The Wooded Beardsman

Күн бұрын

Join Jeremy (One Wildcrafter) and I on a return trip to a SECRET LAKE, "Puddle Lake," we discovered two years ago!!! This time we travel overland by map and compass rather than through the barely navigable creek system. Our efforts are rewarded with fast paced ice fishing action and copious natural brook trout in a hidden glacier carved lake in Northern Ontario which we enjoy all to ourselves.
Jeremy [One Wildcrafter] Overland Exploration: • Overland to Puddle Lake
In all, it takes us 5 hours to reach our destination as we traverse snow covered hills, valleys, and brush choked overgrowth pulling our fully loaded Pelican sleds. This is not a trip for the amateur hot tent winter trekker! Find out if I survive falling into freezing cold water as I accidentally fall through the ice! This is a real life survival challenge!
Part 2 (live next Friday): • I FELL Through the ICE...
Sponsors Used
Pelican Trek 60 Sled: www.pelicanspor...
Big thanks to Pelican for quickly sending me the sled for this trip! The sled worked really well and endured all the abuse we threw at it.
ABOUT JAY VALENTE - CUSTOM STONE TOOLS!
Facebook: www.facebook.c...
Etsy: www.etsy.com/c...
KZfaq: / @wildernessquestoutdoors
NOTE: There are 6 Easter eggs, 3 in part 1 and 3 in part 2 which will be posted next Friday at 10 a.m. EST (See Rules Below) Since you can't win just watching Part 1, I would recommend you note the Easter Eggs, but keep them a secret!
CONTEST RULES EASTER EGG HUNT
You must find stuffed all 6 hidden "Easter Eggs." Let's test that hunter eye!
1. 3 Easter eggs will be hidden in part 1, and 3 in part 2 (next Friday at 10:00 EST).
2. Find all 6 Easter Eggs with the time stamp in which they appear to win.
3. Jot the Easter egg down with the appropriate time stamp in which it appears into part 2.
4. NO editing comments. Edited comments will be disqualified. Post as many comments as you want, but don't edit them!
5. Start a new comment (comment replies won't count)! DON'T reply to your own comment or anyone else's, I can't track when they are put in!
6. Don't drop spoilers or helpers into part 1 unless you want to spoil it for other people (save them for part 2).
7. Winner will be the first to identify and time stamp all 6 including the number of snowshoe hare I snared in the video.
8. Winner will receive a white chert knife made by Jay Valente of Vision Quest Outdoors www.etsy.com/c....
Along the way, we snare snowshoe hare, gain experience using a hot tent heated by off grid woodstove and cook goat leg and rack of ribs.
In part 2 of the trip, it turns for the worst with sleet, hail and high winds that drive pelting snow and threaten backdraft of smoke into the tent making conditions much more dire. To make matters worse, snow begins to melt forming never ending puddles into the hot tent.
Find out how we manage on our first ever hot tent adventure and how we deal with the many misshapes. The second day even sees that I pay for not avoiding possible thin ice as I fall through up to my chest.
ABOUT THE PRIZE - WHITE CHERT KNIFE
- Usable blade length is 4 ½ and almost 2 inches at its widest point. Blade is made from white Flint Ridge chert, Nethers Farm in Ohio. Blade is sharp and durable.
- The chert stone was flintknapped and hand-shaped using primitive tools and traditional techniques replicating North American knife artifacts from 9000 years ago.
- Blade is hafted into a Elk antler handle and secured using elk blackstrap sinew and a hide glue mixture. Handle is 5inches long and sits comfortably in the hand.
- Knife is suitable for decorative or historical display, but it was primarily crafted with utility in mind. This knife is meant to be used can be utilized for skinning and butchering game, processing plants, light woodworking, etc. A fully functional general utility knife with a lightly serrated cutting edge.
- Jay from Vision Quest Outdoors sources material from wild sites.
- His work is featured in museums.
- More important, the tools he makes are not founded on modern aesthetics, but rather functionality. These tools are made to be used, not just admired. Having said that, they are a marvel, very beautiful and can easily be put on display.
- You should support Jay and check out his Etsy shop and consider buying some of his tools, they really are very amazing.
- Jay will even take a custom order through Facebook or Etsy.
- You are encouraged to follow Jay on his KZfaq channel to get a better understanding of how these tools are crafted and really come to life.

People who are not familiar with the silence of the woods have no idea how small a noise could sound so loud. I have been in a tree stand and it got so very quiet ..... I heard this crashing sound & as I strained to see what it was it was these huge leaves falling to the ground. If I didn’t see it myself I wouldn’t have believe it. 😊

I loved camping with my Dad and my brother. While they set up camp, I took my salmon eggs and went fishing. I always caught enough fish for all of us to have supper. Hot coffee in the morning always woke me up. what a way to wake up. We went Winter camping because there was no bears around.

Hey, I too live in Ontario Canada. Anyone questioning the burning of natural dead trees that you use, come visit Algonquin provincial park and see how thick the canopy is and how many dead trees clutter the forest. We have soooooo many trees and forests that are protected. Also want to say I enjoy your videos.

I understand how difficult that hike was. I don't think many other viewers do. I did a similar trip this past Feb. 12k foot elevation in the Colorado backcountry, 8 foot snowbase with a 50lb sled but we just camped in a tent for 4 days. It was a trip of a lifetime but one of the most difficult things I've ever done. Thank you for all your hard work.

In the part where you're talking about butchering & eating or being grossed out for a bit. The first elk I learned to clean with my dad, the smell of bull elk is still in my head. Even 7 harvests later, I can smell it. Only thing that overrides that is tossing fresh backstrap on the fire while my dad finished. I'm with Jeremy, all birds/fowl stink to high heaven. The smell of ducks is what keeps me from eating them today. What an awesome trip! Thank you for sharing your experience!

Im with you on stewing meat at camp. Sometimes a roasted piece of meat tastes great but , being able to just go over to the stew pot and scooping out a cup of stew is awesome. Especially in winter. You get everything in one cup. Meat, veggies, flavor, water. And stew helps you warm up quicker and stay warm longer. Also when you guys were talking about the noises in the woods. I remember the first time i went camping in the Adirondacks , i headed to the outhouse at night and one of my friends said "you want me to come with you?" I said "nah im a big boy i dont need you to hold my hand". I got 50 yards from camp and heard something in the bushes. So i stopped. Then i heard it again and in my mind it sounded like a bear pushing down trees. I ran back to camp and told my friend to grab a gun and the spotlight and stand guard while i used the outhouse. While i was in the outhouse i heard the sounds again and i heard my friend say "what the hell is that!! " Then a few minutes later i heard him laughing. When i got out he said" theres your bear" and shined the light on some berry bushes. There were two cotton tail rabbits hopping around eating berries from the leaves on the ground. 😁 For the rest of the trip everytime someone used the out house we would say "watch out for the killer rabbits, they might chew your toe off" lol

Cutting meat and drooling at the same time... that took a long time for me too. I think it took a dozen dear shot butchered & eaten before the clinging smell didn't get to me. however the people that hunted, but took no part in the meat cutting did not have this "problem" something about the smell binding the death trauma to your memories . visitors that showed up just ate with a smile ... It mind-as well have bin wrapped in styrofoam and suranwrap for it's saintliness . These days I just R.I.P the guts out slice & spit the hart and liver an toast it golden brown on sight ... I cant eat it fast enough. I started fishing at 4 years old so I've bin over fish for to long to remember ... unless I'm doing a large batch of salmon mostly canning or smoking & canning ( as in 70 plus 500ml jars )... then I'm polluted for a few weeks. Guys get your kids out early before they gain judgemental preconceptions about what is fit to eat or not. If you eat meat ...say I eat meat ! then kill it .butcher it. cook it. all by your self then eat it ! It's very honest that way. are there emotional issues ? absolutely ! deal with it. get over it . it will pass , and you will still have your compassion.and it will teach you more about life than you could think to ask for. Jared

Glad To hear I'm not alone in getting over that smell. Love hunting and raising my own meat but yah that smell still gets me a little, especially in meat i raise. I think it should me mandatory to kill your meat if you"re gonna eat meat.

A hot tent on ice sounds sketchy
@OneWildcrafter
@OneWildcrafter 6 жыл бұрын
It sounds sketchy, but if you do it right you really minimize the problems. Lay in a floor of boughs to insulate you and the stove from the ice. Where we were there was about 20" of ice so... there was no chance that we were going through. I heated up a rock white hot one time and i couldn't even get THAT to melt all the way through the ice.

Was there also a thin layer of foil that I saw under the stove to help reduce the amount of heat directly hitting the ice under it? Or maybe I am wrong I dont know.

Including that Q&A was cool. Especially appreciated hearing that the fear of wild animals is overblown. Be smart, but don’t let things prevent ya from getting out into the wilds! Realizing that the risk is pretty low was a major thing for me to get over to be able to do deep woods wilderness camping. I lold at the part where you guys talk about how big a mouse can sound at night, it’s so true. Jeremy’s right though that you can learn to distinguish sounds the more you go out and pay attention. Same goes for being able to identify bear paths and predator tracks etc. Be aware of surroundings and use common sense and you should be fine. Animals are definitely more scared of than a lot of folks realize and they keep their distance the majority of the time.
