Alan Kay discusses one of the best multiple-use essential tools you can have: the wire saw.
He provides the reasons why you should have one with you at all times and its purpose. Alan also explains the differences between wire saws, how to use use them properly, and why you want to use a specific type that won't tangle and can cut through bone, wood, and PVC pipe.

Back in the 80’s I carried one of these inside the draw cord of my SAS smock for evasion. They will cut through non hardened steel (use slowly) and we were told they were used by surgeons for cutting bone. The great thing about these today is you can carry them on a plane

I used to do HVAC and plumbing, these saws are a lifesaver when trying to cut PVC in a tight spot and they will cut like a hot knife through butter. Never thought of using them in the outdoors or much less in a survival situation, thanks for posting this, I must have about three in the garage. Definitely need to get ones with barrel swivels, didn’t even know they had them.

That's actually quite relevant: the fact that wire saws will cut through multiple materials (as mentioned here) is considered one of the most widely-cited reasons for carrying them for survival in the first place.

If you've got a reasonably stout but flexible, right length bit of branch and you cut notches in each end, you can fashion a makeshift bow saw (also known as Swede saw, Finn saw or buck saw) using a wire saw. It does a better job of keeping the wire saw straight than holding it taught by hand and is less tiring to use. Calories are a commodity in survival. :) I'll be honest though. While it doesn't roll up like a wire saw, I find a hacksaw blade more durable and versatile.

I believe that the intention of the original rings is for you to put a stick through each ring to use as handles, but I guess the paracord could work for that too

@thopkins2271
@thopkins2271 3 жыл бұрын
@@lazerusmfh Certainly. They’re not a sustainable or long term solution. But the reality is in the overwhelming majority of instances survival situations are a few days? A week? It’s not a replacement for a saw when you’re going deep. But as an item that can fit in a very small kit that never leaves your day pack? They make some manner of sense, even if they’re significantly worse than the chainsaw style or folding hand saws(which I agree that they are much worse.) For nearly zero weight penalty, I can stick one of these in my Outdoor Research Backcountry organizer that comes with me on every hike, every hunt, and every fishing trip anywhere I’ve been in the world. From Venezuela and Brazil, to New Mexico, to Alaska I take a kit that essentially covers most of my survival bases as well as animal processing/headlamp, repair, and so forth....and this goes in it with almost negligible size and weight.

I like both. A wire saw is more convenient for some smaller tasks, like cutting a piece of pvc. But for camping or outdoor work, a handheld chainsaw blade is much better. So I keep both.
@inspired4more

I HATE the wire saw! Has anyone else ever had one break in the middle of a semi-decent size log and had the HOT wire spring back and wrap around your hand?? That sh*t ain’t no joke! I picked up a pocket chainsaw on a whim one time and will never use a wire saw again! It is a piece of an actual chain from a chainsaw but the teeth alternate directions every other tooth and it has really 3/4” nice nylon webbing pull loops. I bought 4 more after the first time I used it! I did try to make my own from an old chainsaw blade once. It DID work, however since it only cut on one stroke, it wasn’t as fast but is still better than those damn wire hand traps!
