I first stopped at Wirrulla in about 1984 or 85, travelling in a W series, Kenworth, with no sleeper cab on our way to Newcastle. We pulled up just down the road from the pub where there was a big parking spot and toilet named the thunder dome. I remember an enclosed building, similar to a school undercroft for shelter as well. That became a regular spot in the 90s if I was passing through with an oversize load.

I noticed The Thunderdome as such was no more on one of my trips after 2010, just a plain painted brown wall. It was certainly there in 2003. I guess that area is now the caravan park and they felt it needed a change of image. Sad, because it was one of those things that helped stick the town firmly in the memory. I took a short cut through Wirrulla en route to Coober Pedy back in 1993. I was in my Hyundai Excel, just took it easy and had a beaut days drive. They'd had rain a couple of weeks before and Sturt Pea was flowering very nicely in places along the way. Saved a lot of miles compared to going all the way to Port Augusta from Ceduna.

G'day Lester. You back from your UK trip yet? I was on a school bus tour in 2003, and we did from Kingoonya to Wirrula. It was pretty much sand track stuff as I recall ... lost any video I had back in the day. Kingoonya was a definite ghost town back then, so was surprised to see the pub in full swing when we drove through in 2015. Dunno if I'll get the chance to do that bit again. Never say never.

@@lauriekibblewhite Hi Laurie, we arrived in Albany Sunday afternoon. The first time I travelled the Nullabor was in 1967 with two friends. We fuelled up at Kingoonya on our way up to Alice. It was just on dusk and we took off from the bowser and missed a turn and did a lap of the horse track on the oval. Had a good laugh and took more notice of the wheeltracks after that. And now the main highway bypasses it which is sad really.
