 'pagan' origins but he assured us that it was built by Christians. And in my lifetime Newgrange has grown to be a World Heritage site taking its place among the other famous neolithic monuments.

Watching this-experiencing this-has been such a rich experience for me. I'd never heard of Newgrange before now. Thank you. May the dead be proud of your efforts, and may the Sun continue to bless us all.

Well done to OPW for inviting everyone to spend this year's Winter Solstice with them at the beautiful and magical, Newgrange. Shame about the weather but I can still feel connected to our ancestors, who stood there watching and waiting for that moment when the sun offers her rays of life-giving light back to the world for another year. We Loved it xxx.

Good Morning from Chicago in the United States . THANK YOU to the OPW for always making this video available to the public!!!! I have been to Newgrange and it is an absolute wonder to behold. I have even left a little DNA on one of the roof beams!! The builders were not very tall. I will continue to submit an entry into the Solstice Lottery and hope to make another visit there sometime. THANK YOU Again.
