Thanks for the video! Can you explain the access laws? Is it like Minnesota where once you're in the water you are good to go as long as you're below the highest water line?
@OlufsWaterview
@OlufsWaterview 4 жыл бұрын
Outdoor Bros good question. In WI it’s a little different. It’s legal to wade any water that is navigable (large enough to float a canoe) if you access it via public access. Wading here is defined as keeping your feet in the water (not high water line). But the rules say that if the water is too deep or dangerous to wade then you are allowed to get up on the bank and get back in the water as soon as the water is able to wade again.

This video is 3 years old and I can't believe this is the first time I stumbled across it! Very informative! I've been solely using Google maps for years and scouting similarly to how you do it. The dnr public access app is a game changer! My biggest fear is accessing a stream illegally and not knowing it. Seriously thanks a lot for putting this together! I'll be fishing some streams in the next couple of days and this saved me a lot of time figuring out some access points to fish some stretches I haven't fished yet. Tight lines!

Good luck to both of you! Small (0-10ft) streams can become pretty difficult to fish past mid June here so I'd look towards the mid to larger streams if you'll be around during the July-Sept timeframe. Either way you should be able to get out and have a good time.

@@OlufsWaterview it will be the end of July. We will be in the Belleville area if you have any recommendations!!
@OlufsWaterview
@OlufsWaterview Жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyt7177 there are a lot of streams in that area and west of there. Yeah, that time of year I'd stay away from smaller streams. Without getting too specific some streams to think about would be Gordon, Kittleson (can be difficult to wade), W. Branch Sugar River, Sugar River (might be too warm late July). Those I think are all within 20min of Belleville. Story creek is right there too but probably more of a hassle to fish than what you would get out. Drive west of Belleville and almost every stream you cross is going to be a trout stream. Go W/NW and you drive into the heart of the driftless. Anyways, look around on the mapping tool, also google "Wi TROUT tool" (maps specifically trout streams) and you'll have too many spots to choose from.

I'm pretty new to euro nymphing, is it effective on small spring creeks like these? What's the approach you guys take on euro nymphing driftless streams? Any response is greatly appreciated!
@OlufsWaterview
@OlufsWaterview 4 жыл бұрын
Sam Kim I don’t euro nymph myself but I know plenty of people do in the driftless and with a lot of success. I cant imagine the techniques are too much different here than anywhere else. Trout are trout, they eat the same and act the same pretty much everywhere. For ‘conventional’ nymphing I fish pools beneath riffles and deeper runs in colder months and like faster water in summer months often where I’ll use a dry dropper. Good luck out there

Nice video. I'm over in Illinois near Lake Michigan and when we think of driftless we think of Wisconsin. Thanks for sharing your adventures in Iowa. I think Ill try to make a trip over there this season. One off topic question. Do you shoot with a GoPro and do you use a chest mount or head mount for your shooting?
@OlufsWaterview
@OlufsWaterview 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks for watching and glad you've enjoyed some of my videos. I'm not sure if you're referring to my videos when talking about Iowa bc I only have a couple from there. I live in WI and do 99% of my driftless fishing here. But yes, Iowa and Minnesota have healthy streams within the driftless region. Actually, the region even extends into the very corner (Northwest) of Illinois. From what I've seen, it seems like the various states have different management practices when it comes to driftless streams - and I'm happy to live in WI. To your question regarding videoing. I have two GoPros (4-silver and 7-silver). I almost always prefer the head mount over the chest. Although it is less stable (Because it turns with the head) I find that it captures moments a lot better than the chest. With the chest mount you always have your arms etc swinging in front of the camera and you only see the direction your torso is facing. The last time I used the chest mount, I happened to catch my PB largemouth and once I got the fish hooked all I saw was arms then the nice inside of the aluminum boat I was fishing in - While if I was using the head mount I would have gotten it all. Bottom line is, try it one way one trip and the other on your next trip and see what you like better - I know I see a lot of people using chest mounts on KZfaq so there probably is an argument to be made for that.

Awesome video still a bit confusing how the dnr determines navigability by the floating a watercraft rule. Do they mean the entire stream or just one spot where you could technically put a kayak or canoe it?
@OlufsWaterview
@OlufsWaterview 2 жыл бұрын
Agree that it’s confusing. Good question. I don’t know the definite answer but I think it must be the water that you intend to use and not the whole stream because if that were the case you could extend the idea far beyond what I know to be ‘public water’ by that definition. Having said that, you can float a canoe or kayak on some really tiny water so I’d be curious as to what people would want with water that is smaller than that (recreationally). Another question I don’t know the answer to: when is navigability determined? During high water, average flows, low water? I mean it’s hard to create a law that encompasses every situation but these are good questions.
