Even though it was technically spring, my trip to Colorado felt much more like a winter adventure. I traversed the state to photograph three different locations: Rocky Mountain National Park, Boulder, and Steamboat Springs. At every spot I only ended up taking one photo, a wintry panoramic scene capturing the variability of spring in the Rocky Mountains.
This trip was much too cold to do any sort of backpacking or long hiking, so my photography was a bit limited compared to other trips. But I was grateful to have a 4x4 Jeep ready to hit the snow covered roads.
For the first part of the week, I traveled to Rocky Mountain National Park. The weather was gloomy and grey in the high plains, but once Estes Park was in sight, the skies cleared with just intermittent snow squalls from time to time. The snow storms cresting over the mountain peaks made for some dramatic winter storm scenery, and I was able to capture a powerful panorama of the scene.
Next, I spent a few days in Boulder, CO. There were some nicer days, but the only day I had enough time to hike and photograph was grey and stormy, again! A new winter storm system was rolling in over the Flatirons, making for some grey, but dramatic, skies overlooking the town.
To wrap up the trip, we hit the road to Steamboat Springs. I am fortunate enough to be a property owner in the region, so we went to visit our plot of land and film the wintry conditions in the far northern part of the state. I visited a favorite location and ended up taking another panorama of a frozen lake as the winter white out snow rolled through.
I am still thawing out from this trip! I hope you enjoyed this abbreviated photography adventure in the Rocky Mountain state. Until next time - happy trails!
Brian

Wow so much snow! If only California got some of that precipitation. That first pano was gorgeous, I think that was my favorite image of the three. But of course the other two are quite spectacular. Another wonderful video, thanks for sharing Brian!

Thanks Michael! I know really... I was set to go to Mammoth for a trip but it actually snowed TOO much. Oh well. Glad you liked the first one best, it’s one of my favorites from the winter. Thanks as always for watching!

Welcome back to CO! That first pano was awesome! RMNP is so great in the winter as there are seldom any visitors, but tough to get good conditions, need to be lucky. I've never thought of shooting in Boulder and I've never been up to Steamboat Springs. That image was great as well, loved the minimal simplicity! Well done!

Thanks Christopher! It was great to be back, even for a quick visit. I've never been to RMNP in the winter, and it definitely didn't disappoint! Boulder was a decent afternoon, but tough to compare to Rocky Mountain NP. And SS is so remote, it was really different from the other parts of CO I visited. Glad you liked the panos! Jealous of your home state :)

Blown away by the scenery in the opening footage Brian - just sooooo beautiful ! Image #1 What a stunning pano ! Those skies look super dramatic and the storm clouds in Boulder were again just superb - great conditions for a moody shot but don't blame you for heading back ! And then that snow at Steamboat Springs wow! Woah what an amazing 3 location vlog Brain - your content just gets better and better - great stuff !

Thanks Andrew! I'm glad that you enjoyed the journey through each location. I didn't make it intending to be a photography dedicated trip, so I was happy to end up capturing a cool shot in each place visited. Although I'm sure you're hoping for better weather than this on your side of the pond!

Very beautiful CO trip, I think I saw you hiked up to Dream Lake area. I love this park so much. Great panorama shot. I like the black and white shots you did in Boulder in the winter storm. Wow, that winter weather was something else at Steamboat Springs. Beautiful scene with you two there. The drive back was amazing scenery for sure

Thank you Nicole! I did hike up to Dream Lake. It was completely frozen over but still a stunning view! Glad you liked the panoramas. The drive back was beautiful but a little rough in spots with all of that snow.

Nice video Brian. I really enjoyed it. Great that you found places to fly the drone as it really adds a lot to the story. I like the 1st and 3rd panos best. That atmosphere with pines receding in B&W is wonderful. Living in Florida, I miss winter too.

Thanks Scott! Glad you enjoyed it. And yes the drone was fun to try playing around with on this trip, and I really lucked out with such peaceful snowy days to work with. Heavy rain and wind would have killed any opportunity to fly. I definitely miss winter, but I prefer these smaller doses where once it gets old, I know I won't have to put up with it for another month!

That trail in RMNP is super popular even in the winter so it's not an awful hike in the snow. Nice to be out there with smaller crowds than the summer months. Some beautiful scenery in this video. Glad you got to enjoy it!

Really thought the one from steamboat was spectacular. I also struggle up in RMNP to find photographs when the skys blue and the lights harsh but your surrounded by such great views. Sometimes its just best to take it in with your eyes. Great video and sweet footage👍

I have hardly seen any snow this winter so to see conditions like this made me quite jealous Brian, especially with those wonderful peaks surrounding you on the 1st pano, cracking image. When you said about being the only people around for abt 100 miles that is so surreal - if you come from this tiny island we call the uk...lol. The last image had a look of film, probably because of the conditions, I liked it. Atb Al

Thanks Alan! It was great hanging out in such a remote part of the mountains for some winter weather. Appreciate the comment that the last pano was film-like, I definitely think the snow falling added some of that aesthetic. Thanks as always for watching! And always enjoy the great stuff from the UK 👍

How do you keep that camera and lens steady in the wind? It is super sensitive to any shake? Also the drone footage seemed quite steady in the wind and snow- any thoughts on that? Nice work, don't eat the yellow snow.

Haha thanks John! I leave the video camera on a tripod fairly low to the ground to stay a bit more stable. The drone, I’m not sure... just great tech I guess!
