Hey, Wire Benders here's a super simple cross to make with wire. Sells well and makes a great gift also. Try this one and I'll put up a few more a little more difficult and even more rewarding when you make them. Work your way up to the crucifix. You give very good instructions and your voice is so calming. 5 years ago when I first started learning wire wrapping, I found it very difficult to get my cross (arms?) even until I figured out an easier way (for me) to do it. I don't know if this makes sense to you but I'm going to tell you how I did it. I started out the same way you did by folding my wire in half but instead of bending 1-wire out to the right and the other to the left, I bent both of them at a 90-degree angle and then folded them back under itself and then at the intersection of the cross, I bent both of them in a 90-degree angle upward. The last step before making a bail is to unfold the arms of the cross outward to each side and slightly squeeze everything in place with pliers. I finished it off by making a bail. I used round wire when I made mine so it was easy to do it using my method. I don't know how it would work with square wire because I haven't done that. Anyway, I don't know if I'm explaining it very well but it really, really, helped me get my cross perfectly even. It made a huge difference in in my end results and it was much easier (again... for ME). Btw, you do ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL WIRE WORK❤️❤️❤️... And I am in NO WAY criticizing your method. I just wanted to share my method with you because it worked best for me. Thanks so much for taking the time to do these tutorials. What was the height of the cross, the width of the arms, and how far did you go up before making the arms? No one seems to share those bits besides the height. This is a nice video quick and to the point. I’ve made two crosses recently and both had short arms 😖 thanks for sharing!

How far it is the preferred wire for wire benders. Hard wire is usually used for things such as stick pins. I prefer 20 21 18 gauge. 21 being the best gauge for name charms.

I hope you don't mind my answering your question also. When I first started out with sterling silver, I started with 20 gauge dead soft wire. But as I began to learn the feel of it and started making ear wires, I would either get the 20 gauge in half hard or hard (if I could find hard) for making ear wires. Dead soft wire can be work hardened by hammering or in a tumbler and it doesn't need to be an expensive tumbler. I have an expensive dual barrel tumbler but I actually use one of those small Discover tumblers that came with rock samples for rock tumbling and a little bit of stainless steel shot. Anyway, the wire gauge and the wire temper you need really depends on what you plan to do with it. If you are going to be making something that is going to require an excessive amount of bending, twisting, and shaping, you might be better off to get dead soft because as you bend and shape, it will work harden but if you overwork harden it, it can become brittle and break. Again, it really depends on what you plan to make with it. Deciding what kind of wire I needed was the most difficult thing for me to figure out when I first started making wire jewelry five years ago. Rio Grande's customer service department was really helpful in describing the hardness of the wire compared to the German wire I had been using before. I also bought small amounts of various gauges/tempered wire just so I could test it out and know how it behaves when working with it. Best wishes. I hope you make lots of beautiful jewelry!🙂

Rio Grande sells Merlin wire by the pound. "Polished brass" its soft BUT for practice it will do fine just be crisp in your folds and bends.
