Wire Wrapping for Jewelry Cords Ends

In this video, I will show you how to finish the ends of your cord when making jewelry. You will need 20 gauge wire, round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, flush cutter ( nippers ) clasps, chain, cords of your choice, assorted beads and jumprings.

Everything in this video was info I have been seeking. Wire wrapping cords presented in such a clear and thorough manner solved more than a few dilemmas for me. I have had all the components for a while, now I have a solid plan. Although not on this video I also plan to make clay end caps. And clay tassel toppers, definitely a winner. Once I move back into my home I plan to reward myself with several 'Clay Days'. Many of your techniques are certainly on my list. Thank you for sharing.

I have never considered making jewelry before, it looked entirely too complicated, but after watching several of your tutorials, I think I may give it a try! Thank you for opening up new possibilities for me in my retirement! I've always made everything, from furniture to fish ponds, but living in a spare bedroom with my daughter and her family has put a big crimp on my creative drive. I was looking for tutorials on polymer clay fairy garden accessories when I saw one of your tutorials pop up in my feed. I never thought of using the yarn for cording 😹 I have seen that and others like it that would make for great cording so next time I am at my Spotlight store I will have to pop back into the yarn section to check out what else they have that would make for great cording 🤗 thank you for sharing your way of making the ends it has given me so many ideas now 🤗🤗

Hi Patricia, I enjoy your videos so much. I am learning so much from them. You explain everything you do, your pace is great, and you have a very pleasant voice. I am finding that trying not to buy every tool I see is hard though, I have to budget myself. I made six of your Dragons eye pendants, my great granddaughter and her fourth grade classmates loved them. AWESOME--I USE MY WIRE STRAIGHTENERS WITH THE NYLON TO HOLD MY WIRE WHEN I AM TWISTING MY WIRE AND IT HOLDS BETTER FOR ME--I HAVE HAND PROBLEMS. HOPE THIS WILL HELP OTHERS. GOD BLESS

Thank you Mary, I'm fairly new to making videos, so the first few just has the volume that my Phone camera provided. I have edited my later video to bump up the volume as much as I can. It's good sound on the desktop, but I know- I-Pads are terrible for sound. This video has Closed Captioning, just hit the CC button to get a transcript of everything I said :)

I made a bail. in the shape of a tube that is "glued" on with liquid clay, and re-baked. Thank you for your kind words!

Thanks Kim, I don't really have a video on the dragonfly pendant, it was drawn on the baked clay and coloured with Prismacolor alcohol markers, then sealed with Kato liquid clay and my heat gun

Patricia this was most useful... one question if you don't mind, it's about the use of copper wire to make jewelry, does it make black marks on clothing, particular in the case of a pendant (wire wrapped) where it hangs over your clothing?

It hasn't been my experience that it will leave marks on clothing. Sometimes though, copper can leave marks on skin, particularly if one is sweating, and usually only if it is worn for a long time ( days - think copper rings ) The body's ph really affects whether it will turn green or not. Raising your ph by eating celery and other alkaline foods can lessen that effect.

That's a hard question for me, I make my jewellery to suit myself, so I make them a bit short, some like them longer. 18 or 20 inches would be a good place to start

was admiring your ring is it copper, wondered how you cope with the copper turning your skin green , do you cover copper in a sealant at all , Thank you for great tutorials , 🤗🤗

Thanks Penny, yes, it is copper, I had used a coated wire, but the coating has worn off- along with all the colour from the crystal. It does turn my finger green sometimes- I take that as a reminder to eat more alkaline foods, like celery.

Thanks for your tutorials they are great. you explain things very well. Just one question I have and is that I made some curved disks from polymer to make some earrings, I suppose they were about 2 mm thick, but they broke easily. have you any suggestions. I baked at the right temp for probably just over 30 mins. could they be too thin?

No, they are definitely not too thin. There is usually too reasons why clay will break after curing. First is the type of clay, SculpeyIII and Craftsmart clay is known to be quite brittle, so if that is what you were using, that may have been the problem. Secondly, and more commonly is that the piece was under baked. The only way to be sure of your oven's actual temperature is to use an oven thermometer, most ovens are very inaccurate. Also, if you are not preheating ( Which I rarely do ) you have to add more time to accommodate. That's one of the reasons I cure for an hour or more. Also, if you have ceramic tiles in the oven, they absorb the heat ( good thing ) but you need more time for that as well. For an example, my convection toaster oven needs to be set to 290F, so that it reaches the 275F that I need for Premo Clay. I have a large ceramic tile, and a firebrick in my oven, I always cover my work with an aluminum baking tin, and bake for 1 to 1/2 hours ( no preheat )

Thanks Patricia. I am using premo and on a ceramic tile. I also preheat to 130 - 150 Centrigrade using an oven thermometer (I must admit though once the temp has been reached and items put in I don't go back and check the thermometer during process) and I only bake for 1/2 hr so maybe that's where I need to make a change and bake for longer - I will try that. I always thought baking longer made it more brittle... (as with pastry LOL - I've had plenty of experiences with that !) I'm desperate to get it right because I want to try making those bracelets / bangles you make and I fear it will break given the usage.

Sounds like you just have to tweak the time. Baking longer will make pieces more 'bendy', therefore less likely to break - especially important for bracelets that need to be flexed as they go on and off. Good luck, I'm wishing you success!

The orange leaf pendant was made on my last video- Polymer Clay Leaf beads. The dragonfly pendant is drawn on the clay and coloured with alcohol ink markers.

Do some people find the copper reacts with their skin?

Some people do react, it may discolour or turn the skin green, Happens more with a ring or bracelet. My copper ring turns my finger a bit green, if I'm sweating mostly. It is not harmful in any way. I've never noticed a problem with using it for my findings or earrings, but Silver wire can be substituted for copper if you prefer

altho the video was helpful it would be nice to see the finished piece alone before you start the other and a clearer workspace would help make the video background less busy to better view the video
