WinWing always modify their HOTAS as to give them more buttons. Pretty much everything is a 5 way hat switch. While its not exactly realistic it is great if you own multiple modules. The JF 17 has so many HOTAS buttons its insane and the extra switches are great.

The problem with what WinWing does is they add so many extra buttons that they 1) degrade the quality of the primary features in the first place and 2) the extra controls are hard to either access or distinguish from each other. I speak as an owner who has an F-16EX grip and this is certainly the case. We have to consider that the base design for these HOTAS systems were designed through millions of dollars of engineering to ensure the real pilot doesn't mistake any two distinct controls; and that the real pilot is sure they did or did not activate a control. Needing to confirm the state of the jet/avionics due to confusion is bad enough of a time delay, and far worse is not even realizing you did change something and finding out later. I guess because we are simmers we don't really care -- says WinWing. I own and appreciate the F-16EX grip need for the AH-64D TEDAC, but I really dislike that the DMS and TMS switch directions are considerably worse in terms of feedback compared to Thrustmaster. I'd happily lose the push functionality for that switch to feel more like Thrustmasters. And even though DMS feels fine on it, that push can be dropped too. The A-10C and F-16C HOTAS uses those two switches so often, they need to feel prestine in their primary operation. I would love to switch my non-F/A-18/F-15 stick (Boeing) to another offering, but Thrustmaster's (which I also own) just has two few buttons; Virpil Constellation Alpha Prime just doesn't quite place the switches right and may have a button or two shy; VKB Gunfighter IV Ultimate has less buttons with perhaps an even worse than Virpil CA layout.

Good comprehensive review! The extra hats on the throttle (uncage) and stick (MSL step) are there for a particular reason other than just extra buttons. The hat on the Range knob / Uncage button is there because of the (DCS) JF-17. The Jeff uses the same throttle as the F-16, but has a 4-way hat where the Range-knob sits on the F-16 throttle. The JF-17 can basically be seen as a cheap discount version of the F-16 block 60, featuring Chinese and Russian technology, but certain Western design sensibilities gleaned from the F-16s used by Pakistan, as it was essentially tailor made for the Pakistani Air Force. On the stick the MSL step-button is replaced by a hat, because russian aircraft (Ka-50, Su-35, Su-57) have a hat-switch there. If you get the stick with the add-on cluster, you essentially get a stick that can double both as an F-16C, A-10C stick ánd a Ka-50, Su-35, Su-57 stick. The pinkle paddle also has an axis (as per russian style wheel brake levers) and the add-on cluster features an analog mini-stick where the TDC/RDR-slew cursors is positioned on russian aircraft (instead of on the throttle). The F-16EX “Full Metal” version allows you to have both mimic both western and eastern control schemes. winwingsim.com/mobileview/goods-details.html?id=374&sku_id=21 Looking forward to the Thrustmaster Viper TQS review and I’m curious to see how you feel it compares with the Winwing throttle.

I just set up my WinWing viper a week ago and I appreciate the video on it. Spot on with the setup and the application. The only thing I did differently is I downloaded a lua file for the key mapping. This allowed me to make my own mods and keep the changes. Looking forward to your review on the thrustmaster viper hotas. The throttle bracket looks more robust than the WinWing but there are fewer buttons to program. Keep up the good work.

Happy to see that Winwing hooked you up Mover. Got the full Hornet setup with Ddi's and all (for vr). Have to say I love it. Also saw the Thrustmaster new Viper throttle but that's a whole lot of plastic for a whole lot of money. Just less sturdy at a too steep price point.

Thanks for the review. I own the same throttle and I was wondering about one thing I run into. When in DGFT mode, you can press the "cursor enable" switch on the throttle to slave the AIM9 seeker to the JHMCS. But pressing also makes a slight movement on it which enables "ACM slewable" mode which then auto-locks the hostile and the stealthiness is gone. Is there any way to prevent that? Or was it just the same in the real jet?

Great little review. I am still trying to get the MSFFB settings down correct, I will try your settings. The extra buttons have helped for the “sim world”, I use the two hidden buttons in the throttle grip for “Ready PreContact” and recenter my VR headset. I use the funny four way switch for the NWS as a VR zoom. I have not been a fan of the DCS F-16, but with this setup it is growing on me.

I am still rocking a vintage Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS system. I've velcro'ed them both to very heavy, solid Sound Anchors speaker stands which I found at a thrift store. Each stand is about 50 pounds so it's got a solid feel for something that isn't bolted down. This Winwing setup will be what finally replaces it. The Cougar was great in its time but it is definitely "legacy hardware" at this point and it's become jittery to the point of unusability at least when using it in Elite: Dangerous, and that's a shame because I had everything mapped out so well that I could do almost literally everything in the game without having to touch the keyboard, which is the whole POINT of HOTAS.

There is no comparison between TM and WW throttles. I have both and the WW gear is superior in every way. I loved the Cougar and the Warthog but from construction quality to materials/components to quality to versatility to accuracy WW is better. Software of both is powerful, not easy to use, and not really required except for calibration and advanced configuration. That's not a surprise really. WW gear is designed and built 20+ years later.

@@grifnizzle7197 Thanks. I understand they are two different companies. Originally, the RS FSSB (there were 2 levels - R2 & R3 - like now) was only a replacement part of the Cougar gimbles when I bought mine. Yeah, a long time ago. I went to RS' website and, boy howdy, have they come a long way. I understand why Striker likes his. Excellent kit, maybe the best nonprofessional gear available. Price is a little high but that's expected from top notch gear. I would expect RS FSSB to be superior from my experiences a long ago. WW MFFSB is definitely different in function and likely slightly less precise but whether the difference is sufficient to justify the price difference is going to be very individual. That doesn't exactly answer your question. I don't think you would go wrong with either.

@@mururoa7024 Either injection molded or printed is my guess. It has solid feeling with a light texture that I like better than the smooth metal finish on the Cougar. It's not a strict replica but IMHO is superior for sims. The extra functionality from switches, hats, and axes don't detract from full F-16 function but enhances it for sim-isms. I loved the Cogar and FSSB but the WW is as good or better in every way.

I just bought the HOTAS MAX from WinWing with the f/a-18 throttle and the f-16 stick but with the normal stick base. The stickbase was in my opinion the most impressive by how smoothe the movement is compared to the virpil base i had before, also just the quality of everthing is impressive. There is only a few tiny things i would say they could do better at including the guides to set thing up like the afterburner detent. With the afterburner detent its actually really easy when explained correctly but i had to google for about 20-30 minutes to find a good explanation on reddit.

When comparing the WW Orion 2 F16 Throttle to the new Thrustmaster one, make sure to take into account, that WW Orion 2 Throttle Base also allows to switch from the F16 Throttle grip to the WW FA18 Throttle grip if you have it. So the WW Orion 2 is not a unambiguous design, so WW could build upon the base as it has now with the F15E Throttle grips and more to come in the future, I'm sure

I am having trouble finding a setting I can be consistent and precise with. The Full Realistic set up was terribly hard to play, way too sensitive, especially in a Lefthand roll. Fair and dead on review. I've had the full WinWing F-16EX since it was released and got one of the first MFSSBs released. I still have one of the first Thrustmaster Cougars released as well as Real Simulator's FSSB. The WinWing setup is light years ahead of the Cougar and Warthog (a friend has it now). A force sensing stick for the Viper just feels right. I never flew the Viper but have ~11,000 hours on the A320 and 330. The 'bus stick is similar to the MFSSB but not really. It has more motion than the actual Viper, the Cougar's FSSB, or MFSSB (only movement was the loose connection of the stick to the base that has plagued T'master since Cougar on day 1). I'd prefer less motion on the FSSB but it's more than good enough. I completely agree that finding the right force/movement setting is a chore. I'm still not completely satisfied. I wasn't sure how the stick would feel flying non-Viper A/C in DCS or FS but it does well enough. Strangely, even helos are OK though a bit weird with DCS' silly trimmer kludge. Simapppro is powerful but at the same time I find very little use for it since DCS and FS both have their own mapping. Calibration and switching between axis and switch mode on some of the hats can be very useful. The extra buttons, axes, and switches do help a lot bridging the sim/real gap we can never escape with desktop sims. They're even more useful for those of us who use VR.

@regprewitt7637
@regprewitt7637 9 ай бұрын
Realize that anything I say about RS will be based on the better of the two versions of FSSB when they were originally released. I haven’t touched their new offerings or know if there is any difference from the original. I do have a friend from back in those days who built an amazing sim pit who uses late model RS. He’s very happy with FSSB. If Striker says it’s good gear, then it is. My only concern would be if FSSB requires a Cougar or Warthog grip. The connection of both (and the F/A-18 grip) is pot metal and is subject to breakage. I broke the Cougar grip on my FSSB. It snapped off. It is not designed for the forces imposed on a static stick. They are also prone to switch problems. When I gave my well cared for, but very old and used, Warthog to my friend I also sent the pile of pots and switch replacement parts I brought with me when we moved to Ecuador. I never needed to replace anything but I also don’t personally know anybody who has one who hasn’t had failures of pots and/or switches. The Warthog throttles really needs the mini stick replacement mod too. Used with any WW throttle grip(s) and Orion 2 base, I think you would have an excellent setup. I’d see if a WW F-16, or better still F-16EX, is compatible with RS FSSB. That’s a better solution because the WW stick is built much better. That is important IMHO due to the higher amount of force you will put on the FSSB than the WW MFSSB.

The sticks itself are better from winwing, all metal with better switches. I have not tried the virpil throttle but i have the TM warthog and the Orion2 Throttle Base 10th Anniversary Limited Version and here the winner is TM cause all buttons and switches are of much higher quality (real tactil feel to them) and it is made of metal so i am using it for the A-10. I have similar issues with the man range knob on the throttle. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but I hate the way Winwing did it versus TM Cougar/Viper/real TQS. I think it's because 4ways + push are always kind of a mess, specifically the push part. And the range rotary seems much harder to manipulate without accidentally hitting one of the 4ways. I dig what WW does with the swappable throttles, and I think the TM seems rather overpriced, but between the man range knob and the slap switch I'm honestly a bit torn

Great Idea but i think these have been out for about a year now and still not seen anyone with wear and tear issues. I know for a fact that WinWing only use high quality kit i heard an interbiew with thier USA salwes manager and he sid they cancelled suppliers contracts on the first F-18 and original orion Throttle base after initial review showed up problems with a couple of the switches. instead of going to the supplier and saying this switch needs to be better! They just cancelled the contract with them and found a supplier with much better quality. He said we aim for the best quality we can, we want a great reputation not a mediocre one. WinWing and Virpil as well as VKB are just knocking it out the park with the quality and price of kit these days and i think Thrustmaster got lazy and still think they are the best when they actually got surpassed about 3 years ago by a long way. I've heard reviews complaining that the stick only senses force once you hit the maximum bounds of stick displacement, but the reviewers were obviously not former Viper drivers. Can you please expand a bit on setting up the fssb correctly? This has been the main problem most people seem to have. Apparently there is an issue with the center, in that it first moves a tiny bit, then there is a delay in the stroke before it hands over to force. If you managed to set it up without this transition problem, I think the community would love to hear!

Can you give us any update regarding durability? Is everything working as new? Or are there any issues?

I own this snce release and it's amazing in DCS. The new Thrustmaster one is like a kids toy compared the WinWing version (and more expensive)

Its freeware. Should check it out. Dynamic campaign engine, ATC, AWACS. The Benchmarksims community work hard only for realism. Truly is a "textbook sim"

Calling it Falcon is disrespectful…He would only play it if they change the name to BMS Viper 😎
