The Driftless area is located in northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, southwest Wisconsin and northwest Illinois. This area was missed by the glaciers as they receded some 20,000 years ago and now provide miles upon miles of cold, clear trout water that offers a wide variety of waters to fish. The wildlife is simply outstanding and a big part of why I fish this area. The brown trout are naturally reproducing and have been for over a decade. Brook and rainbow trout are stocked in several streams and add variety to the fishing. What I think you will like the best is that array of water...some has to be very carefully fished while other water is much more wide open. If you haven't visited the area then please put this on your list of to-do's as it is one of the most spectacular spots to fish in the midwest. In this video I am able to land a number of nice trout...and in the two days landed about 50 trout in total...mostly on streamers and a few nymphs. For info and help, contact Brian Maliase at the Decorah trout rearing facility... Decorah is also a great little town with anything you would ever need. You can read more about the Driftless by visiting my web site at www.flyfishingwithjeff.com/bes....

Just came across this video while searching the Driftless area. Wonderful job and beautiful location. I agree, the Driftless area is a real gem especially for those of us living in the upper Midwest. Loved it,

Your channel is very cool. I think one of the reasons that attracted me to your channel is the fact that you actually show yourself doing some fly casting. The art of the fly cast is lost on some folks. All I ever see is just the "hook up". Thanks for that.

I got to fish the driftless in Wisconsin this past spring.Had one truly unforgettable day with a thick tan caddis hatch. Not used to prolific hatches like that here in our mountain freestone streams.I fish mostly in Ashe and Allegheny county in the northwestern mountains.I'll be 45 this year,Dad gave me my first fly rod when I was 9,so I've been actively pursuing the elusive trout for awhile now also.Still love it.Best wishes and may God richly bless you and yours.

Just returned from there, Jeff. My first-ever fly-fishing adventure. I caught seven rainbows; our group limited in two days despite the high water. Scenery is beautiful and Decorah is a a nice town. My friend owns land just outside of Waukon. We'll be back!

Beautiful video! I'm a very amateur fly fisherman (basically just self-taught with a lot of trial and error when I lived in Montana). After moving to Wisconsin, I've found the fishing be a lot more challenging as someone who doesn't really know what they're doing. :) I've tried fishing streams in the Wisconsin Driftless a few times, and mostly just found myself stumbling through brushy banks on small creeks where the fish scatter at the first tiny flash of shadow on the water. But your video is inspiring me to put some more time and work into it, and research some new locations that might be a little more forgiving for a beginner like me! Thanks for sharing.

I am actually in the MN Driftless region rn,already caught several nice browns over 12 inches each, then I went to south Fork creek and caught a couple micro Browns and my first wild native Brookie!!!,he was 12 inches at least, all the browns I caught were also wild,(not native though obviously),but still it was a great time and hope to go back soon sometime maybe this weekend!

I know this is a new comment to and old video, hope you get it. I'm retired and live in the deep south, but if I ever take a mind to move back north, it would be to the driftless. I have family in Baraboo, Elroy, Madison, Clinton, Beloit, Janesville and Lake Geneva as far as I remember....some of which is not far from the driftless. The only hard choice to make would be where to go.......Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois or Minnesota. The area is beautiful as I remember ( I grew up not far from Galena, Ill. ). It was one of the few areas around to catch good trout. I's funny the silly little things you miss ( I haven't seen a lightning bug in 30 years :), or picked up hickory nuts. Anyway, ya....the driftless is one of those places here in America that not many know of ( Including some of the residents lol ), it's like an emerald around the neck of the heartland.

Thank you for the reply. We left that country when I was 15 and moved to Ft. Collins ( just south of Cheyenne ) so I can share your love of that country, it 's beutiful, but like you said , it wasn't home. The few years of basic school I did there was kind of a culture shock for a kid. Most of my friends were back east imports like me :) After that I joined the Navy. After I went to all 50 States.......spent 19 years in Alaska ( we won't talk fishing because there is no comparison, I just scooped salmon out with a hand net...trout fishing was a sideline and most were...well...hold out your arm ). In the interim I met my wife ,she's a pharmacist so you know her degree. Anyway, I'm rambling. Funny you should mention Decorah...I have been researching that town on the internet for several weeks now. Although I have never lived there, Iowa just seems nice for some reason.

Hey...thanks for the nice comment...I'm so glad you liked it. Decorah and this part of Iowa is simply stunning and the amount of wildlife is worth each mile....in addition, the fishing is amazing and the people in the community treat everyone so nicely. I hope that you can make it to this area sometime... Jeff

I know I'm pretty late to the video, but I got to say it's beautiful, I live up here in the driftless as well and it is by far the best fishing in the world! Right now I have a 9 foot 5 weight rod and I like to fish a stream about the same size as the one in this video, I was looking at getting a 7 ft 6 in 3 weight rod, but didn't know if that would be too small or right for the presentation I use. I usually like to throw nymphs and occasionally a small streamer. So I was just wondering what you thought about that, also great video and tight lines.

Nice fishing. My son lives in Des Moines. May be worth a trip for us on our next visit. This stream looks like it was channeled for farming? Natives or stocked? Thanks for the video.

Richard, The answer to your question is both. The streams are marked and color coded as to which streams are stocked and which are natural. You can choose to keep a few or turn them all back....but on some of the brown trout streams in the far north eastern portions....it is catch and release only and you are in wild brown country...which makes it even more special. If you can get there this spring....go! This area is a true gem and should be on everyone's list... Jeff
