Olivia Towers shows you her winter routine in the yard!
Of course, "riding" does not only mean "sitting on a horse" - there are a lot of tasks that come up when taking care of a horse, starting with the feeding and haying up at 06.30 in the morning, cleaning the stable, collecting the horse-poo on the field, grooming, and much more...
Olivia takes you around for a day to show you the basics of her winter yard routine which might always fluctuate a bit, and she also has some good advice for the wintertime.

We enjoyed making this one. I almost fell off the back of the quad when we filmed out in the field lol I learned a lot myself on how much work it takes to maintain a yard.

I wish I could come work for you Olivia! It's such a breath of fresh air to see riders actually participating in yard duties! Past riders that I've worked for have always expect their grooms to do everything, one lady I worked for was almost hesitant to give me a day off because they had to look after their own horses (there was only 5 at the time)

After enjoying many dream barn tours, it was refreshing to see yours! We take care of our horses in Colorado and experience much of the mud, ice, freezing temperatures, hot mash, etc., and truly enjoyed your down to earth attitude. Bravo!

Since I'm a horse carer myself I really enjoyed this video. I wish we could provide that level of care for our horses. We are two people caring for about 50 horses (including about 12 lesson horses and the rest are horses of people who rent the stables.) We start at 7, feed till 8, turn out almost all of them until 9, muck out all the stables (mostly straw) until 11:30, feed again until 12, get the morning horses in, turn the afternoon horses out until about 13:30, sweep until 14:00, go home, fall into bed, repeat. No breakes, nothing. Fortunately my co-worker does the feeding in the evenings, otherwise I would have to come back at 17:30 again. It is really hard and we really wish for another co-worker but aparently there is not enough money.... Edit: and that is 6-sometimes 7 days a week. Since I am only 19 years old I sometimes REALLY wish I could just stay in bed🤣🤣

Sounds like heaven to me! I would work for lessons, haha! Honestly I would work just to be around the horses- I "volunteer" at my barn, and when I am not doing the therapy lessons I am basically providing free labour! As long as horses are involved I will do it, no matter how unpleasant or difficult... I want to learn as much as I can, and DO as much as I can, horses are my happy place and I hope to at least make a living being near them/caring for them...

I enjoyed this video! ❣️ Definitely shows the dedication horses require. I live in the states, in a very cold one and I’ve never really seen a horse turned out with leg wraps on. I’m curious what’s the reason behind yours 😊 I might give it a try! Thank you for sharing with us!

I work at a little riding school (Iam 16) we start at 9 but I head out the house at 7:40 am the first thing we do is feed and turnout, there are 18 horses to 3 of us, then we start to muck out I can do 7 to 4 stables a day it just depends what the other staff are doing I do most of my mucking out in the morning but for ponies that go out at night I do there boxes in the afternoon, at around 12 the horses are brought in and washed of and put back to bed and then we feed lunch, after that at about 1:30 - 2 to maybe half 3 I have my lunch horses that go out in the afternoon are put out before hand and then Finnish of my chores after that I sweep like my life depends on it. and then sit a watch the children ride whilst I do a general tidy up around the yards then the afternoon horses come in get washed off and put back to bed, and then hard feed is fed hay is fed water is done And we do one last clean up ponies are turned out and we lock up at 6 0 clock and Iam home for 7 x

Why do you keep your horses in a stall all winter? What's wrong with turning them out?
@danielleparkinson6828
@danielleparkinson6828 4 жыл бұрын
I know this is a late reply but its not great to have horses out in muddy paddocks all the time, I know some people don't have the luxury of stables (I don't) but if kept in wet conditions they can develop some awful mud fever, they can slip much easier and with how delicate horses are they'll injure themselves. Also the quality of the paddock can deteriorate VERY quickly meaning they'll have no feed anyway. Feeding out to a muddy paddock is horrible, most hay or baleage with end up trampled into the ground sadly so you end up wasting money. Winter and horses don't tend to go together ahaha
@lozzab102
@lozzab102 4 жыл бұрын
@@danielleparkinson6828 most horses do fine tho, mud is usually has good nutrients for horses to roll around in. Personally I've known many yards who keep their horses turned out 247 and none of the horses have a problem, especially I'd you keep a blanket off of them too. Better than being locked up in a box most of your life with barely any room, enough to make anyone go crazy, especially an extremely sociable herd animal like a horse. Especially since horses are more prone to accidents in stalls, such as getting their halters stuck and suffocating themselves or just simply rolling and getting casted which is also fatal. Idk I guess it's just an opinion but I never see a reason why horses should be locked up in stalls
@vikingsong2068
@vikingsong2068 2 жыл бұрын
Are you from the UK or Ireland? Keeping horses in muddy fields 24/7 is a recipe for disaster. There is nothing wrong with horses being turned out during the day and then stabled of a night.
@lozzab102
@lozzab102 2 жыл бұрын
@@vikingsong2068 I indeed am. Mud is very good for a horses coat if that's what you're worried about. If you're talking about an extremely muddy pasfure tben a horse shouldn't be in there in the first place
