Winter van life Scotland | Cairngorms

Following our previous trip to Glencoe, we headed to the Cairngorms national park in our VW California camper van on the east of the Scottish highlands.
we decided to stay on campsites here due to lack of planning, numerous wild camp park ups now being clamped down and the impending bad weather forecast.
Starting with a night at Glenmore campsite on Loch Morlich, just outside Aviemore, to Dalraddy holiday park which is situated on the Dalraddy and Alvie estate.
Both campsites are brilliant options which suit a wide range of different types of camping people with lots of activities on the door step of both locations.
We spent new year in Dalraddy which is beautiful, despite the days of rain we experienced.
Despite new Covid 19 restrictions, we managed to visit the beautiful city of Berlin for their Christmas markets.
Of course, the Gluhwein and Bratwurst were the main reason to visit but you can't visit the capital of Germany without visiting key historic locations such as the Berlin wall (East side gallery), Holocaust memorial, checkpoint Charlie and the stunning architecture.
Berlin has numerous Christmas markets and we managed to visit around 6 of them but Alexanderplatz has to be our favourite! It's huge, the choice of food and drinks is amazing and the atmosphere was vert festive, despite everyone having to produce covid passports and wear FFP2 face masks.

Yes we did comment, we have the same trouble and often comments just disappear. KZfaq’s system is a bit pants on them. Enjoyed the video and the food. Sad to see the dog getting old. They bring such joy through their lives and it’s always hard when they begin to lose their health. 👍. Hopefully KZfaq will let this comment be seen. Thanks for the plug 👍

There you are!! 😁 Poor Oscar is getting old, fast but, we know he’s lived a full life as we rescued him 8 years ago and he’s been climbing mountains and swimming in lakes all of that time. Than you both for watching 🙏🏼

One very special you tube channel !! Always enjoy watching and listening to you Alan and Sarah,has to be my favourite channel. You did say you were reflecting on what you had done during 2021, I am reflecting on doing as many wonderful adventurous trips as both of you. 👍 Glad to see Sarah is getting better.

Both sites are amazing! Glenmore is easily the most picturesque as it’s on a Loch at the foot of the Cairngorm massif but Dalraddy has its own unique charm too. They’re only 20 minutes apart so why not try both 😁

Hi, we had a 7.5m motor home we lived in for 4 years. We have now ditched it for an Ocean. The main reason is flexibility. If you just want a vehicle to have holidays in then consider a motor home but if like us you also want to go for a quick overnight trip then stick with the California. Go down the shops etc We found loads of cities and places in Europe we couldn’t get to with a motor home and needed to cycle in. Plus all motor homes are rubbish to drive. But you need to work out what you want the vehicle for. Don’t get rid just because of a couple of rubbish nights in a Scottish winter against the advantage of a cali the other 360 days. When the weather looks dodgy then go to a hotel for the night. At the end of the day the biggest difference is a shower.

The ‘hair’ is lichen, a sign of clean air. I was on the same pitch as you at Glenmore for my 60th, love that site. I stayed at Dalraddy but the top area was closed so I was in with the static caravans and didn’t like that much. I went to Oakwood for Christmas at the north end of Aviemore. You saw my video on the Cali page.

Oscar doing a dump in the vehicle didn’t give you any grief at all. Suggestion- rent a bigger van before you change as yours would be so easy to fit in most places. Nice one guys. Laughed out loud when you said no one had asked about the stove 😅 Making Sylw cry when you were talking about your Oscar. He is a beauty. Bless him. Our eldest dog is nearly 9 yo (Staff - Rocko) We don't take him on many of the long treks tbh. Aslong, as he has one of the others with him. He will just sleep and chill. If he was on his own, we would come back to carnage! 😅 Look forward to the next! 👍

We rescued Oscar nearly 8 years ago and they estimated he’s at least 4 years old so he’s doing well considering he’s approximately 12 years old 😍 I love a staffy! Had a red one years ago. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼

Stayed very near there back in 2020 when we went to Ben Macdui, was through the heat of covid and everywhere we could eat in aviemore were all full haha. Lovely area though, great scenery in every direction. Really enjoyed the video, very well shot and you two always crack me up 🤣🤣🤣. Keep it up, one of my new favourite channels. 👍🏻🏔

Love the Cairngorms love Scotland full stop. Fully understand your Van dilemma it’s an ongoing debate for most van owners. We have a California, we’d like more space, we’re 2 + 2 dogs but weighing up pros and cons for us the flexibility of the smaller van is key so we are staying with what we have. Hugs to Oscar.

Had four transporters over the years, went to a crafter and never looked back. Mainly for security of mountain bikes inside the van but the space is great and the MWB isn’t too big for day to day driving 👍

i went from t5 to auto sleeper boxer , and i genuinely found there was less room that the t5 , being dead honest , which is why after selling it 6 months ago i now have a 6.1 on my drive , so many reasons but biggest of all was the larger van was o much more hassle to park, drive and travel in , only my thoughts but am so happy with my new ocean ive come back to the real way of travelling :)

The clever design of the VW’s, especially the California is impossible to beat. One thing we want is the solid high roof. In bad weather, we have no head height without popping up the roof but there’s pros and cons to everything I guess. Thanks for checking in 🙏🏼

Great vid. It is a dilemma that's for sure, the van change.We are actually considering an upscale from our T5 to something bigger. In fact, we are hiring a bigger one in Feb for a mini trip around the lake district, which we will document and discuss on our channel as soon as we can. There are definitely pros and cons! It’s down to you and a n other that we’ve bought a gopro & are busy practicing ready for Cali delivery ( & yes, we watched originally because of the Cali , but I guess we’ll keep on watching even if you downgrade 🤦🏻‍♂️😂 ) I reckon you need a bigger van for all Alans jackets & hats… Kelpies will be our first trip 🤞 I never cry except talking about the Oscar situation. Another great trip and video. Don’t blame you looking at a bigger van. I find it just the right size for 1 lol. Bloody hell guys, you ain't hanging around, you're putting us to shame with your trips. Oddly, we too are looking at selling in the coming weeks. We need to get a couple of scrapes painted before hand so it has kind of delayed us in getting it on the market. Everyone seems to be getting larger vans now, have you seen Bus and Beyond? I'd like just one of their vans TBH! Definitely a LWB Crafter for us and we will be doing the conversion ourselves. I can't imagine a MWB will affect your driving experiance too much, just the running costs really. Ive driven the LWB and they're a pleasure to drive. Anyway, happy camping guys.

😆😆 plenty more to come too! If lockdowns taught us anything, it’s to see the world. I used to drive a LWB sprinter years ago and loved it too. It’s not definite but it’s definitely a consideration. Summer camping in a small van is perfect as you can live outside too but we enjoy cold weather camping which can sometimes mean storms etc so, we’re currently weighing up the options. @@Professionalmoochers she certainly combined well with the van a few weeks ago on a 12 hour trip back from the French Alps. Hardly had a peep out of her the whole trip. BTW I’ve just looked at your video on the awning shade. Spot on. I need one of those.

Hey just in response to changing from a California up to the VW krafter size. I would recommend try before you buy there is a company called Roadsurfer and you can rent them allover Europe have a go then you will know

Hi mate, renting is something we were considering. Space in the Cali is obviously a bit easier since we lost our chocolate legend so I think we’re going to see how we get on this winter and make a decision from there 👍🏼

My neighbour went from a T5 to a LWB fiat Ducato, they have had it nearly 2 years but have ordered a VW 6.1 Ocean awaiting build. They miss the flexibility of general use they said . It’s actually them who talked me into ordering a 6.1 . To me it’s about a good return when selling too !

Yeh resale is important and with a California, especially during the last 2 years it’s crazy! We both have a car so day to day, a van isn’t needed so it’s a tough decision whether we move on or not because the transporter/California is an amazing unit! We had a T4 previously and that was brilliant too. Thanks for watching 👍🏼

Great vid guys 👍, we are 50/50 should we change to a larger van . We don’t tend to do winter camping though, we are wimps and do hotels. be nice to have the space for long distance travels to Europe . YNWA

Thank you 😁 We never have an issue in the warmer/drier months as you can live outside the van to an extent. It’s just sleeping, cooking, standing up etc when there’s a bad storm. We’ll happily camp 1000m up on an exposed mountain road in a winter storm but the poptop limits your experiences. It may never happen as we love this van but, who knows. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
