Happy Winter Solstice....the reason for the season.

It's a special inheritance... One to take pride in as Northerners, as descendants of ancient people who looked for meaning in the world. We would do good to take notice of their achievements and follow their actions (well, the positive-minded actions)... Thank you for posting this wonderful film.

I come from West, the land of Arthur and I bring the fire" "I come from East, the land of Siegfried and I bring the fire". "I come from North, the land of Erik the Red and I bring the fire" "I come from South, the land of Romulus and I bring the fire" may the winter solstice be a good omen to all European peoples

Greetings from St. George, Utah, USA. I've always been interested in the Orkney's and specifically the town of Stromness especially since my last name is Stromness. My ancestry is from Norway. I visited the Orkney's in 2002. Thanks for this program.

Thank you for a very Interesting program. We traveled from here in Norway to Orkney several summers ago and spent a fascinating afternoon in Maeshowe. The dialect really intrigues me! Keep it alive! I’d love to study some day the differences between Orkadian and Shetland dialects and their similarities to present day Norwegian. Happy solstice!

Delightful and informative. Fascinating. I savored every word, particularly in the Orkney dialect. Long may it flourish. Thank you.

I thoroughly enjoyed this program…from my home in West Virginia, USA. Alison Miller’s poem brought tears to my eyes, and I learned much about the Orkney heritage and lore. Thank you! Happy Solstice!!

That was amazing! My Short family comes from Orkney. Not only did I learn about the Winter Solstice, but I have seen the language that they likely knew well and took to the new world with them. Amazing to see my family's history, a little bit, anyway. Thank You for such an all encompassing program.

Very interesting programme - I grew up in Drogheda and our Dad used to take us out to Newgrange after it had been reopened to the public. When I was about 8 or so, I once asked if I could visit during the solstice but was told by the guide that there was a 20 year waiting list. I wanted to say that I could wait, so put my name down, but was too shy. That was nearly 50 years ago. Now you have to enter a lottery to get in. Anyhow, Maeshowe looks impressive and fascinating - I'll have to visit at some stage. Sláinte

That's why the guy in the sweater is telling us the builders didn't gather there to worship. They don't want crowds of people there doing ceremonies all the time.
@johngough2958
@johngough2958 2 жыл бұрын
@@watermelonlalala The sweater guy was implying even more: that the living were not supposed to be there over the solstice at all. The tumulus at Newgrange does not actually hold that many people and clearly wasn't designed for any gathering at the solstice. In fact, the rays of the sun would land at the floor of the inner chamber, so they would have to get down on the ground to see. The Maeshowe chamber looks as if it was designed specifically to hold more people, it came after Newgrange.

Wonderful. I went to Orkney a long time ago, in 1991, and spent a memorable day biking around Mainland and visiting all the Neolithic sites while being buffetted by rain squalls sweeping off the Atlantic. It really captivated me. I also recall that some of the runes on the walls of Maeshowe were quite rude, as you might expect from graffiti from a bunch of Viking warriors.

On the island of Jersey there is an excavated mound very similar to Maeshowe. The name of it is La Hougue Bie. Very similar to "Hog Boy", don't you think?

Wasn’t the tall stone in alignment in original time to shine/reflect the sun, it had the main purpose,I think the alignment has changed in a few thousand years

Hello! We live-streamed the film above as part of our solstice celebrations. Unfortunately, unpredictable weather meant we weren't able to go for a live stream of the sunset, but there is timelapse footage and photos of the solstice effect towards the end of the film.

What a pity Adams Calendar in South Africa is not referenced, because it is so much older and on the 21st December it aligns with the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere on the 21st December.

Amazing indeed how much idle speculation these ancients (?) were able to generate in the fantasy filled heads of 21st century humans (who have no clue whatsoever about the reason, origin, purpose and function of this structure..)
