Cool stuff ! I am fascinated by the breathold training and believe it is super important - good for you for taking that on. I really think it will help your confidence tremendously in heavier waves. I didn't start really seriously surfing until I was 18 or 19. But, I was a top level competitive swimmer from age 7 up into my 1st years in college (I had a scholarship to swim until I burned out on it). And I found that I had a real advantage when I started surfing bigger waves because I already could swim almost 75 yds underwater on one breath and once dove to the bottom in 50+ ft of water and back up with no fins in the Bahamas - Had to grab a handful of sand to win 20 bucks from my dad, lol. Anyway, I agree with the commenter below that mentioned swimming laps underwater. It helps because you have to find that balance between swimming *relaxed* so as not to burn unnecessary oxygen but still swimming to make progress. Only time I ever got freaked out was in the late 70s on an 8-10 ft day on the Outer Banks of NC - I was wearing what we used to call a farmer john wetsuit, which is basically a full suit on the legs with a tank top above. I ate it on a big one and the wetsuit filled up like a water balloon while I took a few on the head. I NEVER wore a farmer john again ! Looking forward to seeing you rip on the CT this year, Lakey ! Have you thought about spending time at a Surf Ranch to work on wave crest tricks? I am thinking of the vast array of skateboard tricks that could be added to the surf world. A surf ranch supplies endless perfect curls to practice tricks. What are your thoughts about changing the surfing game to be more aerial? Adding foot straps would completely change the possibilities of what could be done on a surfboard. Love to get your insights.
