Winterizing Perkins 4.108 Diesel

The video demonstrates part of the winterization process of a Perkins 4.108 aboard our Cape Dory 36. It includes running the engine using a hose and bucket to heat the engine oil to ease the oil change process (which I'll include in another video), cycling antifreeze through the cooling system, and removing the raw water impeller.

I own a perkins 4236 and I live in a warm climate yet the winter is a little cold without snow ,I did not know that I need to change the oil based on hourly schedule and instead I thought every 3000 kilometers but I found the oil loses it's thickness before that which made me change it early at about 30 or 40 hours of run time ,

mo abdulhamid I drained the oil, changed the filter, and added new oil.

Where is the garden hose attached to on the engine ?

The garden hose is the freshwater supply for the bucket, and it comes from a spigot in the boatyard. The only hose to the engine is the clear hose you see drawing from the bucket. Does that answer your question?

79cd36 Thanks for your reply. Thanks for putting this online. However the hardest part of engine maintenance is trying to find and identify the parts. It is the main reason the old printed manuals with photos were so hard to use.

mo abdulhamid I change the engine oil every 50 hrs. If the engine called for a different viscosity oil during cold weather, then yes, I'd change it and refill with the appropriate winter oil.

Good vid... well presented. Just curious....where are you located? Is it common practice to release coolant (will assume glycol) on to the ground in this fashion? I would think that coolant is not the best thing in the environment....I do know they keep saying it is dangerous to wildlife. I’m no greenie by any means but I just don’t think spewing 4 gallons of coolant out onto the ground is a smart thing to do.

Ian Adkins no it was a bad idea. It is non-toxic, but I should have contained it - and I do/have. This was a rush job and I’d forgotten my reclaim bucket. Not that it makes it right, but all the anti freeze in winterized boats gets spewed directly into the water during fall commissioning when the engine is started for the first time. In many boats, that’s at least two to three gallons and maybe more in larger motor vessels. Not a defense. I was wrong to rush. I should have headed back home for my forgotten gear.

Tim, Glad the video was helpful. My winterizing checklist is in my head, sorry, but here goes: Perkins has a closed cooling system, so winterizing the engine includes what you saw in the video (plus draining the raw water strainer). Winterizing the rest of the boat's systems includes draining all freshwater tanks and then drawing -50 non-toxic antifreeze through the entire system until I get full strength at each faucet (galley and head). No water heater aboard, so I don't fuss with that. When we DID have the water heater, however, I drained it and then pulled some antifreeze through it. Head and holding tank get flushed and pumped out prior to haul out. I then dump -50 antifreeze into the toilet bowl and flush it through the head and into the holding tank. Washdown pump gets disconnected at the intake thru hull and I run -50 through it until it comes out at the deck fitting. Since the galley foot pump draws from the same thru hull, I pump it until I get antifreeze through it at the sink. I also pump the bilge dry and then pour a bit of -50 into the bilge and run it through the bilge pumps. Finally, I work all of the seacocks through full rotation in both directions to allow any trapped water to drain out. If you have an air conditioning system, you'd have to be sure to winterize it, too, which I've done aboard the trawler quite simply. Anyway, I think that covers it. Cheers.
