Wisconsin’s Iconic Merrimac Ferry: As Popular as Ever

With a history that dates to the 1840s, the Merrimac Ferry remains among the most popular destinations in the state of Wisconsin. Part state highway (WIS 113) and part tourist attraction, Wisconsin’s only free ferry transports around 300,000 vehicles and one million people each year across a half-mile stretch of the Wisconsin River between Sauk and Columbia counties. Who owns and operates the ferry? What should travelers keep in mind when coming aboard? These questions and more are answered in a new video produced by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in cooperation with the Columbia County Highway Department.

Interesting tidbit about not having propellers. While watching the live feed, I've often wondered why I couldn't see the water being churned, now I know why.

Thank you so much for the video! Until a few years back I was a lifelong Wisconsin resident and never had the opportunity to ride on the ferry. The first week of August, 2020 I finally had the privilege of going aboard twice on our way to and from Devils Lake. That would be an awesome job to pilot the Colsac ferry. #jealous

I did not know about the cable although i had watched the live cam several times (something hypnotizing about it!) To be honest, I don't actually understand how the cable function for this ferry works but it obviously does! Good video.

Anyone remember the cabins called the Snuggles Inn right by there? They were owned by a nice couple back in the late 70s..

I've lived in Merrimac for years I've slipped on the shore where it docks a few times I'm always down there

Last summer when I visited, the landings were very poorly maintained. There were spiderwebs everywhere, even on the ferry itself, and the shores reeked of algae.
