Join me and my wife of nearly 20-years, and I on a winter survival challenge in the north of Canada as we struggle to stay warm and fed! We ice fish for food with just a few basic fishing tools and bust through thick ice with an axe to get the food below. Woodobo SPICE (FOR SALE): tinyurl.com/y7...

Primitive challenge with a few simple basic tools.
I bring along a snowshoe hare that I snared using simple metal wire.
I'll show you how to catch a fish using just a tree branch!
I'll teach you to cook a fish over a fire without a frying pan!
Can we stay warm and comfortable? Can we catch enough food to keep our energy levels up using just line and a hook?
We use a saw and basic tools to make a bushcrafter shelter in the a Northern Canadian forest using materials around us like conifer bows and cedar.
I attempt a friction fire using primitive technology - a cedar spindle, hearth board, and some birch bark and cedar shavings for a tinder bundle. Can I get a fire lite in tough winter conditions?
Can you eat snow? Find out! Will I be able to keep my wife warm and avoid frost bite?

Being a millennial myself I already know what kind of shit you're gonna hear from my generation for your views on gender roles. But for me, I've never had a father in my life and it's really reassuring to hear you talk so openly and plainly about the traditional role of masculinity. It resonated deeply within me. It's frowned upon where I'm from to speak of such traditions in frank, but I think I've needed to hear it. So thanks for that, I wish I had had a proper role model such as yourself in my life as I was growing up. Your son is very lucky to have you in his life!

If I can break it down, it's to this...women want a break, they want to relax, to joke around, to be playful, and if they are in charge, they can't and it eventually burns them out. One day they wake up and wonder where the good men are, why is no one taking care of them, where is masculinity. It isn't about being a boss, it's about being a man, someone with good morality, fairness, character, tenacity. It someone who makes difficult decisions even when it might involve discomfort, or a long horizon to something better. It's about leading. We all know a good leader when we see one, and in some way, we need all men to share the burden so that women can have a break and enjoy themselves. Men are great leaders because they take pride in it, women will do it, but since they don't enjoy status as greatly as men do, they often find it taxing. Men are built leaders, just leading is a pay-out.

That's the kind of advice every young guy pays fortunes to hear (and never gets it), and here you are dishing it to us free of charge. Rock on man. The world needs more leaders like you.

I have some video be-programmed to release on a schedule, and for some reason they all got messed up. They will ALL come out in due time. If I don't keep some content back, I will have big holes in the channel with nothing coming out. Hope you understand.

Three years ago wife and I started building our dream home. We started by cutting huge pine trees on my friends property. Then we bought a sawmill. We sawed the logs( 243) of them onto timbers Only to find we could not use the lumber to build with. ( Local building code.) We built anyway using graded timber. We used our lumber to do non structural finishes. Down now to the finishes. Btw we are in our 60's. (

Courtney you did very well for a non woodsy lady. I give you points for showing how to pee in the woods for ladies..most ladies won't do that when someone is close by but you did it on video, that's awesome and like your hubby said it helps other ladies who haven't been in the outdoors feel more confident about that issue. I hope you will consider doing more of these survival challenges with your hubby, it's not only a bonding thing but it's great for veiwers who are interested in survival to do it as a couple, not as individuals from a couple. Not only is it inspiring but you show that a couple can still have fun together even though your doing something your not always doing. I would most certainly love to see more of the couple survival challenges more often..thanks.

Awesome video man. I didn't even realise it was an hour until it finished. Im sure you're aware of this but, once you've picked all you can off the fish you can boil the bones in water to make a simple fish soup. In a true survival situation it would be just that little bit extra food. I really hope you get cast for Alone. You would kill that competition. I'd never heard of it before seeing your audition tape but now I can't stop watching it.
@TheWoodedBeardsman

Thanks Jake. Yeah, I do know about boiling the fish, but I think it takes hours to break down all the bones. If i had a big fish, I certainly would or a bunch of fish, or needed to preserve them or lots of fish heads. I might try it one time and see how long it takes to break down the bones.

Good video...you got a new sub! I myself am pretty happily single, but it's good to see you 2, after almost 20 years, still in love...don't see that enough anymore...hope to see you all in 40 years still going strong! And the rest of the video was good as well. ;)

I stumbled upon your channel last night and man, I'm loving your videos! I can watch for hours and learn something, I also like how you speak on topics such as traditional male and female rolls in the wilderness, because they are still important to this day and applicable in the modern world.

We each have an important role, and we're happier doing them. It's the complete role reversals that create conflict and misery. I've tried it both ways, this one is better.

Courtney looks like a very nice person with a super attitude. She has to be,a good woman to live with you. I say that because my father was a lot like you, always building things , going out fishing or hunting and Mama was a good woman to have lived with him 67+ years. Of course it filled my life with adventure and learning. I was able to do many things through his teaching and guidance, not to mention just following after him and helping. You guys are super!

My husband and I have been together for 13 years, we do life together too. He's remained by my side through my terminal diagnosis and has been learning the skills necessary to do life without me when that day comes. He's got two more little ladies in his life that will need him to teach them too. For now, I fill in where his weaknesses are and he fills in my many weaknesses as well. Having a reliable life partner is so important, I wish more survivalists would show this aspect.

I'm happy to hear that from you, and also THAT SUCKS about your condition. What else can you do, but keep your chin up and do best with what you've been given. Much respect, you sound like you're a great person with a bad set of cards. How do you get a re-deal...life can be shit sometimes.
@pittiesmom10

My re-deal will come if I'm offered the opportunity for a double lung transplant. Til then, I enjoy whatever quality of life I have and don't make a big deal out the quantity. I'm only 30yo but don't have much on my bucket list so I don't feel cheated. My life is heavily blessed regardless of however it ends. Thanks for the kind words and excellent teachings!

Several years later I’m still here. Still fighting back every day and while some days really suck, I still feel blessed. My girls have been learning survival skills with their dad and we love your channel! They are tough kids, learning to shoot bows and guns and one day soon the oldest will be ready for a real hunt with dad. Just wanted to drop in a give a small update and say hi.

Me and my wife are outdoorsy (well, i made her that way n now she actually would nag me to take her whenever i go)! we are from the Maldives, so no forests here. but we love going fishing, snorkeling n spear fishing! we are planing to spend a week in an uninhabited island! :) love ur vids n Courtney should definitely join in on the fun! Nature is beautiful n too many people are disconnected from it in these modern times!

In the absence of a fish shack, it is literally brilliant. Keeps you off the lake and out of the elements till you actually have a FISH ON! And gets you to the fish before it has time to wiggle off. So simple and so smart for many reasons.

Hey man! Really enjoyed this episode. Ain't a damn thing wrong with acknowledging & embracing traditional gender roles & dynamics. Also - I want to say how nice it is to see you nodding in the direction of how men can articulate & manifest a positive masculine presence in their lives too. My Father passed away in October of 2018. As I've been coming up on the 1 year mark of him being gone, checking out your channel has been helpful in my ability to process the grief from his loss lately. He was an outdoorsy type that taught my brother & I how to fix our cars, carpentry basics, to appreciate deer meat, solid work ethic, being a good man to your woman etc etc etc. I'm a KZfaqr myself & I can see how much work you're putting into your channel & it looks like you're reaping the benefits. Keep them coming. -Dustin
